      To be fair, they kind of smacked the viewer in the face with, “this is a villain,” by way of the music change, the expression, and angle in the animation ie. the camera looking up at her and zooming in. Unfortunately, there was also no reason to do so when you take into consider the timeline of Kuvira’s character arc. Honestly, it was a baffling decision all around. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    If you notice, Bolin’s first time bending lava is also a callback to the original series.
    When he “stands his ground” against the lava, its similar to the stance that Toph instructed Aang to use when he was supposed to stop the boulder. Also, it’s the bravest and most earthbender-like thing Bolin does up to this point.

    Having unassisted flight may seem cool in the Avatar universe, but the fact that you have to let go of all earthly tethers and more importantly the people you really care about it, makes having the ability feel all the more tragic. Interesting thing about Kuvira, you wouldn't notice unless it was a rewatch but the first time we go to Zaufu and meet Suyin she's performing a dance with a big metal flower. Kuvira is among the dancers. Later Kuvira is the guard that Suyin yells at when she delvers bad news. She is also seen on the front page of a Zaufu paper at one point as well. The mole on her cheek and her angular features makes her really stand out, but her mostly appearing in uniform makes her blend into the background. They were trying to set her up for quite a while, but one would think due to budget concerns her backstory was probably cut out.

    Zaheer being able to let go his earthly attachments and achieve the ability to fly always brings me back to the Sozin’s comet episode where Aang sought advice from Avatar Yangchen. Yangchen then revealed it was impossible for the avatar as it’s their duty is to the world and so forth. Someone mentioned earlier in the season, Bolin talks about how “gravel is more his thing” and that made me think.
    I never thought about it, but putting it in perspective, it does make a lot more sense. It’s much more easy to heat up gravel than most rocks, due to the composition being different, and more often than not are eroded from igneous stone, or “lava rocks” rather than sedimentary, which are more often used to extract materials used for more practical purposes like limestone or sandstone. Sedimentary rocks are what seem to usually be bent in the show (based solely off of color and the fact of dust always being misplaced, so don’t quote me on that one) so it makes sense Lavabending is such a rare technique compared to metal bending.
    While it’s true that most minerals can become lava under enough pressure, the amount of pressure and friction needed to heat rock to that level is so incredible that bending metal, or rather the impurities in the metal, is a COMPLETELY different technique. This is actually shown through the type of movement in the show. Ghazon is MOSTLY a different story because of how practiced he is, but watching Bolin Lavabend, you can see that even simply cooling down the lava takes a much stronger stance and larger movements.
    Even Ghazon, who is well practiced, can’t create lava without taking a much more aggressive stance. However, metal seems to be able to be bent with a single hand alone if practiced enough, which, again, makes sense since they aren’t doing anything but refining their earthbending ability. The key difference here is in the style of bending itself. Rather than learning to change the composition through stiffer movements, metalbenders have to learn to do more flowy, smooth movements.
    In conclusion, the reason Bolin can’t metalbend is because the very foundation of bending, the movements/footwork are COMPLETELY different.

    There’s a popular theory that Guru Patik also wanted to teach Aang how to fly, but he was unable to do so because he loved Katara too much. This is strengthened a bit by the fact that when Aang went into the avatar state while in a fight with katara against Zuko and Azula, he started floating in mid air before Azula shot him down

  • @OverTheMoon891
    @OverTheMoon891 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, my theory is that lavabending is what happens when you have a firebending parent and an earthbending parent. Its only possible as a mix between the two bending genomes when earthbending is acting dominant with firebending present as a recessive. Thats why Mako isn't also a lavabender based on his genome being the opposite (fire dominant with earth being recessive) and it doesn't activate that way.

    I feel as though the concept of detaching yourself or letting go of earthly attachments is often misinterpreted. Much like Aang during the episode The Guru, people assume it means severing your emotional ties to the people and things you care about. However, I don't think this is the only way, or perhaps even the intended way. I've always looked at this concept as being able to separate yourself from these attachments. As if the world was a painting and your attachments were a single point of that painting. Detaching yourself is giving you the ability to step back from that single point and see the whole painting. That point is still there, and you can still go back to it, but you are no longer locked only in that one position.

    This was the best episode. P'Li dying (not exactly good, but an intense moment) and Zaheer achieving true flight. But the best? BOLIN THE MOTHERF'IN LAVABENDER!! That was the best moment in the entire series. I alway personally theorized it was because he's _technically_ got firebender genes in him. Maybe some part of his body was able to utilize those genetics which helped him have an easier time making his earth 'hot'. Bolin got even...hotter ;D

    There was a theory that said that the main reason Bolin can Lava Bend but not Metal Bend is because of his fight style and the way he was trained. From the beginning of Avatar: The Last Airbender (and leading up to the creation of Republic City) many Metal Benders were taught to use earth bending in the traditional way, by being tough, an immovable force, and becoming one with the earth. Bolin, however, learned differently, focusing on being fluid and swift because it’s what the Pro-Bending matches called for. That being said, metal is a stiff and hard material, whereas lava is a liquid. It goes with the flow and is constantly changing, which makes sense why Bolin can Lava Bend
