Came back for another look. Such a wonderful performance. Bob at the top of his game. Clapton looking on in wonder. Bob not phased by that...playing his heart out. And vocally perfect. I do so miss Bob standing centre stage with his guitar...iconic. Behind a keyboard off to the side can never be the same. In two hundred years people will be listening to these songs and wondering what it was like to live in Dylan's time....much as we do now looking back on Shakespeare. Bob will never die.....please.........

"Looking on in wonder" is right. It must be extraordinary for anyone who understands to play with him. Privilege, voluntary submission, recognition, eclipse, homage. Awe. And yes, he knows it and has lived with it since his early twenties.

Having seen several live performances of Bob Dylan I can confirm that it is really something special for the people who play with him on stage. They seem to be absolutely focused on him, his every move, every change of key, every change of phrases. Seems he has a magnetic aura. I even think he challenges them on their professionalism. If you are playing with Bob, you have to perform at your best.

When Bob and his Fender took over about 3 minutes in for a lovely, tender lead solo, for some reason my thoughts turned to the death of Our Friend and his, Tom Petty, and of the Traveling Willburys. I thought of the haunting simplicity of the Anglo-American folk and mountain music traditions ... and of Bob getting booed at the Newport Folk Festival when he dared strap a Fender on ... funny how things go.

Seems like my soul has turned into steel.. still got the scars that the sun didn't heal. Think what you want.. this is one of Dylan's greatest songs. I was born here and I'll die here.. against my will. Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer. Love how Dylan's "theme guitar" always changes. That's why we always think it sounds "different". Who ever had a career "after fifty" resembling Bob's? But could say that about "before fifty" too. And the envelope says...

… Shadows are fallin' and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is runnin' away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there
… Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there
… Well, I've been to London and I been to gay Paris
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down on the bottom of the world full of lies
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there
… I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Brilliant songwriting from the most brilliant writer. Every word and note carefully chosen. If he had sung "it's getting dark, but it's not dark yet,' it would be the same literal meaning, but the tone of near-despair would be completely different, and the darkness is reinforced by the melody, with the cadence descending at the end of each line, until his gravelly voice sounds like it's falling into a bottomless pit.

Shadows are fallin' and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is runnin' away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there
Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there
Well, I've been to London and I been to gay Paris
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down on the bottom of the world full of lies
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there
I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

The new day is opening here and a beautiful child flew through the air. He picked up a guitar and played all the tunes while the white rabbit danced in the light of the moon. The chess pieces seem fixed aligned by the wall but send all who are listening a new fiddler's tune from the highest mountains you will hear his song that will give you peace and the strength to go on.
