If you remember back to the episodes about the first Avatar, the airbenders actually used to be able to fly but seemingly lost the skill over the 10, 000 years from the original harmonic convergence
Nah that isn’t the same kind of weightlessness flight as the air bison and zahir can do. I've seen people theorize that the first airbenders could fly because they had no earthly attachments, but because they bonded with the flying bison they lost that ability, as their love for the bison was an earthly tether. Although if that is the case it would contradict ATLA
@@yomamma.ismydaddy216 I think there is still an argument that it is the same because the creators of the show have said if the show was set in the real world you wouldn't actually see airbending, it's animated for the audiences sake only, similar to the sytilsed version of the prequel. When Wan sees the airbenders he perceives them as flying aswell as when Sky Bisons fly, that's still airbending because the Sky Bison are the original airbenders, like how the Badger Moles are the original earthbenders. There is a theory that Bolin was able to lavabend, because lavabending is something between firebending and earthbending. And Bolin has a mother from the firenation and a father from the earthkingdom, so it was like in his genes. I think this is a plausible explanation because before Legend of Korra we've only seen lavabending from the Avatar. That was because the nations were more seperated in the past. But after the 100 year war things were different. Citizens from the firenation had children with people from the earthkingdom. I guess Ghazan's parents were also from earthkingdom and firenation.
I kind of lean this way too. I responded to another comment that my thinking might be a stretch, but it is notable all three known non-Avatar lavabenders either have explicitly confirmed (Bolin) or vaguely implied (Ghazan and Sun, a character from the comics) Fire Nation ancestry. I am basing this on their eye color in the case of the latter two (light golden brown for Ghazan and totally amber for Sun) so it is quite a flimsy theory.
i think it could be a part of it but i also like it not being all of it. in my headcanon, an earth bender can be a metalbender or a lavabender but not both as they require completely different mindsets. with metalbending being the most extreme earthbending, requiring absolute control, stubborness, tenacity in order to seek out the bits of earth in the metal. for lavabending, a more fluid, reactive response makes sense, someone who can go with the flow and adapt. i think this works for bolin well even if you discount the ancestry specifically because he grew up in an unstable situation and likely learned a lot of his fighting skills from observing mako, who is acrobatic and fluid like most firebenders (it’s fun to look through various bolin bending scenes and see him using this more acrobatic style and think of it as a sign of learning from big bro 🥺). both the idea of heritage and the idea of mindset does make me think lavabending will grow in prevalence in the years after lok, like metalbending did after atla. as people often say, people used to think the under five minute mile was impossible, but when it was done, it was like runners just needed to be able to see it and believe it and now it’s not wholly uncommon. with bolin, a prominent figure (politically, movie star, athlete) learning it and spreading the possibility, and with the continued intermixing of the different nations as technology grows, it is likely that the amount of lavabenders will increase as well. however i do think it will still be rarer than metalbending since the mentality of metalbending is more similar to the traditional earthbending mindset. sorry for the random earth subbending rant, idk i just have a lot of thoughts on the mythology and magic system of the avatarverse 😅
Building off of this I generally think that Bolin's boxing style of fighting from pro bending sets him up well for lava bending. Fluidity, light on your feet, the exact opposite of the sturdy earth and metal bending we've seen so far. His genetics definitely feel like they help too though!
