How Good Was Detlef Schrempf

  • How good was Detlef Schrempf? The first German before Dirk Nowitzki and the first European born player to play in the NBA. Detlef Schrempf the Grand Teuton and played in the NBA for 4 teams. Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Seattle Supersonics and Portland Trailblazers.
    Detlef made his mark in the NBA as an underrated international basketball star, playing in 3 different decades, the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. His well-rounded abilities on the court made him a legend in his own right to overseas players and also Germany. He averaged a career 14 points 6 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
    Had he stayed in Europe and played basketball there instead of the NBA I could see him dominating anywhere he played and possibly securing a spot in the hall of fame indefinitely. Keep in mind the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is not just for NBA talent alone, there are international players who have never played in the NBA and have received this honor, which has me questioning why Toni Kukoc is not yet in the Hall Of Fame but regardless it is possible we may see Detlef in the Hall of Fame one day in the future. Till next time.....

    Det the Threat, even in Germany ignored by the mainstream as soccer and tennis were prevalent and caught more audience.
    Changed with the 1992 Dream Team and NBA hype and his 1996 finals appearance.
    Obviously Dirk Nowitzki had a stellar all time HOF careers that might never be matched by another German Basketball player, but Detlef Schrempf was an amazing role player and had very nice NBA career.

      @970 Jokic Indeed, Uwe Blab is a well known german player but had not that careers that Schrempf and especially Dirk had. But Uwe Blab was on of the first successful "overseas" Basketball players for us that made it into the states.

      As a lifelong fan of the supersonics, I always have thought of Detlef as being the ultimate "Sixth Man", even though he was a starter for most of his career. His popularity suffered from his being on a Seattle team that had a few other more noticeable near-superstar type players. But he was consistently good, and sometimes great. He was a poor-man's Larry Bird, at times, and remains one of my favorite forwards.

      As more and more european players enter the NBA, there definetly could be another german Legend in the future. In 22/23 season there were 6 german players in the NBA.

    Now Detlef is a True Underrated Player
    Super Sonics became real contenders once they got Detlef Schrempf
    They were so dope once they got Kendall Gill too
    Even though it was Hersey they made The Finals with I still liked the Gill version with Perkins, Detlef, Payton & Kemp
    That was a Super Dope Sonics Team

    if you single out his best years (89-99) - that is when he finally got the chance to play - he averaged 17 / 7.4 / 5.5, shooting 50% fg, 39% 3pt and 81% ft and! he always let the game came to him not forcing it. he was a team player, humble, not selfish...that's why he was not media favorite. why would you promote player who lays the ball in instead dunking it? :P it's all about flashy plays and stuff...but not with Detlef. that's the beauty of it

      @@90sBasketballBios awesome stats for a player who was 6th man or nr.2/nr.3 on team. i think he is among top 5 european player ever (individually). probably won't get to hof cause of low full career stats (got a chance too late) and nobody probably considers him as european (didn't play in europe and went to college in usa) but he is the first european who made an impact in nba. i'd love to see him in hof :)

    The 96 Seattle team was fun to watch, The west coast was very deep those days San Antonio, Utah, Rockets, Lakers, Kings and the East had the Bulls runner ups Knicks, Miami, Indiana. 90's Basketball was tough and most exciting sport to watch. This era is painful to watch if not for Curry and Klay tandems

    • @monolithgeometry3221
      @monolithgeometry3221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the Kings , not the 90s. They were awful . Portland and Pheonix were in the mix. The Kings traded for Webber in 98-99 ,got Divac, - Stojakovic and Ja. Will emerged and by 2000 they were finally there . The West had 6 or 7 super consistent flat out great teams . That was the best era 10s and 10s of star players

    • @damianking11
      @damianking11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is nothing wrong with the players in this era. It is the OFFICIALS and higher power. Players know they can get away with soft stuff because of soft officiating habits. Take that away and games will be as “tough and competitive” as they used to be. I can’t stress that enough😂

  • @aaartnaz
    @aaartnaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    He was an underrated passer if you ask; I always thought he was a big plus on the floor more for his making everyone on the court better and his decisions were surgeon smart. Today the game is styled more to passing passing and more passing. Detlef would kill it in today’s NBA.

    He was an awesome player. Obviously Dirk is the greatest German and European player of all time, but you cannot mention the history of international players coming into the NBA and success without mentioning Detlef (along with Olajuwon, Kukoc, Petrovic, Marciulonis, Sabonis) when talking about the important international players in the 90s. Sixth Man of the Year twice, three time All-Star, long range shooter, he's had a solid career with a borderline HOF chance.

    Basketball is the kind of game where when you're watching you'll notice good players stand out.
    That's how I got here actually. I saw some tape on Schrempf and I said "Who is this guy?" whenever I ask that question watching a basketball player I know I'm dealing with someone great. I was a young boy in the ladder half of his career. But seeing him now I realize he was a good one.
