In my latest video '2017 Mini John Cooper Works Review - testing the convertible at the Evo Triangle' I take Mini's most powerful variant of their convertible to the Evo Triangle.
The Evo Triangle has been hailed as one of Great Britain's greatest driving roads and is situated in Wales, north of a small village called 'Cerrigydrudion'.
The John Cooper Works badge has always been reserved for the most powerful and expensive Mini's. With the latest generation 'JCW' Mini being available in Hatchback, Convertible, Clubman and Countryman form.
The latest John Cooper Works Mini's utilise a 2.0 litre petrol turbo engine which produces 231bhp and 320nm of torque. Performance statistics for the manual convertible JCW Mini I drove were: 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph. Loosing the roof does mean you have to lug around over 100kg meaning there are slight performance loses over the standard JCW hatchback.
The convertible in this video is not a car you see frequently on the road, with most customers tending to purchase the 3 door hatchback JCW Mini. The hatch being the cheapest and lightest JCW Mini you can acquire - lightness being a key variable Mr John Cooper himself valued highly when developing the original Mini Cooper back in the 1950s.

Abarth 124 Spider is a 1.4 Turbo? if it had a 2 litre Turbo it would eat the Mini because it's lighter?
Terry C Yes, the 124 Abarth does have a 1.4l turbo, not 2l. That said, it's much smaller than the mini and isn't suited to drivers approaching or over 6ft, due to the seating position and low roofline.
Also, whilst the build quality on both is fantastic, the 124 is very cramped inside and has very few configuration options.
My girlfriend and I have just been through the buying process, and she almost bought a 124...... But ordered a Mini instead. More room, better interior, front wheel drive, more MPG, more robust feeling drive, better residuals.
I can see why it's possible to compare the 2 vehicles directly, but if you drive them both back to back, it's apparent from the offset that they're very different weapons.
In the same way that it's hard to define a direct competitor to the 124 (other than the MX-5, obviously), the Mini sits in it's own little bubble. Maybe, at a stretch you'd peg it against an Audi A1/S1 convertible?
If the Fiat was a 2.0 t I would be looking to buy one. 1.4 doesn't do it for me