Since it's only been like an hour and people are already saying it I'm just gonna put this disclaimer here re: lavabending. It has not ever been confirmed to be because Bolin is the descendent of both earth and fire. Geneology with bending has never really been explored and in fact we have very little to go on that it's about genes in the first place. It's been confirmed that all people from the original Air Nation were benders, and this was stated to be because of how spiritual they are. We have several character's who parents are not even benders at all, that can bend, as well as people that are siblings where one cannot bend. Bending pops up whenever and wherever it wants, the only example of trying to use geneology was Ozai marry Ursa because of her relation to Avatar Roku (Ursa herself is not even a firebender.) There seems to be an implication that you can or can't bend, as well as some having to train to get the skill anyway. The most likely scenario given what little we do know, and what we know about Bolin is that his personality was already appropriate for this bending subskill. Lavabending, at least the earthbending kind, seems to be a phase shift like water -> ice. It is extremely UNLIKE firebending in almost every aspect, in fact, and is way more similar to waterbending especially in it's movements. Just because it is hot does not mean that it is the fire of earth. Lava is not fire. Bolin is a very floaty earthbender because of his pro-bending style, and his personality is very different than that of any other major earthbender's we've seen. These two things paired with meeting a life or death scenario where Lavabending was his only option likely unlocked the skill for him. As far as the Avatar's lavabending is concerned, ir could make sense that a past avatar was able to Lavabend, so any avatar could in the Avatar state at least, and one instance was a firebender lavabending. But it is also important to note that the avatars have only been shown to bend existing lava, not creating it. So even if in this scenario it WAS fire+earth, it would still be different than what Bolin and Gazan do. Now all this makes the most sense to me, primarily because the geneology theories go against how we've been taught bending worked in the past. But obviously the entire thing COULD be bullshit and the genes could be right, and there could be retcons. (Though I would hate that personally.) So until it is confirmed or deconfirmed take this, and other thoughts with a grain of salt. I just thought I'd share my extremely thought out opinion because I think Lavabenders are cool (hot) and I think about this a lot.
Had to respond because I love lavabending likewise, especially the way it is animated and the sound design used for it. Overall good points, but I think it leans towards the other, genetics and inheritance, side. It is a stretch but I don't think it is a coincidence that all three known non-Avatar lavabenders either have explicitly confirmed (Bolin) or vaguely implied (Ghazan and Sun, a character from the comics) Fire Nation ancestry. Granted, I am basing this on their eye color in the case of the latter two (light golden brown for Ghazan and totally amber for Sun) so it is quite a flimsy theory.
@@tar-mairo Oh for sure that's totally valid, and at the very least I could agree that that is probably the strongest evidence for genetics at least in the case of Sun and Bolin since we genuinely know nothing about Ghazan. There are other eye anomalies cause Jinora also has brown eyes instead of Grey. And Ming-Hua breaks the mold for water as well wth her black (or dark grey if you wanna be picky) eyes, so idk abou Ghazan for that theory, but it still holds up for Sun who I think was given amber eyes very much on purpose because of the nature of the comics and the point of Yu Dao lore wise.
This was an intense episode, so many emotions! Korra growing and willing to sacrifice herself. Lin telling her sister she loves her before charging in. P'li with her death scene affecting Zaheer so much he went full zen. Bolin rushing the lava without any idea he could do anything so we could of just watched him die a horrific death to try to save everyone. Everything is so intense, and to add that cliffhanger! Next episode is going to be insane!
It's weird watching you reacting to this separately from the next one because when they aired they came out together, it was a double episode finale and it was HUGE! And yes, Grey Delisle voices Ming-Hua, it took you some episodes to realize it although I think she did try to sound a bit different than Azula to create this new character. She was also in season 2, the talking mushroom and the spirit spider which we all got excited for her return in the Avatar world even for those small parts!
In Aang's finale, he created an unstoppable elemental vehicle to fly after Ozai. But Zaheer has actually become like a sky bison. He can un-tether from the earth and fly like the wind.
All airbenders could fly (as shown during Wan's time), until they became attached to the sky bison and formed lifelong companionships with them which tethered them to the earth.
@@jenso413 they already know who kuvira is and that she has beef with korra. on patreon they have just released ep.7 of season 4. so nothing too spoilery.

an amazing episode and was released as a double episode finale hence the cliff hanger. Kuvira is also voiced by Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late great Robin Williams.
Guys you surprised about Zaheer's flying but remember first episode of that season.. Zaheer's escape from the prison.. What was he say? Guru Laghima have said " If you have no bonding to this world, your soul will free.." Also he spend last his 40 life without touching the ground.. Remember that part? Zaheer managed that " empty and become wind" technique when he lost his last bondage (his girlfriend) he managed it because of this..
Amon was a socialist, Unaloq was a religious tyrant, Zahir is an anarchist. Of all the villains, Zahir is the most pure in the belief of the cause… He’s not just exploiting the cause for his own gains/glory like the others.
