    I love how Mr Ballen gets you to see the person who died as a human being before describing what happened to them, instead of treating them like some faceless inconsequential victim. He makes sure you understand that they had a life, which pushes you into seeing these events as the tragedies they are rather than some cheap bloodthirsty spectacle.

      My hope is that humanizing these people will make them relatable to viewers, which in turn *might* make someone out there think, and thus not do these fatally dumb things.
      Then again, I may be underestimating human foolishness. 😔

    3rd story - There's a common thread in these types of stories: the person is really really invested in their bad idea even when alarm bells are going off in their heads and even when other people warn them not to. The moral of the story is, always listen to your gut instinct and don't do something when warned not to by other people who are more familiar with the situation than you. The minor inconvenience that may be caused by doing it a different way is not worth losing your life over.

    So, normally I'm not a big stickler for rules, but now that I hear Mr. Ballen's stories about how people cut corners when it comes to safety on hazardous jobs I can understand my dad's (safety engineer) constant reminders to buckle my seat-belt, not go alone at night, always have a companion in case of a trek or etc. I just can't believe how absurdely some people die and with the most common objects, truly shows how it can happen to any of us.

    • @janececelia7448
      @janececelia7448 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I was a medic in the army and a nurse for over 30 years and I used to scuba dive. Yeah, I'm a stickler for safety rules. The rules are always carefully devised and revised by experts in their field so you'd have to be an idiot not to take them seriously. Also, it often puts other people's lives at risk while trying to save yours. I'm a bit preachy but I've seen the tragedies. The worse for me was when a father threw petrol over a BBQ to get it going and he badly burned his daughter who was standing nearby. It's so frustrating to see needless suffering.

    • @Psyaii
      @Psyaii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's always good to think that the reason those rules exist is because people died, need to learn from others mistakes

    • @janececelia7448
      @janececelia7448 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thirty years as a nurse has taught me how fragile life is. It doesn't mean you can't be daring it just means you take all the measures to keep safe. I've done parachuting, abseiling, caving, scuba diving, skiing but I was trained to do these activities. Of course things can still go wrong but you minimize that possibility as much as possible. I'm also a very cautious driver who's never had a traffic infringement after 40 years of driving.

      What most of these people who are the subject of MrBallen's tragic accident stories were really lacking was just pure common sense. If a package doesn't fit into an elevator, then common sense tells you to carry the bloody thing up the staircase, not attempt to jam it dangerously into the elevator. Pure and simple idiocy are more often than not the cause of tragic accidents - and the ignoring of safety precautions, of course.

    I'm not a diver and listening to all these diving stories, I think to myself, "No way will I make dangerous decisions like that thinking I can do it."
    Then I remembered one time we went snorkeling and I veered off over a reef cliff where we literally see nothing below. I was so amazed and shocked at how dark and deep it was. When I lifted my head for some air, the tour guide saw me and quickly (slight panick) called me to go back to the shallow side, saying I wasn't supposed to be by the cliff without a guide.

      I think normally snorkelling over "nothing at all" shouldn't be dangerous, since the water will support the snorkeler anyway. The real risk probably comes from human curiosity as someone will dive too far to see more before noticing they cannot make it to the top anymore. Also predators and marine traffic could be a risk in open water.
      The case with the Russian at the Blue Hole is different, but one reason why so many people die there could be because the archway lures people too far before they notice the danger they are in.

    Lessons I’ve learned from these stories: Don’t Be Stubborn: don’t try to force something to work that won’t , listen to the advice of other people they just might know what they’re talking about. And finally, if something sounds like a bad idea, and you’re instincts are against it, don’t do it, no matter what.

    Death by elevator has to be one of the scariest ways to go

    • @Karamarika
      @Karamarika 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It scares the hell out of me. I was darting in and out of elevators much quicker after seeing the video of the young woman in China who was cut in half when she tried to get out of an elevator, but was looking at her phone instead of paying attention. The elevator kept going (rather quickly) and she fell forward onto the floor it was on and got trapped. Looked like it cut her just under her rib cage, then her lower body falls into the elevator with all the people.
      The elevator was apparently overloaded. Had to have been at least 20 ppl on it. It was in a hospital. I couldn't stop thinking about the ppl we didn't see - the ones on the floor her upper half ended up on. Absolutely horrifying. And you know it took a while for her to die. Saw a video of a man in Vietnam who had been cut in half. The video was at least 6 min long and he was still alive the whole time. Totally conscious, too. What a horrible way to go. Lying there, knowing there is nothing you can do with ppl staring at you and filming you. Although there was a man who apparently survived being cut in half, so it's not impossible. Just horribly unlikely.

Also having been ghost without my knowledge, it can feel like you're going insane. I was on a camping trip and I was the first to pass out and go to my tent, and they put a couple doses worth of LSD in liquid form into my slightly open mouth. My friends had to go get me from the woods at about 2:00 in the morning. I did not know I was awake, I thought it was a dream, I thought it was a very bad dream. My experience went from incredible panic and Terror and abject tachycardia fear to incredible disappointment when they told me what they did. That is unless the governor break which the main cable, then you are screwed unless the elevator has other cable if it is fancy. I live in Boston and remember when that lady died last year. Practically every elevator in the city is old like that one and requires you to close the gate before it can run. They’re a massive pain in the ass because a lot of times ppl will take the elevator up to the 4th or 5th floor, get out and forget to close the gate so if you’re on the first floor you need to walk all the way up to wherever the elevator is, and close the gate before you can use it. As cool as they look, I wish the city would just get rid of them all lol.

      @@cognizancecognizance8815 no worries. Honestly I’m not sure. With me I think it’s a combo of attention/comprehension and control. If I’m reading it myself I can control how fast or slow my brain is getting the info (at least I feel I can), but also when I’m being read to or even having a long conversation my mind starts to wander (nothing against the other person and not really under my control) and I’m thinking about everything under the sun except the subject at hand. It was the same at school as a kid. The teachers lecturing would send my mind straight away, but if I read it myself I had it. I could read all day long, but sitting and listening to a story normally is not something I’m willing or able to do for too long. That’s why I was so shocked I found myself listening to mr ballen’s stories for so long. Like I said with me I feel like it’s a control/comprehension thing. I hope that helped some.

      @@cognizancecognizance8815 Kevin already gave you an excellent reply, but I'd like to chime in because I've thought about this myself too!
      Maybe you can relate to this: you know when you google "how to do ___" and the first result is a 10 minute video? You know your answer will be somewhere around minute 4, but you have to sit through the annoying channel introduction and long context that you don't need first. That frustration is kind of how I tend to feel listening to someone reading a story. When you have text to read, you can skim and skip and hone in directly on what's relevant or interesting to you, without having to sit through anything you don't care about. When you're listening to someone, you're at the mercy of their pace, and you just have to wait for the information to arrive on its own time.
      I think everyone feels this to some extent, but it's also a pretty classic ADD symptom! Especially in ADD, it can be kind of paradoxical, because (speaking for myself) when something is actually really engaging-- like Mr. Ballen's storytelling-- it can catch and hold my attention VERY effectively. Like listening to 22 of these videos in a row while working... not that I'd know anything about that : )

      Intelligence would say that the most efficient way to transport an object that heavy is through the elevator. On paper, it just required less effort.
      Wisdom would say that sometimes, in order to move forward, one must take a step back. When it took that much trouble to move the package in then it would take just as much trouble taking it out. And therefore, she could have reconsidered her options as it wasn't worth the risk of potentially breaking the package or the elevator.
