      I used it as my daily driver for about 8 years, it’s great fun, I’ve become slightly used to having the comfort of the merc, and the easiness of the merc especially in winter.
      Our daughter had a lupo as a first car followed by a polo, forget how light and nippy a mk2 golf is even compared to the newer bigger polos.

    • @Geckatron
      @Geckatron 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retnrolf3057 My brother who knows more about these things than me informed me this evening that my car is a 1988 model too - which kinda makes sense if the number plate thing is correct (Digifant instead of K-Jetronic etc) - every days a school day. Never used mine as a daily - was pretty mint when I got it (2007 - think it had had a paint job apart from the roof) and was scared of getting a ding - never mind someone mite nick it. Spends most of it's life in a shed now - spent a few years outside before that. Still gets a run when its nice out - though Covid has meant not many miles in last couple of years - just over 80K on it now, but MOT has run out and booked in end of March (I live in NI). On the polo thing - had a look and apparently a 2021 Polo GTI is a bigger car (and heavier) than the Mk 2 - but packs more of a punch than my 8V ha ha. And I'm sure the Merc is a step up comfort-wise from the Golf, my other brother has an older CLK 230 and it seems a nice wagon.

It was a pea-green ‘Sud TI (also an earlier chrome bumper) which first fuelled my love of Alfa Romeo - one used to scream down our road twice a day, and I thought it sounded glorious. Iv got so much more respect for people who buy used and high mileage cars because that's all that they can afford and use them every day as apposed to people who buy mint trailer Queens and nestle them away as investments. High milage original heroes are much more Interesting as are the owners

    I've had two Alfa Suds, a four door and a two door Ti. The Ti had an oil leak ( explains why they all had Agip stickers on them) the oil used to get onto the inboard brake disc, when you stood on the brakes the car would abruptly turn to the right. It also had an issue with the pcv valve ,under acceleration to oil filler cap would blow off. I got tired of buying filler caps so I attached mine with a length of sink plug chain, I'd accelerate, the filler cap would go bonk under the bonnet and I'd stop and put it back. No points for guessing what eventually happened to them both....

    What a fantastic collection. I remember my dad having those traffic light air fresheners that used to make me feel travel sick as a child.
    Having no garage to work in I feel your pain working outside. As someone who shops at the bottom of the market myself I think I'd struggle to maintain such a vast collection of cars. The majority of these are really my era.

    Does Harry know about the GTI ENGINEERING badge on the golf? They were a VW tuner that raced mk1s in the late 70s/80s…and made awesome engines.

    • @retnrolf3057
      @retnrolf3057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It came with the GTI engineering badge and also a matching little decal in the quarter light.
      In the tons of paperwork there was with the car, a leaflet about power steering, if I remember rightly built nothing about the engine, so wondered if they did that?
      BUT
      I went from driving a 2lt turbo to having this as my daily driver and I’ve got to say for a 8v, both Harry and I were surprised at how pokey it was and have wondered if it had been tweaked by them?
      I believe GTI engineering were based at silverstone weren’t they?
      If they were anything like Vauxhalls Courtenay’s they only put badges on their cars that they did conversions on

    One of my favourite episodes you have done of this nature... this guy has done what us petrol heads should have done in the past. Fair play to him. Every day I regret flogging my toys I had 10-15 years ago... Porsche 944 S2, Jag XJ6 4.2 Sovereign (83), BMW 1602, I won't go.on as I can see what i am typing through the tears.... unfortunately wives kids and property have become those cars and I haven't had a toy for 5 years. This spring, that needs sorting. Anyway enough therapy, fantastic, brilliant, great cars and such a good guy. Top job. 👍
