    So many videos advocate the "thumbs forward" grip. I've never been able to get used to that and instead I use a thumb over thumb grip that wraps and locks both hands around the whole pistol, front and back. To me it's the best grip for control. It's also my grip for a revolver, so I have one grip for all guns, pistols and revolvers. It was so satisfying to see none other than Hickok has the same (at least very similar) grip. I believe Paul Harrell, too, and Bill Wilson, as well. I conclude that one's pistol grip should follow general, tried-and-true guidelines, but in the end each shooter's grip must be fine tuned to one's own anatomy, strength and subjective feel. In other words, as in most things, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Hickok, I can't shoot like you, but if anybody asks me why I don't shoot thumbs forward I'm going to say, have you seen Hickok's grip? Thanks!

    My best friend has been shooting longer that I. Thanks to this video, once I saw his shots pulling low left, I asked him to show me how he was positioning his left hand. Sure enough, his left index finger was wrapped around the front of the trigger guard. I told him, "Hickok says if you wrap that finger around the front of the trigger guard, you're gonna pull low and left every time." He adjusted his grip and started nailing dead center. No dog is too old to learn new tricks.

      He states multiple times that the way he shoots isnt by the book and has varied things based on whats comfortable to him. He's not the kind of man thats going to follow something perfectly if he has a way that is better for him. If you cant go past base knowledge thats on you. Almost every video hes extremely modest and far from acting authoritative.

    With my personal history of shooting 357 & 44 mag revolvers, and now going to a Glock 20, I had evolved into my left thumb supporting my right wrist. I can see I will have to go thru hours of empty gun muscle memory RE-training on my grip. I do thank you for your clear explanation of what works for you, and why it works... but most important is not what to do, broken thumbs hurt!

    I just put my thumb where it's out of the way and feel natural. As long as you're not interfering with the slide operation, it shouldn't matter that much.

    I've been struggling for the proper grip on my 23 gen3 for a while. Couldn't get consistent groupings doing the both thumbs straight forward grip that a handful of youtubers seem to advocate in their videos. I'm eager to try your recommendation out on my next range trip. My stance may also need work. They say to lean in a little on the ball of your foot. Thanks as always for your excellent quality videos. You do a great service for Americans wanting to exercise their 2A rights. Stay safe.

    • @bry0ung
      @bry0ung 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +kandaraugh I agree. I just bought a g23 and can't quite get it right. But to be honest, I only shot pistols once as a scout many years ago. I'm a new pistol owner as of a month or so ago. Shooting with both thumbs pointing forward seems to place the pad of my dominant thumb right on the slide release, thus causing it to prevent the gun from locking after final round. If Hickok shoots this way and has the accuracy he has there must be more than one way to shoot... That being said, to each there own, next time I'll try overlapping the dominant thumb as he does in this video. By the way, has this helped your grouping? You placed this comment many months ago.

    • @nothingnewtome1
      @nothingnewtome1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kandaraugh you said yourself "my stance needs work" so it's probably not the thumbs forward grip that's messing you up. Fix the other inconsistencies before you plan your (proper) thumbs forward grip. Thumbs forward is correct. The stuff this guy is teaching is straight out of 1970s po-dunk small town police department training.

    Hickok, I just want to thank you for introducing me to the Talon Grips this past summer. I purchased a G27 (which I LOVE) for EDC and immediately got a talon grip, it being a smaller gun and all. I love it. It rubbed my side raw a little bit, but I sanded it down and have gotten used to it. You're right about one-handed shooting being a breeze. The grip is small (good for Glock's big grips) yet provideds a lot of friction which is perfect. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us all!

    • @nothingnewtome1
      @nothingnewtome1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Open both eyes and focus on the front sight. Also dry fire a lot. Pick a spot on the wall and draw without focusing on your sights. Then once your fully extended check your sights and see where you are. Make adjustments until you are consistently lined up on target. That's why avoiding inconsistencies like having on arm bent is important.