Bolin’s ability to lava bend doesnt come out of nowhere his brother is a firebender so its in his blood. If this was intentional in the beginning that is just excellent character design.
Yeah it's heavily implied that lavabending is one of the few or only bending type that's genetic since the bender's parents would hail the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom
When it comes to reactions, there is nothing like watching someone who is really enjoying the show, I've seen so many reactions, and there are so many that are average, mehh, like they are just watching the show for the views in their channel, it's actually so good to watch reactions like these where you can tell you are really enjoying it and also you empathize with the characters, specially with Korra, who usually get criticism during each episode, keep it up guys, its been such a nice journey with you 👏👏👏
"The side that resorts to murder and kidnapping and sacrifice for their agenda is probably on the wrong" This sums up why Hamas is the wrong side of the conflict
Bolin being a lava bender is so EPIC!!!! and it only makes sense because he is also from the Fire Nation on his mother's side. and lava is kind of fire in earth form EPIC🔥🔥🔥
Ming Hua is in fact voiced by Azula's Voice actress Grey DeLisle/ Grey Griffin (same person known by those names, Grey DeLisle being more common in credits).
Zaheer reminds me a lot of The Operative in _Serenity._ A man of absolute and unwavering conviction - as Shepherd Book put it, “a believer.” He truly believes what he’s doing is right and necessary to create a good world, even if the things he has to do make him unfit to be a part of that world. That’s how you create a villain who is at once both relatable and terrifying.
I didn't remember that Grey DeLisle, who played Azula, also plays Ming Hua.... can really hear it this episode when she asked about Zaheer's flight. That's how good she is... IDK if that was a slip up or intentional, but Ming Hua doesn't normally sound like Azula.
Hey, Spartan and Pudgey! that was such a great reaction! I loved how it kept you engaged and gasping all the time but also very perceptive of everything happening in the scenes (my favorite has to be Pudgey's matter-of-fact ''Metalbend what though?'', haha.) Visually, this episode is really the most beautiful and most haunting in Book 3 for me! (Well, until the finale!) The choreography of Korra (in chains!) and Tonraq fighting Zaheer alone was badass but I remember being utterly shocked how amazing (and terrifying!) the lavabending visuals were, both regarding the animation and the impact, especially in the background of the scene where Zaheer flies upwards and away with Korra. P'li death was also quite brutal but like you two pointed out, it is commonly assumed this unlocked Zaheer's ability to fly, as she was his last earthly tether. (Notice how Korra and Zaheer react very, very differently when they believe someone dear to them has died!) The Battle at Laghima's Peak was indeed awesome but it is nothing compared to what happens in the next episode! Get ready for the wrath of Korra!
Spartan let’s be real, you barely called that Bolin would Lava bend. You didn’t know for a fact. It was sort of thrown into the atmosphere very loosely but he did come in clutch.😂😂😂
Yes Zaheer is so horrified when P'li died, combustion bending using heavy breathing technique, and the airbender able to feel the air changing around them, that's the reason why when the combustion man try to attacking Aang closely, Aang can find where is he so fast, same case with Zaheer and P'li, Zaheer can feel her whe she combustionbending and poof! Suddenly she stop breathing
The reason why Zaheer can fly while other airbenders can’t is because he didn’t have any worldly attachments left. Anng and Tenzin can’t because they have the sky bisons as best friends as well as gliders/staffs as well as a family
You mentioned Zuko's daughter. We saw her briefly in season 2 I believe were the council was discussing what actions to take on the Water Tribe Civil War.
I've said this before, but i did and do adore LoK as a show as whole. The Last Airbender was great in it's own right, but LoK is just on a whole different level. The show is just so incredibly well done with it's emotion and action packed and otherwise intense moments and characters themselves. There would be so many times i would to some extent tear up either out of joy, pride or plain old sadness, moments that would get my heart racing. Aang was awesome, he had a good story and development, but Korra just really drew me in, really felt the character as well as the other ones, her journey, growth, the suffering she went through all the seasons. Many will disagree, but i found LoK to be phenomenal in every way...except a little bit in terms of narrative in the 4th season, where Kuvira's motivations/drive felt...odd and out of place, but surprisingly the ending was satisfying...to not spoil anything.
