      its depressing that we keep getting "bart never grows up and becomes a loser who lives a miserable life" stories. these characters have been around for decades, many of us grew up with them, is it so much to ask for for the show to make us feel good sometimes?

    Most of these Bart romance episodes completely convince me that the show was became desperate to age up the characters a few years. If Bart is 13, a lot of these episodes just make way more sense.

    • @sebastiancarreira5832
      @sebastiancarreira5832 ปีที่แล้ว +215

      Full disclosure, I barely watched a few episodes since season 23 but like since season 10 Bart and Lisa could have easily been aged up to like 15 and 13 to make most of their plotlines make more sense (including a couple of status quo changes in the middle like having Skinner promoted to middle school principal and Krabappel promoted to middle school teacher). I can't think of any storyline from season 10 or later where it wouldn't make more sense for Bart and Lisa to be teenagers than for them to be little kids.
      I think the main reason they never came around to that is keeping Maggie a baby, even having her be just two or three years older would force them to jump around to prevent her from speaking like they do in future episodes and keep her non-speaking character going on. I think for that it would have been awesome to make her actually be mute (and retcon the few times where she did talk or it was implied she could talk, although that would kind of ruin the ending to one of the most beautiful episodes of the show).

      The series never aged them up, but at some point you can tell the writers started portraying Bart and Lisa as somewhat older. You could make Bart 14 and Lisa 12, and not a lot would change.

    It's kinda fascinating how as the show progressed, you can tell the writers ran out of relatable 10 year old stories for Bart, so they started portraying him as more of a teenager in order to give him more varied stories. The two episodes where Bart gets a driving license show this image perfectly, in one he invites his friends to a roadtrip with no plan, in another he immediately tries to pick up girls.

    It's a shame we never really saw Laura again. I think they could've even dropped the romance subplot and just given Bart and Lisa a chill older friend to hang out with every now and then. The idea of her being their babysitter even opens up a lot of opportunities to make that happen.

    The music teacher episode has one of the best jokes. Skinner comes off something like a greyhound bus looking rough and says "It could have been a day and could have been forever." I'm reminded of a joke in "The Squirt and the Whale" that I use as an example of the show still being really funny at times in the HD era.
      There's a scene where the guy in the sun suit at the solar panel booth says something like "Solar energy is a bright idea!" and Homer replies with "Here's a brighter idea... getting a real job!" and the guy in the sun suit just hangs his head in sadness. It's delivered really well and it's straight to the point without the typical Jean era fluff. Really caught me off guard.

      Same reason why every single time Lisa gets A best friend (cause she really doesn't have one canonically), they have to write them out of the series last minute.
      And then randomly fluctuate Lisa hanging out with girls from her class and being a social outcast, to artificially keep this problem going, instead of just giving a bigger role to Sherri and Terri and be done with this whole charade.

    What I always really appreciated about the "Bart's crush" episodes from earlier episodes is how authentically they seem to capture how those relationships feel to you at that age. Episodes like New Kid On The Block and Bart's Girlfriend do a great job of putting us in Bart's shoes, and accurately capturing how enormous and life-or-death those feelings... feel at an age where perspective is very limited and fleeting. Watching those episodes always resurrect brief glimpses of my own childhood crushes, and how it felt going through them at the time. Later episodes of this kind seem far too removed from that childhood perspective, and lose a lot of their appeal as a result

    • @jonatanoderso
      @jonatanoderso ปีที่แล้ว +24

      New Kid On The Block is so akwardly relateable. Especially because of the "I got a crush on a older cool girl"-aspect.

    • @BB-te8tc
      @BB-te8tc ปีที่แล้ว +16

      New Kid On The Block really captures that feeling of being a kid and suddenly seeing your first glimpse of being a teenager, too. There's the crush, there's the fact that Marge and Homer leave Laura to babysit and Bart tries to be more "grown up" as a result, etc. It's really resonant, especially since I was Bart's age around the time that episode originally aired and was just starting to find girls interesting.

    Interesting thoughts on Bart being inspired by what he's seen from his parents - particularly as it leads to comparing Homer and Bart's personalities. Homer was always a fool whereas Bart is clearly more intelligent, so he can't get away with the same things. He uses the inspiration of Homer's idiocy as an excuse to be lazy and self-centered, whereas Homer's lack of intelligence is more forgivable because it is authentic. Homer is more willing to let his big heart shine because he often really just doesn't know better. Homer doesn't pretend to be smart. Bart is more calculating and manipulative.

    Here's a much more depressing thought. As you said, a lot of his relationships are based off of deception. But as we also know, Bart has a huge complex about his self worth. So, from his point of view, why would he ever show his true pathetic, fuck up self to anyone? That'd just guarantee he'd never get with anyone anyway. It's also part of why he doesn't mind getting married for what he thinks are good causes (saving a cow or being a dad to an otherwise fatherless kid); he doesn't believe he has any worth to begin with, so sacrificing his future for some good to happen seems like a good path. It's not like anything he ever does is ever allowed to go well anyway, even when he plays by the rules and does good things, so who cares, right?

