    this is going to sound really strange, but have you ever considered doing a simpsons histories on the pink donut? it feels like such a ubiquitous piece of simpsons iconography but from the episodes i've seen (mostly early stuff) donuts very rarely feature in the actual show??? why is a pink donut the thing they use to represent the show and not a can of duff beer? that seems like a much better icon for the series, when did the donut suddenly take over?

    MIke Scully in another commentary track explained why he used the full credits so often:
    He didn't like that syndication cut scenes from the broadcast versions, so he cut most of his episodes short enough to fit the entire opening credits, thinking that syndication could cut the opening and leave the episodes more intact. Another writer on that commentary track said that he's seen those episodes in syndication and that they leave the full opening, and cut scenes from the episodes themselves, defeating the purpose of leaving the full opening. Scully then let out a very pained "ugh."

    I don’t know if this has been mentioned already - there’s 300+ comments to read, in my defence - but IIRC the reason behind the long opening credits being used in so many of Mike Scully’s episodes was intentional on his part. On one of the commentaries, I remember him saying it was to prevent scenes from the body of the episodes being cut in syndication. He was hoping it would make the people responsible for syndication cuts just edit the opening down instead of cutting scenes from the episodes.

      That's a good reason. Those syndication cuts are really annoying. Manjula's first appearance in the show, showing her as a child before Apu left India for America, is actually cut out in syndication.

    • @gretaburton8371
      @gretaburton8371 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Omicron9999 Yes, that’s a good point, but at least Scully cutting it himself makes it a conscious decision from the creator, instead of outside interference. A creator who knows the story intimately cutting it down is very different from some corporate agent cutting it down; the creator gets to judge what is necessary and what isn’t. Whether the judgement of the creator is actually always right is debatable (Scully practically admitted that it might have been a mistake to cut this scene from Kill the Alligator and Run, after all), but it makes sense that he’d want to try to keep some creative control.

    its worth noting that in syndication this episode got cut even further, the part where the train hits them and is pushing the Simpsons car is very jarringly cut in a way that just jumps straight to the conductor prying it off the train, completely removing the parts of them falling asleep in the car and homer getting food from the dining car. Broadcast TV is obnoxiously paranoid about how much time they have to run ad's and don't really care how much shows have to be butchered to accommodate that, hell when Adult Swim ran King of the Hill I was shocked at how many scenes I was seeing for the first time because fox cut them even in prime time airings.

    As an international viewer who has never been to Florida, I honestly believed the alligator being alive at the end was one more (of several!) dig at Florida and its residents being too stupid to check of it was actually dead. The whole episode makes fun of Florida and the subculture there, and it's far from the only show to do so. Florida is a regular punchline of jokes about the US after all. I think the episode holds up on its own just as it is without the need to recut it.

This channels discussion of showrunners in general is what got me interested in the shows production, so I always appreciate your videos that head that route!

    If the biggest issue is “how did the alligator make it to the courthouse without people noticing”, just make it clearer (through dialogue or a sign) that Captain Jack was lying in state.
    So when he *does* Lenin his way out from his glass box to crush Simpsons continuity, it’s a bit more reasonable...
    Or change “Alligator walks out of courthouse” into “Delivered alive on truck, turns out folks had been trying to call to say he’s alive but *insert reason for not picking up*”, if it can be animated in time

    I have a potential Simpsons Mysteries idea: in the commentary for "New Kid on the Block," Conan O'Brien mentions that he wrote a large portion of an episode that he wasn't credited for; then drops this conversation to avoid getting in trouble with the guild. Which episode was it? There is some speculation that this was "Last Exit to Springfield" because it matches Conan's absurd style more than the actual credited writers Kogen and Woolodarsky.

    The key to Scully's bad episodes are that they're so bad that they become more hilarious and fondful over time; you have to LOVE hating them. In contrast, Al Jean's bad episodes are usually just... bad. For example, I will see [people enjoying and laughing themselves while ranting about "Kill the Alligator and Run" and "Saddlesore Galactica"] more than I'll ever hear [anyone attempting to talk about "Co-Dependents Day" past a disgruntled sigh].

