My best friend's husband made a self published book about his mom and dad. It told their story of meeting in a concentration camp during WW2 and surviving to get married and emigrate to Canada. He made enough copies for his siblings and all of their children so that they would know where they came from and how lucky they all are. He had one left over so he gave it to me. What an honour.

The volonteers meet them several times, listen to them, record them and then write their storys. We then print it and offer it to the family. It is a wonderfull expreience and people just LOVE it! I feel that the key to leaving a legacy is also knowing that less is more. I have over 20,000 photos in the cloud! Who is going to EVER look through all that? Recently I have started going through my photos and actually creating digital albums of the best moments that way they are a pleasure to look at. I may print them into actual physical albums.
You'd be surprised. We have probably 10 huge boxes of photos that were our mom and dads and grandparents. Everytime we get together we sit down after the meal and go through the memories. Now we do a slide show of our digital photos with our grandkids. We share laughs and some tears at the memories.
I left work at the start of the year due to injury. I'm still a few years off retirement age. I'm wondering what now. A trip to UK would be nice . Just before dad died he gave me $3000 . I asked what it was for. He said it was to cover my costs to go with him to UK. We never went , it would have been difficult, and I don't think the airline would have let him go. I guess the lesson in that is do it now, whatever it might be.
I just knew you were a girl dad! My dad also raised three daughters. Unfortunately he passed away in 2015 at the young age of 67. Your common sense approach to life and advice remind me of him. I enjoy your channel very much.

"There are pieces of your life your kids will never know". This is so true. Especially for those who might choose not to talk about their traumatic pasts...but at least you'd have these stories. It's almost like the opposite end of a child's baby book where you record things they'd never know or remember about themselves. I'm disappointed we never thought of anything like this before my MIL suddenly passed away. I'll look into it for my FIL.

My daughter in law gifted me storyworth. I just published my book that I will gift to my 7 grandkids. So many stories of my life that my kids did not know about me. This was such an amazing gift …. To not only me but future generations.
I am to writing a book ! Both my youngest adult children were diagnosed with bipolar and other mental illness ! I have been separated from their dad for 25 years . Also my daughter was born with a rare syndrome so she’s constantly sick with minor and major issues . I suffer froM crippling anxiety . I need to write it’s therapeutic ! I also started a huge decluttering journey in 2019 seriously . Since I have to care for my daughter full time , I don’t have time to chase clutter . I can’t believe over the years how much I’ve spent over 100.000 dollars on the latest fashion ect . I feel guilty , but one has to give themself grace and room to grieve your guilty feelings . I like this a lot ! Trips over the years , have many memories .

I was in my surgeon's office early last week (post surgery) and during my appointments we always chat about family and travel. My daughter was also there. He has 4 children..one just out of college (working in DC), one in 2nd year (Vermont) one just entering (Rochester, NY) and one high schooler at home. The kids were flying home (here) and then the entire family left yesterday for a vacation to Maui. He also took his 86 year old mother. We were laughing about how he had been saving his charge card points for all the plane tickets and this was probably his most expensive family vacation ever. He was over-the-top with happiness to be taking this trip and I pray it is everything he hopes it will be. I wll find out on my next appointment. Your video validates how important it is for families to spend time away from home - even if the destination is not far. Just get away from the house to enjoy experiences together in another space. Can't be cheap or even frugal when it comes to time well spent with those we love and hold dear. ⏳️
Registered right there at the top of my need to leave our family story even before I cross over to the other side. Spirituality is of great importance, but family gives meaning to spirituality in my opinion. Just last Sunday my 34 year old granddaughter got a big ol' lesson on life that she said she would always cherish because it was direct and came as a spur of the moment conversation.

Especially urgent I find, since my husband passed away a few years ago and there are a lot of memories that now exist in my own head only. After that happened I have felt such a strange, heavy responsibility and urge to share things about him and about me, so it will not just disappear when I leave. And as you say, we dont sit down and begin to tell stories. For sure I am going to check this out. Again, thank you for talking about things that really matter.
I have to laugh... answering the questions and doing these videos is incredibly important and we're doing similar with my father, but one of my best memories of him will be catching him actively dreaming while sleeping in a chair... hilarious! He was fighting with the person in his dream which manifested as actual talking, hitting and kicking out here in the real world. It was so funny to watch and recalled a similar memory of my grandfather doing similar many years ago. Of course, these are not memories my Dad would actively recall of himself, so I like the idea of sharing that with him, so he knows the legacy of fond memories he's leaving... a feedback loop of legacy, so to speak. Catching conversations between you and your daughters/grandkids for posterity is another angle you might want to consider. Conversations lead to other stories that wouldn't be caught and captured otherwise.
I oil paint. That's a legacy I'm leaving. I journal. I try to be positive, but there are some telling moments my boys will probably enjoy reading.. And I'm a published author who stopped for various reasons, and I've just started a book for my grandkids. Not looking to publish this one. It's just a fictional book for them to enjoy. Legacy's come in a variety of forms.