Each villain we have seen so far hasn't been super bad really, they've just gone about it in the wrong way and have taken everything to the extreme. Ozai in AtLA while he might have believed that the Fire nation was the best and wanted to "share" that with the world, really just wanted to rule the whole world and be the most powerful person in it. He didn't care who he had to destroy to do it. He was evil to be evil. Amon wanted equality between benders and non-benders. Not a bad thing cause we have seen those that are able to bend, use that power to control and take advantage of people without bending. However, his way of fixing it was to create a cult pretty much and gain as much power as possible to stop it. I mean yes he was trying to become more powerful than the avatar at the end but still. Unalaq felt the world had gotten too far from the path of the spirit world and wanted to bring balance by allowing the spirits to visit the human world and be one again. He wanted to get rid of the avatar cause they are the one person that would be able to stop that from happening. However, in his idea of bring the spirits back, he trusted the wrong spirit and believed that he would be able to become the new avatar to keep the spirit world open. Zaheer feels that bodies of government shouldn't be allowed to control the people. We've seen that to be a bad thing with stuff like the Earth Queen. (And of course real life examples.) However, his idea of fixing this is to destroy all bodies of government and rules, and let utter chaos rule the world. We learned he wanted to kidnap Korra when she was younger and would have for sure raised her to believe that rules and structure were a bad thing and have used her power to tear it all down.
Crazy how its been so many insane fights with crazy animation and they have yet to see the fight we all waiting for lol no spoiling! But yeah yall about to see a damn superman vs the hulk kinda fight 😂
havent watch yet, but this is Korra's best episode... This is where Spartan puts this antagonist above everyone else!... At least thats my bet! :) Lets watch! ...this is still a show in a kids channel so the death of combustion girl can be watched
I have said this in other places but for all of the professed feminism of Bryke, they totally fridge P’Li. They give just a little personality and then they kill her. What a tragic she has.

@@nicholassmith7984 No I'm talking about the fact that if a firebender and an earthbender produce an earthbending child it makes them a lavabender. That's not true.
And Ming-Hua breaks the mold for water as well wth her black (or dark grey if you wanna be picky) eyes, so idk abou Ghazan for that theory, but it still holds up for Sun who I think was given amber eyes very much on purpose because of the nature of the comics and the point of Yu Dao lore wise.
your comment is chefs kiss. i always always am just sitting and stewing when people make blanket statements about bending abilities and genetics 😅
It was only the fact that P'li was dead that enabled Zaheer to "let go" and master the Zen state that allowed him to fly.
@@noneofyourbeeswax01 Exactly
"they're building her up a little bit" oh boy 💀
Another insane episode. I knew Spartan would be so hyped throughout it, haha.
All airbenders could fly (as shown during Wan's time), until they became attached to the sky bison and formed lifelong companionships with them which tethered them to the earth.
In retrospect, Kuvira saving Tonraq is quite…interesting. I‘m sure Korra will thank her for that and then they will become BFFs. 😂
surely
Kuvira such a good friend. Soo kind
Oh, basically, she will.
In comics at least.
I too love putting subtle spoilers in a first time reaction series
@@jenso413 they already know who kuvira is and that she has beef with korra. on patreon they have just released ep.7 of season 4. so nothing too spoilery.
You can really hear Azula at 16:25
Was about to comment that
At this point I'm convinced there's something wrong with LOK haters cuz season 3 LOK is on par with season 2,3 of ATLA 🤷Open your eyes and watch this ep for example
I personally rate Season 3 LOK above season 2 ATLA
Because season 2 was ruined by the love triangle and Korra's annoying attitude. Season 3 is peak Avatar but that doesn't make up for the bad parts.
@Ultimaniacx4 like the last Airbender didn't have filler episodes that weren't annoying what are yall on
@@JerseyBoy489 What are you on? You call the love triangle stuff and Korra's ENTIRE character filler?
