I find it so interesting when you talk about Fashion Week and how eight minutes is a good amount of time to do the model's makeup, but then there are tons of challenges like "Doing My Makeup in 5 Minutes" where the person is freaking out because it takes him/her like twenty minutes just to do his/her brows. I think it would be awesome to see you do a video where you time it and show what you do when you only have a limited time to do a look while still looking good.
The fashion week models are so naturally fabulous, to begin with, that 8 mins of work seem enough 😂 no acne to cover, no sparse brows to fill, etc. None the less, I'd like to see what goes into those minutes of magic!
It is funny, but at FW we usually do simple or bold/simple looks that need to last for 12-20minutes, so we often don't waist time on priming and setting (only if needed). And it always looks better when models have radiant skin. Some looks are more contoured, some are just fresh blush.... And some of them take a lot of time that's why all models arrive together, and you prepare all the ones that are in the first show, than the ones that are in the second/third/fourth/ but not in the previous ones....and then you change the makeup as you go for the ones that repeat. Anyway FW gave me the practice of a lifetime and I learned yo be more efficient on any job.
I find it "fascinating" when these youtubers and Instagramers use a glowy primer, then thick layers of strong-coverage foundation, then tons of powder, extra layers of highlighter and then finish it off with a dewy setting spray. It's like: do you actually understand the difference between dewy and matte?
I love when Robert leaves his scar alone. I have a large, visible scar on my cheekbone (right where one would typically put hilighter) and it makes me remember that scars are normal and don’t look bad. They just make you look like a normal, unique human being. Also, the eye primer unibrow cracked me up.

