This channel is exactly what I have been looking for for almost thirty years of gardening. Roses are a long term investment and a relationship, like with a pet (they outlive most pets) and unless you have space to trial them, it is about gathering facts as well as feeling an emotional connection. These videos are really helping me choose another rose during the bare root season. Thank you 😊
My pleasure I’m glad you find the content useful what have I tempted you into ?
Please do consider using this link to make your selections

Love these comparison videos. Sometimes several Austin roses can look almost identical so it's nice to be able to see them in the one video to see the differences.
LOVE David Austin roses!! They are divine.
They’re a stunning collection Ben 🍃🌹🍃
I appreciate you grouping the apricots, oranges, yellows and golds together. In my mind having different rose shrubs of varying heights and widths and with these colors together would be stunning.
These side by side comparisons are so incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time.
thank you for making these videos! you have the best ideas to make helpful comparisons for those of us with smaller spaces and indecisiveness 🤣
Your collection is inspirational! Love them all! It's so difficult to choose.
Thank you Ben, I love your enthusiasm. I have two Ladies of Shallot growing on either side of our entrance pathway. I'm surprised that you said no scent because here (Australia), she has a beautiful light clean fragrance. I'm not a connoisseur of fragrances but she has an 'haa' scent. Lifts the heart. 😊
Oooooo this is fun! Thank you 🙏 As others have said, it is great to see everything side-by-side and helps get a proper perspective of bloom size, shape and colour.
Glad you find it helpful
These videos are so helpful. Would you consider making a video on roses with most thorns and least thorns? Thanks so much. 🌹
It won’t be this season im afraid
I love the roses and your videos, they are very helpful. But it made me laugh so much scrolling along the timeline at the bottom to come across "Rolled Dangle", a new DA rose?!! Whoever writes the captions must never have heard of Roald Dahl! More seriously, my latest DA roses, planted bare root today are Sceptered Isle and The Country Parson. They join several other of your favourites; I have a special affection for Kew Gardens, Scarborough Fair and Silas Marner, but I love them all. Thank you Ben
Ahhh the “ The poets wife”👍👍👍😀
Everything is so beautiful
thaaaank you Ben
Hi Ben, I love the way your shirt matches today❤
lol thank you
First time seeing you on TH-cam - now your newest subscriber. I'm only growing one rose in my garden but you will have me starting a collection :)
Welcome along 💚
😊😊Розы Эдит и Джульет чем отличаются
Vanessa Bell and Lichfield Angel.....
Thanks Ben for another great review. I have Grace growing in my garden in Nottingham and it has been up to 5 feet tall this year and in bloom constantly from mid June. Also, for me, it does have a medium tea fragrance. I guess different growing conditions and different noses will lead to contrasting reviews but one thing we agree on is that it is a very beautiful rose 😊
May I just check that you don’t have golden celebration instead ?
What a treat 🤍💛🧡🤗Watching these beautiful comparison videos is a balm for the soul. 😊 It's so interesting to see the subtle and not so subtle differences in one colour group. I really appreciate it and start fancying the idea of a yellow cream grouped area in the garden now ☺️ (a yellow/cream corner, a pink corner...) just that I do not have the garden/space for it ☺️ (yet 😉) but for indulging in the beauty, these videos are the next best thing! Thank you, @the_gardenerben! 🤗
Molyneux is the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers.....down the road from DA HQ etc
You are so very much appreciated for making this detailed show and tell Ben! I love this color range and also the coral/apricots too! Thanks Ben!
It’s my pleasure it’s great see them
All side by side
Thank you Ben. I am devouring all of your videos! Molineaux is on of my favorites this year. She is in a shady spot, but the blooms almost glow. I stop and admire her every time I pass!
Welcome along I’m glad you enjoy the content. There is something about the colour of this rose that is very captivating.
Stunning flowers. I already grow Wollerton Old Hall and have ordered some others in these colors. I am sad Jude the Obscure is no longer available, but hope to buy Danahough (sp) next year.
It’s a great rose im sorry it wasn’t in flower when this was filmed
@@the_gardenerben Roses are not obedient. Divas never are.
I wonder why your Lady of Shalott has no scent? Mine has a medium tea fragrance!
