  • Climbing rose “Woolerton old hall”bred and introduced by @david_austin_roses in 2011, this rose was the subject of most discussion in a recent grid post the other day, many of you identifying as Jude the obscure, Claire Austin or even the lady of the lake,
Just proving that it’s really difficult to give you a good idea of colour and form in these posts, this climbing rose it’s absolutely stunning but very slow to establish itself taking three or four years really to get a moving, the blooms are large chalice shaped and very deeply cupped with many petals the colour changes from a deep peach to a heavy coffee cream as it ages,
The fragrance is heady and similar to that of a “Buttercup”When fully established it reaches around 12 feet.

I just got a second one this spring. My first Wollerton is 3 this year. It is so beautiful and romantic looking, but living in Colorado, it also has survived 20 below Fahrenheit to 100 Fahrenheit temperatures, 90 mile an hour winds, and lots of snow. We got 2 foot last Sunday and it did kill a couple leaves but they've mostly grown back. So this is a tough rose. The flowers also stay on in the heat much better than say the Lady of Shalot's flowers. Thank you for the review. I love this rose.🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍

Thanks for your review, it does appear to be a toughie, mine was planted last July, it has come on leaps and bounds, it needs training soon and a good feed, looking forward to see how it performs for me this year.

I planted my Wollerton Old Hall last spring and it bloomed right into December. It’s at 6 feet now, in partial shade and yes difficult colour to describe. Also bought Gabriel Oak on impulse so was very happy to see that you rated it so high

I have been waiting for your review of WOH. Thank you. I have one on a north wall, quite a difficult spot for a rose but it is performing wunderfull. Its fragrance is superb and the colour indeed a mocca, peach cream. Mine is 3 years and reaching 2,5 meters. Definitely one of my favourite DA roses.

Yes. I was looking at this rose from my living room window last evening before dusk, and the color enchanted me. It reminded me strongly of alabaster in the evening light. It’s gorgeous. It made me realize that I have a preference for roses that seem to “glow” and have that color variance... or color that can’t really be defined. I love your reviews!!

Good review, thank you. I am intoxicated by its unusual and strong scent. Thanks also for the info on its being slow to establish, mine is two years old and is still quite small, though obviously healthy. I had been fretting that I'd perhaps planted it in the wrong spot. We visited Wollerton Old Hall gardens last summer - most inspirational.

I love watching your videos of David Austin roses, I've watched every one, because I have only ever bought David Austin roses. I currently have several of his roses and have had very good luck with them. Wollerton Old Hall ( and Jude the Obscure) are next on my list of roses to get. Do you think WOH could thrive in a huge 20 gallon grow bag ( to be camouflaged of course) that is 20" high with a circ of 20"? I would very much love to plant this in an enclosed
side yard that is 4 1/2 fence panels long and 2 panels wide but the previous owner put in a layer of small pebbles apparently a mile deep. I can't even find the actual soil beneath it. All the plants in this yard have to be in pots :( I've loved this rose for so long and would love it to climb and cover the 6 ft wooden fence. The fence is 14 feet from the house wall that faces exactly due east ( to give you an idea of morning/afternoon sun exposure ).

I have a lot of DA and have found 2 WOH really slow to establish. I have been disappointed as my generous gardener romped away in the first year and every year since.

Woolton old Hall is slow to establish as I do say in my personal review, it takes 2 to 3 years to really find its feet and get itself away. Please bear in mind all roses are long-term investments. These aren’t bedding plants they take several seasons to establish and develop all of their natural attributes and qualities.

What would you recommend for climbing roses to cover a 12' tall, 10' long, 6.5' wide pergola? I am planning on 6 roses (one on each of the pillars)? There is an arched top that extends over the structure, making it over 12' long. I have Lady of Shallot and Pilgrim which I purchased as bareroots this year for obelisks, but I can use for the pergola

I’ve had this rose for about 5 years and noticed that it loses almost all of its leaves after the first flush each summer. The blooms have never gotten as large as the ones you’ve shown and petals always fall off within a day or two of being cut. Is this normal? Maybe our Louisiana heat stresses it?

  • @katandison9437

Great review...I have a WOH and it is in its second year. It is fabulous...about 8ft high and loaded with blooms. It is stunning to say the least. Now my huge disappointment is...no scent!! I chose this rose because of the reported heavy scent...but mine has zero. Do you have any idea as to why this might be? You say it is slow to mature so does this possibly mean that the scent may be delayed also?

    • @vorong2ru
      @vorong2ru ปีที่แล้ว +1

it could be the soil... just try to mulch it this spring with horse manure, it should give lots of organic material for it to work with which should promote the smell

All roses will produce hips of different qualities if left undead headed woolerton old hall or Jude the obscure won’t produce good quality hips. If you’re looking for a climber to produce good quality hips, take a look at buttercup and the generous Gardner, Bush roses, producing good hips would be lady, Emma Hamilton, Olivia, Rose, Austin, and sceptred Isle.

I have a rose exactly like that or maybe it is that, I don’t know but I hate it because it looks like a cabbage not like a rose. It shoots out very long stalks/stems and they end up bowing so much that they touch the grass so I think it might a climbing rose. It smells nice so that stops me from chopping it down and burn it.