@Ultimaniacx4 I'm saying season 2 korra is still good avatar season
an amazing episode and was released as a double episode finale hence the cliff hanger.
Well Ming Hua sounds like Azula because she is
One of my favourite moments of this ep, is Bolin discovering he could lava bend.
I‘m sure they are building up that character for something! 😂
This is probably my favorite episode of Korra.
When it comes to reactions, there is nothing like watching someone who is really enjoying the show, I've seen so many reactions, and there are so many that are average, mehh, like they are just watching the show for the views in their channel, it's actually so good to watch reactions like these where you can tell you are really enjoying it and also you empathize with the characters, specially with Korra, who usually get criticism during each episode, keep it up guys, its been such a nice journey with you 👏👏👏
Zaheer learnt to fly because of plis death. Once she was gone. Nothing bound him to earth anymore. He achieved ultimate freedom
"The side that resorts to murder and kidnapping and sacrifice for their agenda is probably on the wrong" This sums up why Hamas is the wrong side of the conflict
Not a valid excuse for genocide.
"he's not very fond of world leaders" - THAT'S why Zuko went to protect his daughter. 😃
This season is just so good at keeping intensity and curiosity going!
I love how no one can never initially grasp the fact that Pli’s head gets exploded lmaoooo
Zaheer was really foreshadowing the flying. He mentioned Lahima, who developped the technique ike a lot.
the anticipation as 3x13 gets closer and closer.. i m so excited to see you guys get to it, all time favorite episode
Bolin being a lava bender is so EPIC!!!! and it only makes sense because he is also from the Fire Nation on his mother's side. and lava is kind of fire in earth form EPIC🔥🔥🔥
I *LOVE* the Father-Daughter team-up of Korra and Tonraq!!!
The VA for Ming Hua is the VA who voiced Azula 😊
The one I didn’t recognize was young Lin Beifong. Some person!
Pli is actually 6foot8 so she is VERY tall
Yes. That would be about 203 cm, so absolutely stratospheric!
Dude you didn't realize Pi Li exploded her own head? Everyone else was in total shock and knew that was it for her.
1st appearance of "The Great Uniter." ALL HAIL!
the waterbender villain voice actor ( ming-hua ) is the same voice actor for Azula in last airbender
This episode was mind blowing!
I've always wondered if Bolin being half fire nation had anything to do with him being able to lava bend
I loved how it kept you engaged and gasping all the time but also very perceptive of everything happening in the scenes (my favorite has to be Pudgey's matter-of-fact ''Metalbend what though?'', haha.)
Visually, this episode is really the most beautiful and most haunting in Book 3 for me! (Notice how Korra and Zaheer react very, very differently when they believe someone dear to them has died!)
The Battle at Laghima's Peak was indeed awesome but it is nothing compared to what happens in the next episode! Get ready for the wrath of Korra!
Look!
Up in the sky!
It's a bird.
It's a plane.... it's SUPER ZAHEER! Able to topel Ba Sing Se in a single night, it's SUPER ZAHEER!
Spartan let’s be real, you barely called that Bolin would Lava bend. You didn’t know for a fact. It was sort of thrown into the atmosphere very loosely but he did come in clutch.😂😂😂
What if he’s not a lava bender? He was going to sacrifice himself 🥺 cool bolin
Yess I adore these updated uploads , so looking forward to your reactions ❤❤
The reason why Zaheer can fly while other airbenders can’t is because he didn’t have any worldly attachments left. Anng and Tenzin can’t because they have the sky bisons as best friends as well as gliders/staffs as well as a family
Zaheer be like: "oh she's dead? I can fly now 😎"
(air) Flows before hoes?
15:01 I was crying when I saw the first time, just could not believe what I saw.A legacy turned into ashes, gone
The fans speculates that for lava bending you need a fire nation parent and an earth nation one. Dont know if both need to benders.
This is why Zaheer is the GOAT! 🐐
4:03 The powers of the High Ground are certainly NOT to be underestimated.
Ming Hua (waterarm lady) is same voice actress as Azula yes.