      Reminds me of another 10 year old boy who had problematic relationships based on deception: Timmy Turner from the Fairly Oddparents. With Trixie Tang and Cindy Vortex (from Jimmy Neutron), Timmy used magic to make his crushes like him. For ex., he wished to be a popular kid to get Trixie's attention and he pretended to be a genius to impress Cindy. Like Bart, Timmy doesn't feel like he has much to offer anyone and that he's not good enough, so he makes wishes to at least appear important or make someone pay attention to him.

    Sometimes I believe that they should have made Bart 13, but decided 10 and then they were stuck with that age. He has a lot of storylines about getting close to things that sgould be too far from this reach at 10. At least three episodes where he drives a car. And the emotional maturity that is demanded from him at his dating live. As well as episodes about getting his first job, or learning the dark truths about adulthood.
    Os another perspective. It they would be able to expand their ground if the three Simpsons children were in different stages of Childhood. Maggie as a baby. Lisa in the middle of childhood, and Bart with one foot on teen years and other in childhood.
    The simpsons have a billion episodes, so it would make some episodes better and some words, but it would make some serious episodes a lot of less awkward.

      Eh, Bart's first job was as mobster bartender. If he was actually a teen, it would just be playing the trope straight.

      They never revealed her age, and she is seen going to Springfield Elementary, but with the jokes about Jimbo and co. being held back several times, to the point Kearney has a kid, it seems weirdly likely she may be around 14.
      Mind you, the alluded to Rygelian Avatar parody made me all kinds of uncomfortable, cause they just straight up had Bart do it, while in an alien's body but still.
      Or then there's that joke about Martin really being an adult working undercover at Springield Elementary...and he has a wife and three kids. And the writers just never realised how gross this actually is, cause they said this grown woman conceived 3 kids with someone who, even according to him, can pass as a ten year old.

    The writers definitely run the gambit of putting Bart in the same situation it doesn't help when they continuously get a big celebrity to voice the character hes crushing on which I think immediately deflates any interest cause A: we know its not gonna work out for him, B: The character is unlikely to be seen again and C: the show has to stick to the status quo, I think the early seasons knew the best way to deal with it was making them lessons for Bart since they had wide spread of scenarios to put the characters through but the writers have him running circles where he learns nothing in newer episodes especially making it his fault when character wise hes just a kid can only be used as an excuse so often.

    The Bart romance episodes are my go-to example of how The Simpsons has suffered from continuing too long and reusing the same plot concepts too many times. It's not only very unrealistic but outright disturbing that 10-year-old would have had this many romantic relationships. The first couple ones had the charm of being innocent yet momentous coming-of-age stories ("when Bart fell in love for the first time", "when Bart had his very first girlfriend") but after that it's just diminishing returns. The nth time Bart fell in love is automatically going to be a lot less charming than the first time so they have to jump the shark with some weird and far-fetched plot that doesn't fit a character of his age at all (An already sexually active teenage girl has a relationship with Bart and wants to marry him even after finding out his real age? Had they done the same story with Lisa and a teenage boy, The Simpsons would have likely been instantly cancelled).
    I'll add that I don't really want the central child characters in The Simpsons to have regular girlfriends or boyfriends so as long as they'll keep doing these romantic stories with Bart and Lisa anyway I think every relationship should always be terminated by the end of the episode, one way or the other (I guess this is something that the Bart episodes at least technically do better than some of the Lisa ones).

    I feel like the deception angle comes from what is I think one of the strongest elements of Bart's character when it's used properly: his low self esteem. Early seasons made good use of the fact that Bart knows he's a screw up. He isn't smart or talented, so acting out is his way of getting attention. He doesn't try because he is convinced that he'll fail (whether or not he's right kind of depends on the episode). Some of the best Bart moments are the ones that reveal that he really is a good kid who does bad things because he feels like what he has to do to fit in, or because his natural impulsivity is stronger than his good nature. In the Jenny episode I think he really just doesn't believe she or any girl would want to be with him unless he pretends to be someone else. It'd be nice if the show gave him a successful relationship that could help him learn the things about himself that make him worth it.

    I think the problem is two fold, and both on the writers. I think it depends on the writers, but they don't know how much of a 10 year old they want to make him. He either doesn't get what love is, or he's just in a relationship he's just immature enough for. The other problem being they want to write Bart as more of a loser as time goes on, rather than the overly popular kid that gets along with everybody that he started off as. And they REALLY love making him a loser in the flash forward episodes. I hate that. Even with Lisa's Wedding, he gets a blue collar job, but a blue collar job he absolutely loves. Screw the episode where he's a failure in a band with Ralph. Jeez. Not even Milhouse. Ralph.

      Yeah, much of this stems from the writers.

