I have a 2009 Audi S5 (auto) 4.2L with 207,000 km on it. I hooked up the computer and it says that there’s an intake flap stuck open. Any idea what could cause this? And how would I go about fixing the issue?

If you are referring to the intake flaps seen in this video, these are located inside the intake manifold. In this video you can see them because he has separated the intake manifold in half to access and clean everything. These flaps have an external linkage mechanism that is located on the front side of the intake manifold. You can see that at the beginning of this video. The linkages are controlled by a vacuum system I believe if I'm not mistaken. So when this fails, it can be due to a vacuum leak, the actual linkages themselves failing or being stuck, or you can have internal failure due to excess carbon buildup for example and have to remove the intake and split it open like this guy did to fix.

This is the video I was looking for! Thanks! Great work! Have you installed it back on to the engine and tested it?

No problem! I actually just installed it back on 3 days ago & absolutely no vacuum leaks (smoke tested).
I am getting one code though which is probably a wiring issue I’ll have to tackle soon enough but it’s a “open circuit” for the intake manifold runner sensor bank 1. Im assuming it’s a wiring fault or I’ve heard the flap motor goes bad, there’s a “stop pin” that gets damaged which doesn’t let the motor inside actually stop in the designated spot so in theory it “overshoots” where it needs to stop at. I’ll be looking into that soon.

I was actually inspired by another great video on TH-cam to help with this job! It’s the exact same intake manifold but from a Audi A6. The persons name is Cole, he split the intake & resealed it, only he added a extra step & removed the torque flaps which I skipped over. The torque flaps are another world of pain if you wanna get into it but he goes into way better detail than my quick “collage” I put together. His video & my video would be a great combination to view for anyone going into this job.