Zaheer is a good boyfriend and has feelings like everyone. I wouldn't say that means he's got a good heart by any means.
The voice actress for Ming-Hua is in fact the same voice actress for Azula.
Grey Delisle (Azula) does indeed voice Ming Hua! Good catch
You mentioned Zuko's daughter. We saw her briefly in season 2 I believe were the council was discussing what actions to take on the Water Tribe Civil War.
we don’t see her until book 4 actually, i think that’s the scene you’re thinking of
@@another_julia Yeah you are probably right.
13:52 Laghima could. Just like the sky bison.
Ngl, I had the same reaction that Spartan had to Zaheer &P'li to you guys when I saw a photo of you standing next to each other lol
Yes Ming hua voice is the same as Azula
The peak of all peaks in both avatar Korra & Aang 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Foaming at the mouth, ready, absolutely ready to watch episode 13. Allll the hype and lore from ATLA and LOK coming to such a beautiful meeting point
Yes, Zaheer let his earthly tether go, his love, something that Aang couldn't, remember The Guru Episode
Spartan is bang on. Zaheer hates authorities. Who's the biggest authority if not the Avatar?
Air bisons can fly, so it makes sense air benders are able to fly as well.
Yesssss!!! I cannot wait for your reactions to the last episodes!!!
Zaheer unlocked a very ancient airbending secret
Yes the water bender Ming Hua is voiced by the va for azula
Yeah Grey DeLisle Griffin is the va of both Azula and Ming Hua.
Crazy how its been so many insane fights with crazy animation and they have yet to see the fight we all waiting for lol no spoiling! But yeah yall about to see a damn superman vs the hulk kinda fight 😂
Spartan: If Tenzin dies guys….
Pudgey: 😳
Me: 😳..😂 why would he say that lmao
Zaheer didn't need to let go of his love for Pli because she is no longer an earthly desire seeing as she's dead
I wish they had done a bit more with Kuvira in season 3.
havent watch yet, but this is Korra's best episode... This is where Spartan puts this antagonist above everyone else!... At least thats my bet! :) Lets watch!
...this is still a show in a kids channel so the death of combustion girl can be watched
Ming Hua VA is the same person who did Azula
It's so brutal that her head freaking exploded 😭 insane for a "kids" show
I have said this in other places but for all of the professed feminism of Bryke, they totally fridge P’Li. They give just a little personality and then they kill her.
What a tragic she has.
Murder and kidnapping shows what a "good heart" Zaheer has.
18:00 Spartan, buddy, pal... Really?
Zaheer said "she gave her life for the cause" and you still didn't know? SHAME! 😂
This season is just perfection after perfection....
The red Lotus is like a dark team Avatar.
Bolin's Father was fire bender and mother was earthbender.. Because of this Mako was fire and Bolin was earthbender.. Also he must take both of them's genes .. Lavabender things make sense..
That's a headcanon made by fans and is not true.
It's never been confirmed that they were benders, but they were from each nation.
@@nicholassmith7984 I mean that.. Not benders.. I try to say they are from these nations..you didnt need to bend that element.. If you have that genes, it works too..
@@ayoubazahaf1511 It's not headcannons.. It's about genes.. If any brother is fire bender and the other is earthbender, that must be like this.. Also, their parents picture shows us this.. Even their costumes were fire and earth nation's costumes..
@@nicholassmith7984 No I'm talking about the fact that if a firebender and an earthbender produce an earthbending child it makes them a lavabender. That's not true. Unlocking sub bending skills is based of changing your personality, just like Toph did with metal and Korra growing spiritual to unlock her spirit bending.
There was a airbender that flew in the past that is where he learned from he read him the airbender that flew when he stole the thing about the airbender that could fly in tenzins temple
Ghazan is a legend. Totally destroyed the wall of Ba Sing Se AND the Northern Air Temple.
Always loved these episodes and also Zaheer as a character.... He's one of the best if not the best villains of entire series and most people consider him the best character of the series including ATLA.... It's mixed on how to feel about him because he's not completely wrong..... Do you honestly feel bad for him killing the queen was a bad thing???