Billy Bernardo yes but oddly enough Robert actually praises a lot of James’ techniques! i’d say his techniques are better than other big youtubers, but of course he still has a lot to learn & he isn’t considered a professional MUA!
A technique I hate is when people “carve out” their brows above the brow with their far too light concealer they use under their eyes. So it just looks white above their eyebrows and doesn’t blend into their foundation at all. Another “trend” is the severely overly contoured nose that makes the person look like they have a pointy witches nose 🤭
"there was a primer that i absolutely hated and people were like 'yeah but you have to tap it in for 5 minutes'...W H O T H E F U C K H A S T H E T I M E" omg this baffled me 😂p *cough* *cough * louise *cough*
“Oh robert have you finished your model yet?” - “Oh no actually im still just tapping in my eyeprimer” i literally choked on my water i love you robert 😭😂💜
I just realized how much instagram has brainwashed my idea of applying makeup with this single video. No wonder my skin had so much texture, I had been doing it all wrong 💀
ik this comment is a year old but i relate so much. i recently have been applying so,e of roberts tips and it’s helped my makeup look so much less cakey but also like i have makeup on bc i do like my makeup to b visible .
I can relate to that i have bought so much powders because i saw how flawless everybody was. But now i know its alot about lighting. Sophdoes live has a simmerlar video that Robert had done. Putting the Lights out one by one. Now i hardly juse powder. Only when i am swetty wen its hot. I have a lot of hot flashes. But i never bake. Horrible. I Lough so hard of his faces and reactions 😂😂
The whole thing disappears because they take it off off-camera *and that evil clever laugh is the best thing ive ever heard in my 1 month of quarantine*
Best quotes: "who has 5 minutes to tap in eye primer" "Literally took 15 minutes to blend" "*Intense staring*" "I can't even look at myself"*laughing* You're always the best, love your intense judgement stares.
It’s so interesting seeing you turn the light down and seeing all the texture and pores and cakiness- because honestly you don’t look that bad at the normal distance and it’s this blurred well lit version people think they’re going to get when they watch influencers do their makeup excessively like this! I swear 99% of gurus are afraid to show you a true gnarly close up because they’d look ten times uglier, moreso if they’re being paid to show off certain products that only look good under beauty lights
I recommend realbeautykristi, she does her makeup but turns the light down periodically so you can actually see her skin texture. She also has these few videos of her using a microscope on her skin and makeup products
First, I would just like to say that his laugh is EVERYTHING. 😂😂 Second, I'm going to be 29 this month and I just seriously started getting more and more into makeup. I came across him by accident and have been binge watching his videos and I've learned more from him than in the last few videos I've watched than I have watching any other youtube beauty "guru's"! I won't go anywhere else to get my tips and tricks. 💯💯🤷
omg i was literally just thinking the same thing! i used to watch beauty gurus for years when i was in high school but stopped because i just didn’t care for it anymore. bc of quarantine i decided to get more into makeup and just a couple of robert’s videos have taught me soooo much more than anyone else! i also vibe with his personality so much more hah
basically they say they apply 15 different products with 6 different tools and blend for 45 min to achieve the same complexion you would get by using 3 products a brush and a sponge and 5 min.....while being less cakey....
FINALLY! A make up artist that doesn’t buy into the excess product trend. When I see people put layers upon layers of primer, concealer, contour, foundation, then bake. It’s just sooooo much and messes with your skin if you do that on the regular. I think you’re right, the trend was created by product companies to selllll morrrrre! I just found your channel this past month and I Love you Robert, you are fantastic!
Wallis I thought it popped up when Nikki tutorials was shameless about how much she enjoyed her huge amounts of makeup but I can see brands pushing for this in non disclosures
I don’t understand the heavy product usage, especially with liquids and creams. Trained painters and artists KNOW that using too much paint absolutely ruins any attempt at detail or technique. Artists also know how important BLENDING is with the brush. Makeup artistry follows these same principles, it just uses the three-dimensional face as a canvas!
I love the confidence with which Robert says "SO what we're going to do is..." like this is a genuine makeup tutorial and not wholeheartedly satirical, I love the commitment
Robert, I am a "recovering" makeup trend follower. There were days that after trying some of these techniques I literally had to wash my face and start over. The makeup brands are laughing all the way to the bank because of all the product they are selling. I am an older woman, and I wear less makeup now than ever before because I just don't need it! THANK YOU for being the voice of reason. (PS After your color correcting I was expecting a ghost story......😱).
Honestly same! Getting into makeup started off with a cheap mascara and eyelier lol. And as I grew this love for it social media stuff started to break in and baking was a cool thing for my 13 yo self lmao. So I just baked my undereyes and then I thought it was my fault that my skin was textured because "everyone does it so they're all right so I might just do it wrong" and I stated doing the setting spray over baked skin and then press the spray in with my sponge and all these beauty gurus said that it made their skin "so much smother" so once again I thought it was me who was doing it wrong cus I saw no difference in texture before and after setting spray. So I stopped baking and my makeup looked soo much better since then. I mean, now I'm 16 and I just stopped using makeup at all for months now for skincare purposes. But Robert is honestly such a life saver.
