The girl that sings the duet with Joe Pizzulo is in fact KATE MARKOWITZ (she used the pseudonym of Kate Yanai at the time) and she's been singing with James Taylor (as backup singer) for more than 30 years. She is as superb singer and very good human being. Even me being from Portugal, I've seen her twice live (with JT) and hopefully I'll attend another JT concert on 4th Feb 2022 in London (already got tickets). Can't wait...

@@anthonyb.corrales4470 You're obviously a non-musician to be asking this. If you're a musician, try playing it and find out. This song has the most modulations (key changes to the laymen) of any song in history, and they're done so smoothly, you hardly even notice them. There are also a lot of polychords (which are complex) and chords with notes other than the root in the bass. And it all sounds great. A true masterpiece.

This song is composed by cynthia weil (words/lyrics) music by barry mann in 83' this version is the one that hit #1 for 4 consecutive weeks on billboard hot 100 chart and in adult contemporary chart before sergio mendez. Liza miller and ofcourse joe pizzullo recorded this, dione warwick has her own version of this song and stevie woods in 82' but sergio mendez's version is the one that rocks the music chart.
And i forgot 1 thing, this song was originally submitted to the american band earth wind and fire by the composer cynthia weil (lyrics) and barry mann (music) but they decided not to record the song.

I'd imagine trying to play this song, you'd have to root yourself in place and try not to get lost
I hear you! Came here from the Beato analysis of the song and he's right, one of the most complex pop songs ever. One of those songs that'll take me a week to work out or I'll just play lead riffs and let Sergio's keys handle the rest. That said, even sparse lead riffs may be a challenge with so many chord/key changes. I'm curious how chordify may map the song out?
This is what my parents sooth me before going to bed, just like soft rock Blue eyed soul music. it works, It still in my sleeping playlist, but after proper analysis and deconstruction? suddenly I can see and connected the dot as a musicians.
