    I don't get to talk about The Simpson family's relationships in detail in Simpsons Histories, so I thought it would be fun to do some Character Duo videos. Hit up the different ways characters have played off of each other over the years. Still kinda playing around with the format, may just do a more generalized video essay format like this one. If you have any character duos you'd like to see a breakdown of, let me know and it'll help me where to go for the next one!

      Flanders' physical attributes are often purposely hidden from Springfield (status quo joke, Ned is 60 years old, etc.), Homer might have realized it just recently... Marge, on the other hand, knows for decades.

    I think Bart and Skinner would be a good relationship to explore. They obviously have a rivalry but it is clear they both have some respect for each other, as shown in episodes like “Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Badass Song” and “Grade School Confidential”.

    People always talk about "Flanderisation" and how that "killed his character" and all that, yet to me Ned will always be one of my favourite characters. Being one of the few major supporting characters to go through so many major status quo changes he's grown and evolved probably moreso than any other character on the show. While he may have been run pretty ragged with ideas over the seasons, I will still always find a simple joy in his diddly-dang-doodly speech patterns and overall good nature.
    No relationship in other entertainment media can quite capture the dynamic Homer and Ned have, even if it isn't the first or last of its kind.

    • @TheRealJims

      The weird thing is that Flanders probably isn't the best example of Flanderization on the show these days. He did get exaggerated quite a bit in the middle teen seasons, but they course corrected and he mostly feels like the same as the early seasons

    You’re bang on about the brotherly aspect, especially in the context of the show’s age. When the show was younger, Homer and Ned fought and got into trouble half the time they interacted, but now in its 20s and 30s, they’re a lot more kind and generous to each other. That metaphor really hits home.

    • @rayvenkman2087
      @rayvenkman2087 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wonder what new possibilities could be had with them if the show finally adds a permanent resident to 740 Evergreen Terrance that doesn't disappear into the void after an episode and have a new character or an existing character that can act as a foil to both of them to spice things up every once in a while. Maybe someone who can both play the mediator and the instigator between them according to his mood of the day.
      There's only so many ways you could do the Homer vs Flanders formula in a show that's been around so long that you can measure years with it before writers start retreading familiar plots again. Maybe that's just me.

  • @EntityofDarkness696

    I like to call this kind of friendship "Begrudging friends", it's usually when although one party (Or neither party) will admit it, you can still tell they're friends. Homer and Flanders is kind of like the reverse SpongeBob and Squidward, with the happy-go-lucky neighbor being our main character and the grumpy relatable lead being the neighbor. Homer (And Squidward) may not admit it often, but they do like their neighbor on some level.
    Now if only I could find more friendships like Quark and Odo, that would be great.

I think Ned defintely knows that Homer isn't terribly fond of him for various reasons, jealously is the most prevalent reason, and for as much of a jerk and an ass Homer can be towards him and his family, it was clearly accidental, and I guess for Ned that's all he needs to forgive Homer.

      Also the stadium would be liable for having open back crowd stands. Yet, Ned doesn't bring up such thing.
      He's such a good guy he won't sue a stadium for being unsafe for spectators. If the Stadium had made sure people couldn't jump or fall off the stands to a potential death, then there'd of been no deaths. In the end, the Stadium is more at fault than Homer.

    Very good job on this project! I love The brothers concept. I see them as lot like Brothers too. They truly do bounce off each other well and make the stories very entertaining. I think doing a video on Lenny and Carl would be fantastic too! When you have time.

    Another great Simpsons video! I laughed, I cried, I wrote “Screw Flanders” over and over until I met the 1500 word count on my restaurant review for my local newspaper. Seriously, I understand why Homer laughed at that heartfelt letter Flanders wrote- it had the word, “bosom” and we know what happens when Homer hears the word “titmouse” (he giggles like a schoolgirl). Anyway, I love these! ❤ please make more 💜

    Flanders is the Yin to Homer's Yang
    Almost the opposite is every respect but you can't see one without the other
    Homer may have deep resentment and jealousy to his neighbor but he ultimately does like him
    Much like Spongebob and Squidward or Phineas and Ferb with Candace, it may be one sided in some cases but they tolerate each other from a place of love and respect

    This is a really amazing video, and I would love to see more of these relationship type videos even though the ones you listed might be the only ones you can get super detailed in. Homer and Ned’s relationship is one of the more fun combinations in the show, because they are perfect foils for eachother. Moe gets along with homer, milhouse and Bart are usually on the same page other than the climax, and the main family always ends on good terms. Ned and homer episodes are always different and it’s fun to see which version of their friendship will happen that episode.

    I recall reading that the entire joke behind Flanders as the Simpsons' next-door neighbor is that he's meant to be a subversion of the whole "wacky neighbor" trope; Flanders was, in general, a nice and friendly guy, and Homer hates him despite not having much of a reason to hate him. Of course, this got fleshed out significantly as The Simpsons, as a series, went on, and started to explore just how much of a "nice guy" Flanders really is, and just how patient he can be with a neighbor as obnoxious as Homer.

    I know that the status quo states otherwise but I think that after all these years the relationships between the characters has changed, technically Barney should be Homer's best friend, bu it's clear that Homer hangs out with Ned way more than he does with barney or even Lenny, Carl or Moe in One episode we find out that Carl didn't even consider the guys his friends, and if we look into It they're relationship Is pretty shallow, in most episodes the guys immediately turn on Homer when the town has had enough of the Simpsons, the only person who stays on Homer's side Is Ned, so I feel comfortable saying that Homer and Ned are indeed best friends, an unusal and mismatched friendship but a really close friendship

  • @e-122psi3
    @e-122psi3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Christmas interaction is cute call-back to Homer's initial rivalry, how he always hated Ned for being better off. Here he knows full well that Ned has gone through TONS of crap in his life, and shows an act of sympathy without any coercing. (Even if they end up spoiling the moment. :P)