    I find the Shauna episode deeply uncomfortable, she is meant to be 12-14 and she flashes a 10 year old. Bart is visibly shaken in the next scene but then their relationship just continues? Boys who experience sexual assault aren’t taken seriously

      @@ivannasophiamansilla5601 Its also fairly realistic. These kind of romantic shenanigans are common among minors who don't know any better yet are striving for more mature sexuality. I don't think the audience was supposed to approve or condemn, but simply understand and relate.

      @@jasonseipler2665No. It's never, ever okay for a teenager to purposefully flash a child. He was not only unable to consent as a child, but also because she had isolated him was using it to manipulate him, with the latent threat of physical violence from his bully. It's messed up.

    I'm one of the few people who really hated Holidays of Future Passed (and thus by extension Days of Future Future). A big part of that was that Bart and Jenda breaking up at the end of Future Drama is ultimately a noble thing he does for himself and for Lisa, and both subsequent episodes undo that by getting Bart and Jenda back together and making them miserable together (I similarly hate them for putting Lisa and Milhouse together, which I feel is clearly the worst outcome for Lisa). I try not to be the old fan who complains about newer Simpsons, but I rarely felt the writers were as creatively bankrupt as when they treated the future episodes as canon to follow for subsequent episodes. The writers don't care that much about about past continuity (and they shouldn't necessarily have to); why care about it for future stories!?

    I mean I'd say give him a break, he's 10. But also, the amount of women this kid has seemingly dated all within the span of one year, while being 10, is kind of concerning.

    I actually agree but a major problem with your conclusion is that you are looking at it from the narrative to writers put out instead of the bigger picture. A few of these girls weren’t innocent victims in fact a lot of times it was the other way around.
    Shauna molested bart plain and simple there is no argument she had all the power in that relationship the same with darcy there is nothing sympathetic about these girls and the fact that not only did the writers present them as victims but bart and the one in the wrong and who needs to be punished. Darcy’s cameo in Moonshine River says more about her then her entire episode bart was meal ticket and the moment he didn’t give her what she wanted it was drop dead.
    People taking Love Is a Many-Splintered Thing at face value is a real pet peeve of mine. I actually compare it to The Haw-Hawed Couple. Bart is forced to be friends with nelson by marge. The underlining joke is that this is an abusive relationships with the shout outs to goodfellas and brokeback mountain with nelson taking the role of henry and bart the role of Karen. When bart is told that is subservient to nelson he doesn’t want that type of relationship. nelson does after bart wants nothing to do nelson so nelson accuses him of being being a bad friend. Every single one of nelsons actions is text book abusive behavior yet he is the one you are supposed to sympathize with.
    It’s the same thing with mary only replace marge with lisa and physical abuse with emotional. Taken at face value everything you said is correct. He was too busy playing video games instead of spending time and bonding with her. She broke up with him bcuz Mary felt like she was nothing to Bart because he kept ignoring her.
    The problem is that the episode its self states that bart was only playing video games for 30 minutes during which she did nothing but moan and complain and for the rest of the episode he did try to spend time with her. they listened to her parent play music for hours and afterwards she wanted to play music some more. all bart did was pet a her dog that came up to him he didn't complain he didn't ignore her, he didn't stop listening he just pet pet the dog.
    if it was an equal thing with her being obsessed with music and him being obsessed with video games i wouldn’t complained but she treated bart like an in animate object giving literally impossible standards yet not budging a millimeter. the catalyst for them breaking up was after once again spending all day listening and playing music she wanted so go off and basically flirt with a guy only for bart to go can we do something else besides this. They did the same thing they did with darcy playing up barts idiocy and using that as an excuse to justify her behavior him not being able to articulate encouragement isn’t the end of the world. it also didn’t go from the dog to the concert there was a montage of bart doing everything she wanted. it was a completely one sided all take no give relationship.
    she Was too busy playing music instead of spending time and bonding with him. She broke Up with him bcuz bart wasn't a potted plant with eyes who would just sit in the corner as she did her thing and only speak when when spoken to. those are impossible standards that no one could meet. bart wanted a relationship she wanted a stuffed animal
    Modern bart has become less of a character and more a composite of traits stolen from other shows. We have the designated monkey dysfunctional lightning rod but unlike meg, butters, orel bart is more like timmy turner punished for having the audacity to react negatively to his lot in life or try to subvert it.
    You know what the sad thing is Pretty Whittle Liar was the perfect opportunity to bring mary back and explain her behavior instead they have lisa who is so insecure it is pretty much canon that bart can’t be successful as long as she is in his life and merge who’se response to lisa crippling bart was to not only blame him because it wouldn’t have happen if he wasn’t better then her but call him a sociopath for not feeling sorry for her give the Aesop.
    Bart is surrounded by people who constantly belittle him and he is a love martyr willing to except fault and sacrifice himself at a moments notice because of those self same people. He needs someone who will build him up that’s why my favorite is jenny she seems to be the only who made him a better person. I don’t blame her for leaving him as he did lie to her but it sad that her only role seems to be a satellite love interest.