Please remember we all sell fragrance differently. I know plenty of people that rate the Lady of shallot with a high fragrance, but I don’t pick up on much of it at all
Another treat, thank you so much! Would you also have included Claire Austin and Charles Darwin if they had been in bloom? Also, not sure if you grow Jude the Obscure but do you think it's worth having on top of Wollerton old hall and Dannahue?
I would have included CD yes and CA and I’m a yes man yes to them all lol
@@the_gardenerben 😁 Do you have Jude?
@@jenniferturquoise6901 I do
Loved this review. These roses are my favourite colours of all the rose colours available. I started my collection with Lady of Shallot, then Bathsheba, then Roald Dahl, Bring Me Sunshine, Grace and my newest one is Dannahue. It’s hard to pick a favourite I just love them all. I would really like a Wollerton Old Hall but don’t think I can fit it in. I noticed you didn’t review Bathsheba. What do you think of her? 🧡💛
Hi Robert, what do you think of Dannahue compared with Roald Dalh? I am looking for a rose similar to Roald Dalh but with fragrance...
@@ewenthomas1743 I think that they’re two quite different roses but also have lots of things in common. Both of mine are very fragrant, both or prolific bloomers and repeat bloomers, both seem relatively black spot resistant but they’re different colours. Their fragrances are very different. I find that Roald Dahl’s is heavier but lovely and what I think of as a traditional rose fragrance. Dannahue’s fragrance is still fairly strong, but citrusy and really rather nice. Dannahue doesn’t smell like any other rose I have.
@@robertarthur6470 Thank you very for your response. I thought that Roald Dalh was not very fragrant but if it is, it has everything I want so I will go for it. How would you describe the color of Dannahue?
My Roald Dahl was planted as a bare root a year ago so is still a young plant. I’m really looking forward to seeing it next Summer. It had around five flushes of blooms this year. In the first flush the blooms seemed much more fragrant than the subsequent ones. I could smell the fragrance from quite a distance. Dannahue has beautiful colour blooms. I would describe them as a soft but not insipid yellow colour. The buds have red flashes on them. It’s a really beautiful rose.
Hi Ben, I can't get over the discontinuation of A Shropshire Lad. Any suggestions which could be a good alternative?
Thank you Ben for this very nice comparative. I love Roald Dalh but it is not really fragrant. Is there any other David Austin that look and perform similar but with a stronger fragrance? Maybe Dannahue? Also, as Crown Princess Margareta have been discontinued, what would be her best alternative in your opinion? Maybe Bring me sunshine?
I think you’ve answered both of your own question is there yes, a substitute for a Roald Dahl with a much more fragrance would certainly be dannahue, and a very good alternative to Crown. Princess Margarita would certainly be a Bring me Sunshine, although mine is in full sun and I know Crown Princess Margarita does quite well in partial shade.
Great stuff as always, thank you, Ben. Just one thing - all my DA roses grow much taller then mentioned. For example Crocus Rose, this year reaching nearly 2 metres! Is that normal? I'm in the Czech Republic. Also, my Lady of Shallot definitely does have a nice fragrance - tea with a hint of grapefruit, I would say. Happy gardening! 😉🌹
Fragrance wise we all smell differently, so that’s not surprising some roses do get larger in some seasons is it flowering well ?
@@the_gardenerben Yes, huge shrub with loads of blooms, a reliable performer. So are Munstead Wood and Lady Emma Hamilton, actually.
Do you find Country Parson covered in Blackspot Ben? Ive had problems with mine from day 1. Really disappointing.
Lady Emma suffered badly this year also with disease.
No not especially although this year has been brutal by the sounds of things your plants are stressed, focused watering and mulching will help
Too bad there isn't a rose that produces all those blooms LOL They go all so well together.
The closest you’re going to get to, that is an old rose, called a Phyllis bride
А другие розы вы выращиваете спасибо
I grow lots of roses
graham thomas discontinued ?😢one of my favourites!
I’m afraid so now retired
Very blurry 🙁, can't really see the roses which is never the case with your videos 🤷. Otherwise, thank you for all you do!!
Hi Ben don’t you do the Pilgrim anymore??
I have the pilgrim yes -it was reviewed in June
I have Molenux in my garden and always call it New molly as I dislike it's name . Great rose, rubbish name
I must confess personally, it is a little bit of an oddball for david Austin but I suppose if you’re into football, you’re into football