Start where you are. If you have kids, I'm sure they would LOVE to hear more about your mother. I need to think about that with my own grandparents. The favorite parts of my parents passings, My Mom's funeral was full of people sharing stories of various things they had done together, and I got to know lots of stories I hadn't heard before. My Dad's funeral was the coldest day of the year (-40°F) so it was very different, but even though it wasn't as suddenly as my Mom oddly (she had been given 6 months because of breast cancer and was gone the next week, he had non-terminal chronic illness, but died to the flu and overall was gone in 3 weeks) so we had about 3 days of everyone coming to say goodbye and reminisce, so we got to hear the stories while he was still with us.
Tim, I really appreciated learning about this app. I hadn't heard about it. I loved hearing your thoughts about what the trip meant to you. The ability to leave your own writings is a valuable gift.
I've written letters to my kids, in case I go unexpectantly, and already planned and paid for my final arrangements, but you have inspired me to make some videos. I'm 68 and healthy, but you never know. Maybe I'll play my guitar and sing some silly songs, take a walk on my 3 acres and identify wild flowers, video the Great Blue Heron, the deer, the fox, the Eagles, raccoons...They will remember these things since they grew up here. Tim thank you for sharing this subject… I’ve been thinking on what happens to my memory as well as my photography after I’ve passed, hopefully quite a ways down the road… Several years ago I created a photo book containing selections from my first ten year’s of photography. There are only two copies and it’s not that I can’t find the same photos on my computer, but holding a physical book is so much more satisfying.
You had me thinking about one trip with my family. We never went anywhere far but we did spend time together. Good thing we can still make more memories with our family. ❤❤❤

Other ideas would be to leave a journal or notebook of helps/lessons learned to prevent your younger loved ones from making the same mistakes, like a life handbook with different topics and dividers. Also buying an Interleaved or Journaling Bible and writing all your prayers and notes in it with dates so people could see your spiritual journey. ❤🙏❤

Great idea Tim, I will look into it. I am a singer. I love to sing in piano bars, and with bands here in California. I live very close to the desert communities around Palm Springs. I have several piano players that I sing with when the kids gather here in the desert every year for my birthday we always go somewhere where I sit in with the band or the piano bar and we have dinner and I sing, during Covid. I took the opportunity to record a CD of all the favorite songs that I sing. I made copies and gave them to each child and grandchild. It will be a good memory of us all coming together, 😮this year we’re getting together again.I always rent a 8 bedroom House on the golf course in November and we all gather there, it’s about 10 of us. It’s a wonderful time I have children that live in 😮Arizona and I have children that live in the UK. They all flock to the desert for grandma‘s birthday and this year I turn 85 and I’m looking forward to it very much. Thank you for your wonderful TH-cam channel.😢😢

In the end I’ve decided that it’s a story from a liberal mind, where there is no happy ending or “moral to the story”. It’s just a play with no conclusions, direction or sense. It is the classic story of grace (jean Val jean) overcoming legalistic dogmatism with only black and white (javer). Val Jean doesn’t know what to do when the clergy doesn’t press charges for stealing his silver. Instead, he gives Val Jean even more. So Val Jean dedicated his life to the nurture and protection of the daughter of a woman he discarded in his hubris. It overwhelms me to tears every time I see it.

Ive been working at filling out a book called Grandmothers journal. with questions and memories and sometimes i white out questions that dont count.,,, You have given me a few ideas of questions they might like to know... thank you ...and I'll go check out that site, sounds interesting

Great idea Tim, I will look into it. I am a singer. I love to sing in piano bars, and with bands here in California. I live very close to the desert communities around Palm Springs. I have several piano players that I sing with when the kids gather here in the desert every year for my birthday we always go somewhere where I sit in with the band or the piano bar and we have dinner and I sing, during Covid. I took the opportunity to record a CD of all the favorite songs that I sing. I made copies and gave them to each child and grandchild. It will be a good memory of us all coming together, 😮this year we’re getting together again.I always rent a 8 bedroom House on the golf course in November and we all gather there, it’s about 10 of us. It’s a wonderful time I have children that live in 😮Arizona and I have children that live in the UK. They all flock to the desert for grandma‘s birthday and this year I turn 85 and I’m looking forward to it very much. Thank you for your wonderful TH-cam channel.😢😢

I watched Le Mis 3 times. I didn’t get it. I asked my son what it was about. He said “mom, people are miserable”. In the end I’ve decided that it’s a story from a liberal mind, where there is no happy ending or “moral to the story”. It’s just a play with no conclusions, direction or sense. One great song is it’s only benefit. Comments welcome.
It is the classic story of grace (jean Val jean) overcoming legalistic dogmatism with only black and white (javer). Val Jean doesn’t know what to do when the clergy doesn’t press charges for stealing his silver. Instead, he gives Val Jean even more. So Val Jean dedicated his life to the nurture and protection of the daughter of a woman he discarded in his hubris. It overwhelms me to tears every time I see it.
