I remember that Orlando game in Indiana. One of my sport memory`s that is ingrained in me. As a Dutch boy staying up the whole night to watch iether the Bulls or Indiana because of MIller and my country`s basketball anti hero. When he hit that basket i could not control myself and cheered like a madmen causing my parents to wake up and getting rather angry. I do not enjoy basketball like that anymore now i am older, tried watching the playoffs this year since i have some time but stopped at a certain time , why is that? My age at the time? Or has the NBA become more boring opposed to back then?
Smits had some big playoff games. I think in 98 he went for 30 on the Bulls. He was weak on the boards and got into foul trouble sometimes. However, he would give opposing teams fits because he could hit from anywhere.
He was very good when healthy. Perfect #2 option on ANY team offensively: can post and dominate when facing inferior shorter player. If matched up against a stronger opposition, had a very reliable mid range shot and hook. Defenively he is not great but certainly not a liability: can't teach height and size. even if he got outscored by some superstar center, he could still put up some 15 to 18 points and cause some defensive effort out of the other team. His foot problem was well known. So sad he only played 12 years. Great, smart, player and a nice guy. Great vid man 👍🏻
That was a great Indiana team with Reggie, Smits, The Davis brothers, Derrick Mckey, Mark Jackson, Byron Scott. Rik Smits just played in era loaded with great centers. But he was a consistent center for a decade.
@@90sBasketballBios 80's and 90's were just loaded with great centers like Olajuwon, David Robinson, Ewing, Shaq, Robert Parish, Brad Daugherty, Mourning, Mutombo. Smits was consistent 12 to 16 a game but not a superstar. But great to have on your team for a team missing a piece.
I not only saw Rik play at Marist college...but one night my roommate and I played 2 on 1 with Rik! He did not but hit threes the whole game. He was also a really nice guy!!!
Rik Smits was the OG Unicorn. He could hit three at top of keg was his shot and he blocked shots. Was ahead of his time. He be an all star in today's game.he was that good and skilled. Just ask Reggie Miller and Mark Jackson if Smits would play in today's game

I don't know about that..a lot of our Smits family members have big feet. Never heard anything about having issues with finding shoes. Though Rik is one of the biggest in the family. It's the weight with al that jumping that kills the knees and ankles
Dude held his own against Kobe Bryant, deserves more recognition
It's weird not seeing Rik in the Hall of Fame. He should be up there.
That, and the Pacers should retire his number
Bro u think a 1 x all star with no titles deserves to be a hall of famer? Thats insanity.

Rik Smits could play.........I remember getting teased when I was young because I used to say that. He had major game.
At his best he was nearly top 5 in the league. You swap him in for one the 96 Bulls centers and they would have gone 76-6.
he was not afraid
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I watched Rik Schmitz KILL my Sonics and Blazers.
Very slept on player
I was a huge NBA-fan in the nineties. And Rik Smits was 'our' dutch hero. Great to see this video on TH-cam.
Thanks man, I thought this channel would explode...the 90s was just different...best basketball era imo

Even in a conference with Ewing and Shaq, Smits was never outplayed by them during his prime in the playoffs.
look at the game on 6-5-94
Shaq owned him.

I’m 2 min into the video and I’ve already subscribed. Love the content of a lesser known 90s player and the presentation is great too
I watched him match up with Shaq while losing to him he stopped him several times and scored on shaq too!
This was a great video. And your sense of humor is hysterical.

His skill-set would be greatly valued today.

Being that tall is kind of a curse on the Smits side of our family.
Kristaps are you watching?
They didnt have shoes for him in his size when he was a kid. Totally ruined his feet even before coming to America 😓
