Cowsills w/Johnny Cash (Improved Quality!)

  • Here are The Cowsills on The Johnny Cash Show in 1969, one of their very first tv appearances without founding member and oldest brother, Bill Cowsill who had been forced out of the band by their father, Bud Cowsill after a dispute that arose between the two after a family band performance at a gig.
    I've taken a version of the Johnny Cash appearance and was able to fix the color and improve the picture quality (a must for all of us Cowsills fans) to being somewhat above the quality of the previous copies of this appearance already posted online.

    Think Bob Cowsill did a fabulous job of taking the lead. ( : Just love Johnny Cash. I was blessed enough to meet him when I was 12. "Mr. Cash may I have your autograph? Well....sure son!" ( :

    • @CastleOfThoughts
      @CastleOfThoughts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, Bob Cowsill was a good leader after Bill left. Thise were some big shoes to have to follow. Meeting Johnny Cash at 12 is extremely cool. A friend of mine waited for Buddy Rich to arrive at a local gig and when Buddy finally came-a-walkin', my friend , then a budding 12 year old drummer, said, "Mr. Rich, I'm such a big fan of yours. May I have your autograph?" Buddy Rich literally pushed him and said, "Get outta my way, kid." In a moment, as the boy stood there stunned, Buddy walked back to the boy from the front door of the venue, grabbed the album cover out of the boy's hands and in a huff, he signed it and walked off. I'm guessing your experience was tad more pleasant. haha That boy, now a man, still cherishes the moment.

      He really was a great person. I met him in Austin Texas, I was playing a show with my band at the time, and we stopped to eat at a diner when we got in, and he was at that diner, I was able to get my Johnny Cash shirt signed, I couldn't pull it out of my luggage fast enough. He saw us and said you guys play that real heavy stuff right? I said yes sir, how do you know? He said you guys look like y'all play heavy stuff. I said we sure do. He said well go get em. Y'all have a good show. It was one of the most memorable celebrity meetings I've ever been a part of, they say you shouldn't meet your heroes because sometimes they're not good people, but he was definitely a good person.

    Bob was great as the front man, but in my eyes, Billy Cowsill was the heart & soul of the family... Nobody came close to his voice & stage presence!!! The father made a huge mistake, (one of very many) when he kicked Billy out of the band, that had to be so heartbreaking for Billy, I'm sure... In Canada, Billy founded a band called, *THE CO-DEPENDENTS*, wow, his music has ya dancing & feeling soooo happy, especially a great song called, *HONEY DON'T*... Billy Cowsill R.I.P. thanks for all the memories & music, you are not forgotten, keep rockin' up in heaven man, you were one of the best & that is a true fact!!!!!

    • @CastleOfThoughts
      @CastleOfThoughts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Bill Cowsill is likely the most under-rated singer of the 60's. His vocals were absolutely amazing. Bob once admitted that the group had lost its powerhouse lead singer when Bill was forced out. But as performers, I think Bob, John and Barry saw Bill's departure as a chance to take the spotlight much more often as lead singers, so that they could have had mixed emotions over Billy leaving the group. But no one can deny Bob's own wonderful vocal talent. As the oldest brother in the band, after Bill left, I believe it was thanks to Bob that The Cowsills remained in show business and are stil going strong, with each other family member, of course, being so very talented in their own right.

    The Cowsills came along when guitar rock, hippies, drugs, free sex and social change were going big. Much of their music and. similar bubble gum music went unnoticed because of the never-heard-before coliseum loud rock bands had become popular. The shock of the Charles Manson murders numbed such hard rock, including Led Zeppelin, for about 3 years giving very lite rockers a chance to blossom. But I guess that didn't help the Cowsills after their shake-up because they never made a come back after their dad-son fight. Just the TV series fashioned after them, though, was a giant success

    Many people don't know this, but the original name of this group was The Cowpies, but they quickly changed it to The Cowsills for obvious and understandable reasons. True story...

    I always loved them and when I think of the dancing styles of the 60's, no one came close to perfecting it like Susan. She was ( is ) amazing.

      Look up a TH-cam channel called Louise Palanker. She made the documentary, Family Band. There is a clip about 20 minutes long with the siblings talking about one another. Susan says she was shocked at about age 8 when told brother Richard was going to teach her dance moves. She said she learned them and still uses them.

      I did see that documentary but I missed that part I guess. Interesting. I just thought she was a natural. So cute on stage.

      @David Pellegrene, the segment on the channel I çited might be an outtake. Louise is the film maker of the documentary, and the approximately 20 minute segment with the sibs names on it is probably where it is from. Susan tells the story on herself.

    "Where's all that money in the trust fund, dad?" ... "What trust fund?" They ended up with nothing but an income tax bill thanks to dad, Bud Cowsill, who blew all the money and never told the family where it went. He did pay each member $1000 later on before checking out.

    Elle est d'ailleurs décédée jeune