Yeah, same here. I'm 35+ and obviously have started to get natural fine lines under my eyes and I just couldn't understand why my baking looked liked someone had blown flour on my face when it looked so good and flawless on TH-cam. Lesson learned.
I used to be a makeup trend follower, then I went to cosmetology school and got a license. And I will be 100% honest I did a look on myself the other day and the products weren’t working with my skin that day so I actually took it all off and wore no makeup.
@@linam.5980 I AGREE! My husband teaches high school and remarks at how some students wear tons of makeup and it just looks like a caked on mask. You do YOU!!! I love just wearing a bit of concealer, mascara, brow pencil and some lipgloss. Nothing is prettier than real SKIN!
I’m so glad to find someone who hates under eye baking, I thought I was either doing it wrong or using the wrong product because it always looked so dry and it creased so much! Thank you for putting my issue into better words than me 🙏🏻
I promise this is not an insult BUT. Using these techniques makes it look like you are wearing a mask of your own face over your own face, if you know what I mean? I'm so used to seeing your face and the way you apply makeup normally, so seeing what your face looks like because of these crazy methods, especially the baking and the highlighting application, really throws off your proportions. I can see why you don't like these methods. Your explanations and the application really *show* why these methods are not always necessary for people.
This man. The one makeup artist I’ve found (my mom introduced me to his channel), who stays AWAY from drama, and isn’t shouting or getting super wound up. It’s chill vibes here. Mhm. 👌🖤
honestly thought i was living in a parallel universe where nobody could do makeup without 4kg of product but the gods listened to my prayers and sent our saviour
It literally hurts my brain when I see girls with absolutely perfect skin with perfect texture and tone, no blemishes, no flaws, putting an inch thick layer of concealer, foundation, contour, bronzer, highlight and powder and baking, then a setting spray! Good lord girl, your skin must be choking under all of that! Foundation was only ever meant to even-out the skin tone, not be like a mask! As someone with porcelain skin with very fine texture, I've always suffered from slight breakouts which appear so much worse due to how pale and fine my skin is and even my dermatologist says this - she's always told me that my breakouts are not actually bad, it's that my "English Rose" type skin emphasizes any blemish making it appear more noticeable than it really is - if that even makes any sense at all! Oh how I would kill for that perfect skin and I'd rock it in all of its natural glory, without so much as a hint of concealer.
Same I have pale olive skin (the profile is an older photo, I wear so much more sunscreen now, and am more pale than ever). Sometimes I itch my facial skin gently, and it turns red for so long. smh
Robert's anecdote about being backstage, THE ACCURACY, the embarrassment one feels when they take too long to do a models make up and having the key artist point it out is so real LMAO 🤣
Yknow when your bronzer breaks in your bag and everything has a coating of orange on it? In the nicest way possible Robert that’s what your face looks like by the end of this.
never understood baking, when it was a trend people were like wtf you don't bake it makes your makeup last?? my skin is textured anyways as I have eczema AND acne prone skin. I tried it once and could feel the powder sucking the soul out of my under eyes. still haven't mentally recovered
it's the only thing that works on my extremely oily face. i only use it for special events, parties etc and oil will still penetrate the thick layers of make-up and i still need to blot. :( but seeing people who dont need this do it... 💀
Kazaku Kogalniceanu oh I can see why some people would use it in certain circumstances! my skin is super oily during the beginning of my cycle so I get it, but n o p e for me
Ema S. I meant I never understood the trend as excessive powder and product increases my oil production, if it works for you honestly that’s great! you do you 🥰
I'm glad Robert keeps his makeup real. You know he's a real artist and know what people actually like to look like in real life and not just look good in photos/camera.
OMG send help. Robert is baking! Send a well check! I think he’s going to throw up! On a side note I would love for him to take a beauty guru and do their makeup the correct way and take away all the excessive makeup and cake and see how beautiful and fresh they can look!
I would vote Tati. She has lovely skin and doesnt need as much as she used before Scott barnes and she sure as heck doesnt need the amount after she collared with him.
i used to think all these "techniques" were legit way to apply makeup and i always wondered why i would look so scary and old looking with all this shit on my face lol. thanks for confirming that it's all wrong. your brother has been helping get my skin in tip top shape and now you're going to help me look put together!!
When you finished with the color correcting step, I swear you were the exact shade of Lieutenant Data on Star Trek, lol! That kind of green-grey-lavender glow!
Also that cackle at 11:28 is like the definition of shady. He can call people calling him shady a misunderstanding due to his accent all he wants but that doesn't make it true. Not complaining though, I enjoy the shady comments.

