  • Let me perfectly clear here. I am NOT a financial advisor. Everything mentioned in this video is true for ME. Your results may be different. If you are not prepared, either financially or by force of willpower, to pay these cards off in full each and every month, they are NOT for you.
A great place to explore point redemptions is Max Miles Points. He is the absolute best of all I've seen. / @maxmilespoints

What you say in the notes is VERY important: "If you are not prepared, either financially or by force of willpower, to pay these cards off in full each and every month, they are NOT for you." The credit card companies are counting on people being less than vigilant about their finances - they make a lot of their money that way. Also, it takes a pretty organized person to use the points effectively (as you do).

My husband and I have used Amex for decades over the past 2 years we find more and more stores and venues do not accept Amex because thier fees to vendors are too high. Small business owners, local restaurants, and tourist attractions seem to be where we find the issue and have to use cash or our VISA. Just something to be aware of if you're traveling.
    Safe travels to all.

Yes. I have found that especially in smaller locations. I have a Visa for those that also earn me travel points. :)

I have the Platinum Card. I think that there is usually a certain amount of resources that an individual needs to qualify for the card. Maybe that has changed. I use the card for monthly expenses. As you said, you have to be prepared to pay the entire balance monthly. You should only charge what you know you can pay off.

This was very informative! I had no idea about many of these things. I knew that you had to pay off American Express at the end of every month but I did not know about the annual fees nor the benefits. Personally, I use the capital one quicksilver card. It has no annual fee and pays 1.5% back in cash on everything I purchase everywhere. I don’t fly very much so airline points might not be that useful to me. Of course, I operate this charge card like an American Express and pay off my balance immediately. In fact, I pay my balance multiple times a month. Anytime I see a balance has made its way to the card, I use the app on my phone to pay it.

I have had AmEx for 20 years. Their fraud team have helped me 3-4 times - priceless. Also if you pre-register for their premium rental car insurance, Am Ex covers the additional full coverage insurance for only $24.95 per rental up to 30 days (I believe). That’s not the cost per day, it’s the whole rental period, and it’s automatic once you’re signed up through them. They send you some paperwork proving the insurance which you take with you to the rental counter. Also, we used several years of points to completely cover our flights to England a few years ago. I’m a big fan of AmEx too!

I have the same card combo, did global entry the month it came out in 2011 and used it coming back from an Iceland photo trip it was amazing 3 big planes landed at the same time there had to almost 600 people in the imagination line. I walked past them all up to the global entry machine put my passport in (they work differently now) 30 seconds later I was in baggage got my bag and Logan airport had a special exit I was out the door. So from getting off at the gate to my car was about 30 minutes. The boarder officer said that card just saved you about 2 hours

I had the PLatinum and the green, US citizen, living in Puerto Rico. I did not know that some Federal agency was investigating a complaint regarding AmEx discriminating policies against the US citizens living in Puerto Rico. There was some kind of settlement and after reading about in the news, iI got a letter from Am Ex. I was one of the victims, I mean, beneficiaries of the settlement.. Did not like it.

Really useful content. Here in the UK we have a wonderful man called Martin Lewis who for the past few years has been investigating all sorts of financial products and doing all the hard work for us as to the benefits….and the problems. He is now so highly rated that he gets face to face with government ministers to challenge them on things. If he gives out a message to go to a website for something beneficial the that website often crashes because so many people follow him and take up his advice. He’s so popular that he’s often on tv.
Edinburgh and Skye in March. Wonderful. I live outside Edinburgh and it’s the most beautiful and historic city. I’ve been to Skye a couple of times and that is a wonderful place….as is all the west coast of Scotland. Just be aware that it often snows in March.

If you don’t use the credits that come with the Gold Card, it’s likely not worth the annual fee. The amount of spend to make back $250, even at 4X points, must be very large. Other than a one time bonus, the annual credits are the most important factor in determining value.

My husband and I (he is the main card holder) have had Amex crads since 1978.
My husband has been give a nasty health diagnosis and I have been told the cards will be cancelled the moment he dies and any use of the card will be fined $20,000.
We have also paid for many years for the Travel insurance (they no longer offer the same insurance but Amex grandfathered in those with existing accounts).
Soon, sadly, I will not have any access to any of the benefits that Amex has offered and I will not have a limitless account to be used in case of emergencies or unexpected travel and I won't have the security of the Amex travel insurance. We travel to our house in France several times a year .
I do not like credit cards and will not have one to fall back on so I am unsure what I will do when he dies.
My daughter has also been a member on my husband's card since she was a student. She has already stopped charging to the Amex card so there will not be outstanding charges when the worst happens. Hers is the largest part of the the account so I cannot imagine it is good practice for Amex to cut off co- members rather than look at the records and retain the living card holders.
Other people like me, who have their cards on a main card holders account should beware that their main sourse of commerce is in jeaopardy in the event of the death of the cardholder even though the subsidiary cards are in their own names .

Actually better off using cards that don’t have fees and getting rewards from them. I do it monthly. No cost of living increase for educators in over 20 years in my state like those on social security who received 8 .7%. Do surveys monthly also for extra and have the full amount or more that you pay for the cards fees. And yes, paying the cards monthly for all those doing rewards is a must. The fees on your cards are way, way too high. Most internet providers are now giving promotions for Netflix etc and 50 to 100 in visa gift cards when you change providers. You can even make money with your cash register receipts monthly. Lots of ways to get cash monthly not payout cash for rewards cards.

  • @tedsorge9148

Sorry I missed this? I agree that just “spending to get points” is a bad idea. However, if I’m buying groceries, or paying the electric bill, or covering an insurance premium, points simply become the bonus they were meant to be. Like the $500 hotel bill paid for by points when I went to Asheville recently. I basically got $500 just for buying what I was going to buy anyway. Thanks for your comment!
