Back in the day, in the early 80's, most of the network TV variety shows WOULD NOT allow their guests to perform "LIVE", in fear of goofs, gaffs and other flubs that came along with performing live on stage, with little time to rehearse and a rotating line of musical guests slated for that day's taping. When viewing this performance that Sergio Mendes, along with his group of stellar musicians and the magnificent vocals from Joe Pizzulo & Leeza Miller did on THE TONIGHT SHOW with JOHNNY CARSON, one can see that all the elements were in just the right place in order for this truly "LIVE" performance, to come out PERFECT! As it did! Now, when viewing the taping they did on SOLID GOLD with MARILYN McCOO & REX SMITH, one can see that they were all wearing the SAME exact clothing and costuming, even their hair styles were in exact fashion, signifying that SOLID GOLD was done earlier in the day and TONIGHT later in the day...the only thing different, was that SOLID GOLD was done in "Lip Sync" and TONIGHT was absolutely "LIVE"! Also, on SOLID GOLD, the prerecorded soundtrack included the shredding electric guitar solo at the end of the song and the TONIGHT SHOW "LIVE" version, did not, obviously because there was no electric guitar player present on stage. Back in the early 80's, it wasn't that easy to duplicate the sound of the record live on stage, due those original recordings were done in large studios, with multiple tracks of layering, processing and effects; to try to get that down "LIVE" on a TV sound stage, was nearly an impossible feat, but lo & behold, it was done with great success...and probably a bit of nervousness...that great unforgettable night on NBC!
As has been said, often live performances don't meet the standards of recording, but this performance by Sergio Mendez, with these two vocalists, Joe Pizzulo, and Leeza Miller is one of the best live performances I heard. Their musical chemistry is brilliant!
Together with Fred Mercury & Montserrat Cabalé, Joe Pizzullo & Leza Miller are my favorite duets of all time. On keyboard is Sergio Mendes, a highly respected Brazilian musician in the world. About the song, this live performance is better than the recording in my opinion. And the love songs of 70/80/90 are much better than all that came before or after. And YES, I'm from Brazil

It's a shame that there wasn't much Joe-Leeza live performance of this song afterwards. There's one good live performance of this song (th-cam.com/video/LbNugxHdggs/w-d-xo.html) but it was with Kate Yanai. The rest of the live performance years after wasn't as good. Joe was still spectacular though even during his 60's, but the female counterparts weren't at par with Joe's level and never close to Leeza's rendition.