"there's some affiliate links but they'll be clearly marked" just for this statement I respect you even more than before. Usually youtubers only write " some links are affiliate" without stating which ones, so it's not being transparent. Thank you Robert for being you and fornot changing for "fame and fortune"
I remember the first time I ever “baked” my under eyes 😱 I thought I must’ve done something terribly wrong!! I just looked awful! I tried a few times after and quickly came to the conclusion that I simply cannot “bake.” You can’t really trust some of these IG and TH-cam methods. They’re just not practical for the everyday person!
Same I was so eager to try it bc I have really bad eye bags and under eye dark circles but that amount of product and powder caked on only created a really dry dusty look with a lot of creasing and only accentuated the flaws I was trying to hide Never again Just enough powder to keep the product from moving around is really all you need, which is NOT that much.
Here in my tropical, humid country, it's surprising how baking like most 'gurus' do is also excessive. Just do it right and fluff it out so it won't get dry so it's not too much hehe.
I have a powder that I’m not sure if it’s meant to be used as a baking powder, but I use it to set my concealer because the one I have is a bit too light for my face, and the powder happens to be an almost perfect match to my skin tone.

@@RobertWelsh no glitter? you hate that stuff 😅
Right?!? “Done...... just done”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A technique I hate is when people “carve out” their brows above the brow with their far too light concealer they use under their eyes. So it just looks white above their eyebrows and doesn’t blend into their foundation at all. Another “trend” is the severely overly contoured nose that makes the person look like they have a pointy witches nose 🤭
right?!? and then they're like "omg my nose is SNATCHED" but i'm looking at them like ... why would ANYONE want a nose that looks like THAT?
It really depends on fave structure because it does actually look pretty good on some people. But I agree with you otherwise. :)
and then they add the dot of highlighter right on the tip

I said 'baking' 😂
His laugh when he looks in the mirror after colour correcting is killing me 😂😂 poor Robert

Perfect timing I was up to that part as I read this 😆
basically they say they apply 15 different products with 6 different tools and blend for 45 min to achieve the same complexion you would get by using 3 products a brush and a sponge and 5 min.....while being less cakey....
Wallis I thought it popped up when Nikki tutorials was shameless about how much she enjoyed her huge amounts of makeup but I can see brands pushing for this in non disclosures
seeing people do that excess product trend makes me die inside
Thora Friganza OMG the kardashians made those insta brows a huge thing. Trends really do come and go hahaha
Just like art, makeup has no rules but theories. Those theories can go a long way when used.I think people forget that.
And besides... idk, I am a collector of makeup, and skin care.. but it’s way too expensive for me to cake that stuff all over and waste it!
i use very little product at first and then build it up
I think Makeup companies want people to use excessive makeup products so the products run out faster
I think this is more for the show of instagram ahah !
"what do you consider fine" the accent really makes it sound shadier than he intends😭😂😂😂😂

I SCREAMED at this part. I love you Robert.
@@cannsmith I just try to use as little product as my skin needs. I don't wear makeup very often anymore, so I get what you're saying😉
@@linam.5980 I AGREE! My husband teaches high school and remarks at how some students wear tons of makeup and it just looks like a caked on mask. You do YOU!!! I love just wearing a bit of concealer, mascara, brow pencil and some lipgloss. Nothing is prettier than real SKIN!

i couldn't stop laughing when he started blending the color corrector , such a funny and informative video , i love it
I promise this is not an insult BUT.
Like really! I really don't follow Western Beauty Gurus because of their literally thick makeup. Like it is like a mask.
Plus the time it takes to put on these "masks" is ludicrous.
19 minutes of Robert laughing at himself and dying inside.

MsGlamourcat I totally agree! But I have to admit that putting on a base is pretty fun, so is makeup. That might be why they do it.
I’m bringing back REAL skin to my channel! I hope you check it out!
It makes me cry inside considering I have 'bad' skin I would love to have skin like their's I'd wear like a drop of concealer of that
MsGlamourcat why do you let something so small hurt your brain, chile hon

"I'm gonna put yellow there for no reason" 😂😂 I completely lost it at the countour part. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

never understood baking, when it was a trend people were like wtf you don't bake it makes your makeup last?? my skin is textured anyways as I have eczema AND acne prone skin.
Kazaku Kogalniceanu oh I can see why some people would use it in certain circumstances! my skin is super oily during the beginning of my cycle so I get it, but n o p e for me
I add some to my forehead when I'm out for example, i get greasy on my forehead and cheeks so it looks bad and baking power helps I guess

Cynthia Biladeau I too learned the harsh reality about baking. Baking was the first technique that taught me I can’t trust these beauty gurus.
Same I was so eager to try it bc I have really bad eye bags and under eye dark circles but that amount of product and powder caked on only created a really dry dusty look with a lot of creasing and only accentuated the flaws I was trying to hide
Never again
Just enough powder to keep the product from moving around is really all you need, which is NOT that much.
Here in my tropical, humid country, it's surprising how baking like most 'gurus' do is also excessive. Just do it right and fluff it out so it won't get dry so it's not too much hehe.
Same :(( it made me look 20 years older
I have a powder that I’m not sure if it’s meant to be used as a baking powder, but I use it to set my concealer because the one I have is a bit too light for my face, and the powder happens to be an almost perfect match to my skin tone.
