The Private London Car collection full of the rarest Custom and Bubble cars

  • Jonny Smith visits an incredible private London car collection full of the rarest custom and bubble cars. By private we mean it is within the basement of a block of flats, and is only seen by owner (and serial automobilia collector Gary Hillman). From his ex-Jay Kay Ferrari FF and 1959 Cadillac Eldorado convertible daily drivers, to his hundreds of vintage pedal cars, Gary Hillman's Car Cave is like no other.
Amazing to think that on an unassuming South London street pedestrians are walking past some of the world's most famous custom show cars, built by non other than George Barris. Barris was the creator of numerous wild customs throughout the 1950s to 1980s, including the Batmobile and the General Lee. Gary used to own 12 Barris custom one-offs, but now has 4; Alvin's Acorn, The Sidewinder, Sand Draggin and Pool Hustler.
Amongst these dusty custom legends sits rows of 1950s bubble cars. Gary not only collects BMW, Messerschmitt, Trojan, Heinkel and many other quirky microcars, but he also part owns the Peel Engineering firm which remanufactures the world's smallest car - the Peel P50.
And if you appreciate motorbike stunt riders, Gary owns one of Eddie Kidd's bikes and Evel Knievel's old Messerschmitt TR200 bubble cars. Weird but true.
Please see the chapters for each vehicle featured in this episode.

Jonny's productions feel unpretentious, raw and minimally edited. TV productions are full of fluff and inauthenticity. Although not on TV now, I don't know how people watch the fabricated, fake scenes of shows like The Grand Tour, when they have challenges and races.

Totally agree that these need to be viewed in a museum setting with all signs on the walls. I’d happily pay to see this collection. Used to own a Trojan way back when, drove into a parking space then would lift the back end in to park it as reverse gear was difficult to operate. Not a very safe car as the back end would tend to wobble like a rudder on a boat so constantly correcting the steering. Heating was a hazard as it took hot air off of the exhaust pipe.

Needs to do some restoration on the show cars (or at least lightly buff them up), clean up the other micro's and peddle cars and put them somewhere that people can come see them! That's history being hidden away and forgotten by everyone! Should have the Batmobile peddle car that was sitting on top of the pool table with the other Barris cars! These need to be out and seen so younger generations can see and be inspired by them and older generations can remember them. Great collection and great that he's saved them from being crushed or recycled into doorknobs or something, but it's a shame to see them sitting, rotting away, flat tires, and built up dust all over them.

Wow! As collections go that has to be up there with the most unusual and unique there ever can be. Love it! 😎

This was bar none one of the most fascinating car caves I've ever seen, anywhere. Great job!

I’m picturing him eating a pasty in a high vis in the FF with a mountain of paperwork on the dash.

What a wonderful treasure trove of fabulous machinery. I've always had a soft spot for the little Messerschmit bubble cars that look like someone sawed the cockpit fuselage section off an Me 109 and stuck some wheels on it, but Gary's Messerschmit in Evel Knevel colours really takes the biscuit. Brilliant!

Absotively chuffed! Reminds me of the loft of a friend in New York City, filled with antique photography equipment and other vintage memorabilia.

Love it. I too love the older custom cars. Andy Saunder's was a hero of mine when I was about 12 years old. Keep them coming Johnny.👍

This is beyond awesome, and hats off to the guest for letting us in to the ultimate mancave - exactly what I'd do but dialled up to 11. Great to see, and goes to show Jonny's credibility in the scene.
Would love to have a crack at the Peel's.

Thanks to Gary and Jonny for allowing us a glimpse of this simply unbelievable collection. The collection alone could fill a museum and a 10 part series of programs all by it self! Just when you think the Late brake show cannot get any better, Jonny brings us Gary’s collection! I look forward to many many more episodes, hats off to you both!
