    If your plastic nut thingy fails, it looks like a stack of 2 or 3 M12 or M14 washers would do the job, and you would be able to get them in loads of places 😀

    Hi Zac, The rusty split pin is probably what broke the plastic as iron rust expands as it rusts. So always use stainless split pins or Monal Metal split pins in a marine environment. If you know someone with an industrial 3D printer then you could get a replacement made. I would do it for you but I am back in the UK.

    Zack, I have heard your mention using acetone on several occasions. I hope you realize how flamable acetone is and handle it with the utmost care. We have had several boat fires in the U.S recently caused by acetone use. Only use it in open air -- not in the bilges or even in the cabin. A very good precaution it to keep the lid on the container unless you are on deck. Nothing worse on a boat than a serious fire.

    Another outstanding video. Again, well done. The noise of a whirling prop can get bothersome. If you have tried putting the transmission in reverse gear after cutting the engine, and that doesn't stop the spin, there is one more option. If you wrap the prop shaft with a rubberlike material, between the transmission and the packing box, you can clamp an oversized vice-grip onto the shaft without damaging it. The vice grip pliers should be long enough to rest against the interior hull and prevent the shaft from spinning. I had to do that on a boat I had a few decades ago because the "velvet-drive" transmission would still free spin even in gear. Beware - you should tie a red ribbon to your throttle, and put a red ribbon or tag on your keys whenever you lock the shaft - to remind you to remove the vice-grip pliers before starting the engine! (you don't have to ask how I learned that part!) Bob on Wild Rose

      Cheers Bob. Putting it into reverse doesn’t stop it. That’s a really good idea, I’ve already got some vice grip pliers and rubber. I’ll give it a go this week! I’ll make sure to leave a note on the starting panel!

    Zach, Now days 3D printing might be the easiest choice in remote locations for a plastic piece. If you can find anyone with the right plastic & a printer. And agree on a price.
    A decent machine shop could make a reasonable facsimile out of any number of different materials. Even wood could work for a bit, in a pinch.😁
    It's been many decades since I worked on a small outboard but if memory serves me correctly, that cone only serves a couple of primary functions. It's #1 function is as a spacer between the prop & the "split pin" that keeps the prop from backing off the shaft when you put it in reverse. (Usually right after you sheared the pin that locks the prop to the shaft.😉) #2 is to protect the end of the shaft from excessive marine growth. It's cone shape is mostly for looks as it's hydrodynamic effects are of minimal concern. A properly sized "Donut Washer" or stack of washers will serve as well.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes. 🙋‍♂️

    Hi there. Apart from being annoying having the prop spin is sometimes not so good for the gearbox. Can you engage reverse once the engine is stooped, I do /did this on my current and previous boats, silence is golden and bonus -it doesn’t wear out your running gear or fray your nerves…?

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mandala, as our gearbox is hydraulic it won’t cause any issues to it by letting it spin. Leaving it in gear also doesn’t stop it. However, I’m currently looking into another fix.

  • @Hotzenplotz1
    @Hotzenplotz1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To reduce rolling of the boat you may want to consider a spinnaker with a foil like a parasailor. That's a brand. Works of course only downwind... But the foil will stabilize the boat impressively.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ll look into it, thanks André!

    • @sailinggizmo
      @sailinggizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parasailors come in around 2 or 3x the price of an A sail on a sock.... and they take up a ton of room in the sail locker.

    • @Hotzenplotz1
      @Hotzenplotz1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sailinggizmo If the choice is a Gennaker I'd clearly prefer one with a top down furler. A sock still has lots of risk in to entangle in the forestay. Or the sock won't come down because it's halyard has turned around itself. Have seen many cases myself and heard from a lot more. Also every experienced sailmaker and long term sailor will tell the same. A Gennaker won't stabilize the boat as a foiled spi would. I'm considering myself to buy a Gennaker with furler for my 26ft centreboard boat as an spi is too hot to me. Especially with the class requirement of 55m2. The sail area is only 20m2 and the spi supposed to be 55? For sure not me on coastal waters of Brittany or the North Sea. But as a long term sailor you want good sleep in comfortable cruising. That's what the foiled spi is good for. But I'd also want an top down furling Gennaker. The Foresail is the most important for aerodynamics, the Main is often just a accelerator for the wind speed in the Foresail. Depending on the wind direction and strength. But I'd never buy a Gen with a sock, especially not for a long term cruising crew of 2. Never ever.

