      I think his brother has more round and short face compared to his face which is kinda thin and longer. Also the bone structure is slightly different, his brother has more defined one, and the skin tissue itself..I mean. Wow I come off like such a creep but I swear i studied that stuff a bit. That foundation was what we called “pancake” makeup. It was thick, oily and went on really heavy. Your skin had no texture because it was buried beneath a layer of lightly pigmented grease that was set with plain, white, baby powder. There were some that were tinted, but they were hard to find and too expensive for most ordinary women. And, after you removed your makeup with your cold cream, you washed it with soap and water then put on another layer of cold cream before you went to bed. There was no such thing as dry skin with that regimen. Even straight soap couldn’t dry out skin covered in Pond’s cold cream!

    • @vianjelos
      @vianjelos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

So many ppl young and old feeling like they have to do the EXACT same thing they seem these self described makeup experts and gurus do when really it's just a normal person with their own opinions, or recreating something THEY watched. You dont need to do it bc everyone is different, you dont need all the steps or to buy all the things, especially when they are no benefit, or in fact actually make you look worse and harm your skin

      What’s crazy about baking and a defined contour is that these techniques were originally used in drag makeup when men would dress up to play female roles in the dramatic setting in the old times. But it’s crazy how drag makeup has evolved! Now, if you want to use these techniques to do drag style makeup on purpose, nothing wrong there. But if one is doing it because of a trend or because they’re seeing beauty gurus do it online, well, they’re in for a rude awakening.

    Since I was born in the 1940’s, let me give you a lesson about cold cream. There’s no way on earth you can remove 1940’s cold cream with water. My grandmother, mother and aunts all used cold cream then tissues it off. This was followed by a wash with Ivory soap or Camay which was considered a beauty bar. They all had beautiful skin and didn’t start to show wrinkles until late 60’s/early 70’s. I guess they were doing something right.

      I use ponds to take off my makeup and I wash off the cold cream, use tissues to wipe it off, and then I go in with some witch hazel on a cotton pad (or two, if there’s still excess makeup). I have hardly any acne these days, but back when I was using the most popular brands my acne was awful.

    Seeing this it's incredible to see how far skin care and makeup has come! And the amount of products we have at our disposal now is phenomenal. It just amazes me that eventhough they had such limited access to products the women of the 1940's looked so elegant, polished and put together (maybe it's still the romaticised version in my head!!). I'm sure if we were to try and replicate the look we'd end up using triple the amount of products and still not be able to embody that vibe! Great video Robert and it was lovely to see James too 😊

    I think this topic is so fascinating! I have a history degree and I’ve actually researched this a bit! “Vanishing cream” was a less oily companion to cold cream. It was oil in water, rather than water in oil. It was supposed to “vanish into your skin” but leave it moisturized enough to hold on to your face powder. Vanishing creams contained stearic acid and an alkali which caused a “pearly” sheen that was desirable. They also contained a polyol, like glycerin, as a humectant/preservative. Pond’s still makes variations of this.
    This cream/powder combo was created to make a more matte face (grease paint was popular in early, silent films but as film technology improved something more natural looking on screen was needed. Women copied the look.)
    Max factor creates the cream + powder combo with varying shades-the first real “foundation.” So cool! I believe it’s English Heritage that does a cool series on historical makeup, all the lead ceruse and awful problems caused by it. 😬 They do a great job with everything but the Ancient Rome look, imo.

She used ponds cold cream to remove makeup, toned (sometimes used witch hazel) and I can’t remember if she used ponds to moisturise too. Her makeup was Leichner stage makeup, I think they called it ‘pan cake’. Her powder she used to get from a store that they would mix on the spot to get your skin tone.

    This is exactly how my grandmother did her skincare up until her 80s. Ponds cold cream, wiped away with a tissue, no 2nd cleanse. Sometimes a little more cold cream added back on as a moisturizer. Her makeup was minimal too - mostly powder, mascara, and lipstick (she used the lipstick for blusher as well). I once asked her what makeup she used when she was young (1930s, 40s) and she said she only had one tube of red lipstick. They didn't have much money to spend on non-essentials.

    Just found you guys - love your channels.
    As an esthetician, you are correct about oily skin, if you consistently strip the oil off your skin it will overcompensate by producing more oil. Also toner typically is used to return the skin to it’s natural ph, which is normally on the acid side of the ph scale. Cleansers are alkaline so it helps to bring your ph back after a cleanse, so the protective barrier that your skin provides from bacteria etc. is maintained you can use a moisturizer to do the same thing also. 😎

    It's so funny how people don't change. My grandmother was born in 1938 (married in 1955 and had 2 children by the time she was 20...She was absolutely darling in that post-war way, she was so cute). I can remember she let my sister and I into her makeup (which by the 1990's she had nixed the vanishing cream and been using actual foundation, though she sometimes called it vanishing cream - it wasn't. It was cover girl), I loved her little powder puff - something she STILL uses. I can remember when it came time to take off the makeup she'd get out her large jar of Ponds. No water. Just ponds and some tissues. So funny to see that she probably saw this film in gym class in the 7th grade or something.

    I remember Clean and Clear's alcohol tone, it was so painful to use. I'm convinced that it permanently damaged my skin cuz now I suffer with extreme dryness. Now I use tea tree or green tea based toners (without alcohol) to prep my skin for moisturizer/serums, because if my skin is dried out it has a hard time absorbing product.

    What a wonderful way to end my week watching you two lovelies. So help me I smile whenever I watch your facial expressions. I was hoping you'd all speak to the ghost white look of the instructor. I realize her look was acceptable for the time and of course the filming but all I could think of was Casper the ghost. Sorry, I may have had a couple of drinks as well.

    My great Aunts used this routine. Even in their late 80's they had great skin. The vanishing cream had an oily texture. Dove soap was great compared to the lard soap they grew up with. They taught my Aunt and myself this cleansing routine. I used this routine for a long time and then science improved the way we take care of our skin/faces thank goodness. Have a great day.
