  • The Canon EOS-1 D Mark II was a successful follow-on to Canon's first professional EOS-1 digital SLR. The Mark II improved on the original in a number of ways including more megapixels, more buffer, and other key specification improvements. The EOS-1 series cameras are all built exceedingly solidly with good reliability, good build quality, and good components. This camera feels very well made and, in 2020, as of this video's release, it's build and image quality still hold up.
    One challenge with old DSLRs, however, is finding batteries. Old DSLR batteries are often not made. This is true of very many vintage DSLRs. The best buying tip I have for you is, if you're looking to buy one of these, find a few good batteries first and then find the camera. It will be easier to use the camera if you already have a few batteries.

    Hi David, the unknown connector is firewire. The later N allowed different formats to be recorded to different cards, so one could be raw and the other jpg. The original mkII, which you have, would only do back up, same format to both cards. The video output is for displaying still images on a TV.

    Bought one because of you! :) And I love it! One question, can I use any vintage lenses on it with some proper adapter? I use them a lot on my 5D mk2, but not sure whether I can do it on this one. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
      For vintage lenses it depends on the lens. Look for EOS EF adapters for lenses. I know that most M42 lenses will work. Some of them have glass elements the protrude from the back of the lens and if the mirror hits that it can damage the camera. So for M42 lenses, I'd suggest sticking with normal (50mm) and longer lenses as I think most of the problem lenses are wide-angle. There may be some in the 50-58mm range that are problems, too.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IIRC yes, and that would be covered in, I think, video 3. I'd be surprised if it doesn't have that capacity since I think the D60, 10D, and 20D did (I wrote scripts for those cameras last night, but I've written about camera manual 65 scripts in the last two weeks so I may be mixing up some of the features.)

    Thank you for this great video. I have been a Cannon film camera addict since the early 1980s. I own a EOS 1 film and a nice digital Cannon point and shoot camera.
    I just inherited a EOS 1 Mark II N. I haven't used it yet. In this video you skipped over the right side of the camera where the memory cards are located.
    Question is can I use any size card? I was given a 128 card. Will it work? Also, how do you set up the two cards. I watched all three videos and couldn't find the answer. Thanks.

      Oh, regarding the card, if it's a 128GB, I doubt that it will work (but I might be wrong.) If it's 128MB, it will but will only hold a handful of images. I think I was using a 16GB in this and it worked well and held a lot of photos.

      It's been a few years since I sold this, so I can't recall for sure but two ideas pop to mind. One is to check video 3 in this series and see if there's an LCD on-off option. I forget if there is or not. If not, the LCD may have failed. That's no entirely unheard of.

      There was not a whole lot of change from the 1V at all. The Mk4 is a really incredible camera. I'd love to make a video series about it at some point. I agree. i think that the amount of film I shoot would decline a lot if I had more professional DSLRs.

      That depends on how familiar you are with photography. If you're just starting with DSLRs, just try program mode for few days to get used to the handling. If you've shot cameras for a while, whatever settings you've used in the past will work in basically the same way with those cameras.

    I HAVE A 1DS MK2 WHEN I PUT MY FD EOS ADAPTER ON THE CAMERA AND TAKE A PIC THE MIRROR JUST GOES UP AND STAYS THERE, BUT DOES NOT TAKE A PICTURE AND SEEMS TO SHUT IT SELF DOWN. THE ADAPTER WORKS FINE ON MY 350D, WHAT IS WRONG ANYONE KNOW?

      Does your camera do that without the adapter or with native EF mount lenses?

    • @billienomates1606
      @billienomates1606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidHancock No, I can put the eod fd adapter on my 350d or 50d and it works fine. When I put it on the 1ds mk 2 the mirror just parks itself in the up position and the camera switches off.
      I currently have a sigma af teleconverter 1.4 on the 1ds, so I put the eos fd converter onto the front of that on the 1ds, same thing happened again, mirror parked itself and camera switched off.
      Although when I have my sigma zoom lens attached to the sigma teleconverter the 1ds works fine. I can only assume the 1ds is looking for a signal from the lens and the fact the eos fd has no connections nor the fd lense I assume this result happens. Although I really would like a definitive answer as it is giving me a head ache.

      @@billienomates1606 Huh. That's a new one on me. So I have two guesses. Most likely, there's a short in the camera. Something that causes it to lock up with the adapter. • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the camera telling you how many photos are in the process of being written to the CD card. The buffer is the camera's internal memory and the space where photos are held until they're written to the card. The camera writes them in the order they were taken. The data is important if you need to use burst shooting before the buffer is empty and need to know how many photos you can take in your burst.