    Amazing video TheRealJims - I love just HOW MUCH you'll break down an episode on something like this. The whole issue regarding the Alligator in 'Kill the Alligator and Run' has kept me awake at night for years! ....Actually, when I saw the video come up I did kinda have to ask myself "Wait, which episode is 'Kill the Alligator and Run'?", as it's from that myriad of post-Golden Era episodes that I struggled to have as much interest in and many of which blurred into one. I did recall it as being a lesser episode which I never much liked, though.
    Either way, it is interesting following through the whole "the writers just don't care" thing when sometimes, such as this, it's the opposite - it's an episode that's required a lot of extra work and which they really had to juggle. On totally unrelated and yet similar point, I'm currently watching every single episode of 'Classic Doctor Who' and going through one of it's weakest patches with some noteriously weak stories, and yet looking into the various behind-the-scenes production issues of the time has made me at least respect what they were up against in trying to get the damned things out on-screen... So I guess I can kind of compare that to instances like this. I dunno, that comparison worked when I started typing it but I forgot where I was going with it!
    Also... the actual shot of the alligator emerging down the steps of the courthouse near the episode (now I've remembered which ep it actually is!), I always assumed to somehow be a nod or homage to a well recognised shot in 1985's 'Dawn of the Dead', where a 'gator indeed waddles down some courthouse steps (in a zombie infested city), a shot that was even used on some of the posters for that movie, and even wondered if there was originally some sort of tie-in joke with that movie more that got deleted (but seemingly not). As with the (non)-death of Captain Jack and so much about 'Kill the Alligator...', it's just a mystery. No wait, I finally got it. The joke was, that Captain Jack was now actually a zombie alligator, and was now gonna go around eating people. It finally makes sense.

    Honestly I never had an issue with the plot twist at the end, the show has always had a tendency to do weird stuff, so the gator coming out of the courtroom seemed like one of those instances to me.
    If we need an explanation... I believe Crocs and Alligators go into a dormant state when flipped upside down, in the deleted scene he is still in the same position, maybe in their shock and grief they never bothered to flip him back, luckily he eventually managed to snap out of his nap on his own just in the nick of time.

He's a lower number than Lenny, but SO much older than him, and they get a number based on the order they joined. So, since the only ways to join are be the son of a Stonecutter (Burns would have been in LONG before Lenny), or save the life of a Stonecutter, he would have had to save someones life. I ones read or saw a video about some older episode having word "ass" changed after it was aired. The episode had both Mr. Burns and Bart saying the word, but the lines were switched afterwards, so there is only one ass said aloud, but the character saying it was chanced.

    I've always thought that Mr Teeny quote was weird. Even in an absolute sense, Trilogy of Error made a pretty decent amount of sense. That's especially the case when you compare it to something like this, or, say, the ending of Bart the Murderer. Just a very strange episode to use that line on.

    I love that driver’s License and ADR joke.
    I think seeing your thoughts on them really explained why they were so willing to let the alligator scene go. It wasn’t done well and this episode has so many good scenes.
    It works well enough without the explanation, I think I’m happiest with “a wizard did it”

    I feel simply adding a line to the radio newscast at the diner and mentioning an upcoming memorial for Capt. Jack at the courthouse, would have worked pretty well.
    That said, I know that it was probably a bit too late to record anything new at that point.

    This was a fascinating episode, it's more of a deep dive analysis into the economies of TV producing.
    Do more like this, maybe with some other eps and explain why their scenes were deleted.
    I've always been curious why the "Robotic Richard Simmons" was cut when it was such a good joke.

    • @Oecobius33
      @Oecobius33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The writers actually talk about why they cut Robot Richard Simmons in the DVD commentary. When they screened the episode for the show's staff, it just didn't get a laugh.
      I suspect it's because it's kind of a gimmick joke, so because the staff had already seen the script, they didn't find it as funny. But for fans, the idea is much more surprising and unexpected, so the humor lands really well.

Mainly because I love how at Homer's imaginary funeral in that episode has Heckle and Jeckle as guests just to call him "a real sack of crap." And I'd get disappointed because I wanted to watch that episode for that one scene because when was the last time you ever heard someone talk about Heckle and Jeckle?

      If you're looking for a true reptile etymology fun fact to make up for this one being fake, "crocodile" comes from an ancient Greek compound word meaning "worm of the stones".
      Unfortunately etymology is pretty much never so clear-cut and sensical as "not crocodile", instead we have to live with the fact that people from centuries ago thought crocodiles look like worms.