    • @sailinggizmo
      @sailinggizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Hotzenplotz1 We love our gennaker in the sock, and are comfortable raising or dousing it single or double-handed. Mind you, we are conservative with our sailplan offshore and let current and expected conditions dictate our sail changes. We will carry the A-sail up to 15-16kts TWS depending upon the sea state. Furling kit on A-sails is all pretty neat stuff, but have you seen what happens when the furler causes issues? @SailingZingaro just posted their 4-hour ordeal trying to unwind an issue with a furler at the masthead, it involved going aloft underway and caused some damage to their kit.
      All things are compromises in sailing, especially in the cruising world. I do like the added layer of protection the sock offers the lightweight gennaker sailcloth when it is going through an open hatch as we raise or stow it.
      After a few offshore miles we have learned to keep "never" and "always" out of our vocabulary. "Never" open hatches underway... "Always" reef at sunset... "Never" run your kite at night... "Always" use your AIS and navigation lights... on and on. Those are guidelines, and the prudent sailor will consider the totality of the situation and conditions and carry on as safely and efficiently as possible.
      Don't get me wrong, we would love a nice carbon reaching gennaker on a furler along with a symmetrical spinnaker, but space (nor money) doesn't allow for it. We have to compromise, and give some space to our spare parts, tools, stay'sail, storm sails, dirty laundry, beans, paddle boards, cheap rum, etc etc.....
      Fair winds and following seas @André Bauer, don't forget the Route Du Rhum start is bright and early tomorrow AM!

    • @Hotzenplotz1
      @Hotzenplotz1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sailinggizmo And that's the point. With an reliable furling system there's no need to be conservative using the Gennaker or not. Could you please send the link for the video of Sailing Zingaro? Often I couldn't agree with the things on that channel. The strong impression that they risk too much and treat equipment badly let me disable the abo.

Create an Inspection checklist to gonover the rigging, Hull, through holes, rudder bearing, steering links, sails, electrics etc... If you make your own and do it everytime you stop after a journey of more than 48 hours or so, you'll stop issues before they become critical... I do this in aviation and sailing. You don't need to tighten oil filters up that tight. If you do you'll struggle to get it off come the next oil change.
    It'll be messy when you come to take it off, because the filter casing will collapse and puncture as the filter strap crushes it.

So I used a bit of leverage, as the vehicle wasn't really as safe as I would like on the road, knowing he'd fit me in, in an emergency, So I pulled into the Yard stating what the problem was, and luckily his father was still alive, who I had met as a kid with my Grsndfather, so I started chatting with him, and reminiscing about my Grandfather, went into the house for a cup of tea to Co tinue Chatting about the old days, and ny uncle who had kept getting the lorries serviced there, then leaving me with a freah cup of tea, he popped out to see his son. Outcome, Full Checkover and Service, list of things to replace when the parts came in, changed what the had as spares in stock, and a shiny new HGV Servicing Contract. Win ! That lorry in the next two years, became as good as new, and it had one seriously happy Diesel Engine I would cheerfully go zanywhere on the Continent in - apart from crossing the Border from Switzerland into Germany- Nightmare. But I'm rambling again ho hum. Bottom Line Diesels love to be Loved. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍🙂 PS. How big is your Dinghy ? Perhaps worth zsaving up for a New 4 stroke Outboard ? I'm going to stick a 6 hp on the 3 mtr Seago Hypalon Air Deck Air Keel. Enough power and really wickedly good fuel Consumption, with a 3 gallon external fuel tank, 100 mile range easy. But Never Ever Put Ethanol Mix Petrol in them, but worth adding Fuel treatment as if you are, as the additive orotects fuel lines, Carburettor and engine seals. Ethanol Mix also hammers your fuel consumption due to Ethanol's Dreadfully low Energy Density. ☹️

    The plastic is merely a spacer for the prop, shaped to look like it reduces resistance in the water. Pointless. Use stainless washers to replace the broken part and a stainless or brass cotter pin.

    How was your Biscay crossing? From what I have read, the Bay of Biscay is notoriously rough.
    I loved seeing your climb to the island chapel. It really makes me miss the days when I was reasonably able-bodied and could do stuff like that-though even at my best I was not as athletic as you two. You could never get me to jump down from the boat to that ramp!

      Biscay can be a ruddy Nightmare. These days I stick to well onto the Continental Shelf as the Border between Cintinental Shelf and Deep Water, can get indescribably Bad News. Pleasant Weather windows between good stopovers and hops along the Coast For me is the way to get round it very enjoyably. They had a pretty good Biscay crossing tbh. There is a video they did of it.