    The voice drop-outs are due to the automatic gain control on the camera dropping the gain on the mic all the way down whenever he shoots (very loud, of course), but not bringing it back up quickly enough when the shooting stops and he continues talking (much quieter). Lapel mic would only help if you mixed the sound manually after the fact or it had faster-acting gain control.

    @CRB7172 , Well, you want your front sight to be clear if possible, so whatever glasses do that best for you, I'd think. I was just reading an article in "Handgunner" by MIke Venturino in which he mentions going to the eye doctor and taking a 1911 with him. He wanted glasses that made the sights look clear. Nice to see a TH-camr using a modified Weaver...seems that most on here are using the isosceles. Spent a quarter century as a LEO, and we were always trained to use the modified Weaver when shooting two-handed. One area of my training that differs from your technique is that we were always trained to place the index finger of our weak hand on the front of the knurled trigger guard when shooting two-handed. Wow, you can really lock that pistol in with that grip for great control and accuracy.

    Howdy hickok45, your points made about grip and handling of the gun seem right on, though I'm not at all a shooter myself. Though a completely different craft, you will find it compelling the similarities in piano playing. Some schools of piano actually go deep into the biology of it even - showing that even your hips are involved in the craft. One concept you may too find interesting is "awareness through motion/movement (ATM)" where one develops self-awareness of the body. Powerful stuff.

    I agree with "both eyes" for reflex sights/red dot sights. However, to my understanding, many people are starting to teach to keep both eyes open, even if you're using iron sights (telescopic sights are exempt for obvious reasons). This is because it brings in more depth perception and more hand eye coordination for when you don't have time to "be perfect". I've found it's more comfortable to keep both eyes open at any rate, rather than having to squeeze one eye shut. Still, to each his own :)

    Thanks for the advice. I have a 27 and I found myself placing my weak side index finger in front of the trigger guard as well , pulling the pistol back into my strong hand grip. Back to the range. Practice , practice , practice.

    Lots of people say that. It might be great in terms of using your right hand only for trigger control. In a fight, where people are trying to kick the gun out of your hand, or knock it out with a lug wrench or grab it, you should have the most secure grip possible. I agree with this video that your shooting hand should be holding on tight in a fight. There are certain guns that I am comfortable shooting with high thumbs, like the 1911, but I control the recoil better with thumbs locked down.

    Thanks, Hickok, once again for another informative and entertaining video. I now own a Glock 30, in case I hadn't mentioned, and having shot it, I absolutely love it!
    I'm now working on my grip and getting my targeting honed a bit better. Even did a vid of it! Now all I need to do is figure out a place where I can shoot without a range fee. Bullets are already expensive enough!
    Thanks again!

    I shoot well with my finger on the front of the triggergaurd, its just a matter of learning not to flinch or press it in any direction while shooting, but its a bit harder. Because it is easier to push the gun left or right when you have the extra leverage in the front of the fingergaurd, but it helps recoil because of that same leverage over the gun.

    @eastofakron1 , A Sig, M&P, Springfield, etc. would work fine. You might want something different, though, just for kicks and variety. Maybe a nice revolver you like, or maybe a 1911. AFter all, it's the 100th anniversary coming up, so maybe a 1911?

    Great videos. Really tells me a lot I didn't understand about firearms! Despite what you'd be lead to believe, the average American hasn't used any firearms of real merit. Thanks!

    @Hickok45 I also wanted to mention that in the Olympics and in many sports, they train in a similar way as the aforementioned ATM, where an athlete literally and intensely visualizes every single movement and action in the mind, yet not physically doing it, as an advanced form of training. In short, it boils down to the harmony of mind and body (muscle, nerves, tendons and bones), where you train your brain to build neurological associations/connections with various muscular functions.

    Thanks for the heads-up on NOT putting one's weak hand index finger on the trigger guard. I've seen it suggested as a possible option in another video.

    A weak mag spring is very possible or a small possibility that the notch is not cut cleanly from the factory- you could look close at it. Also with a new gun the recoil spring may simply be very firm at first and it's likely that the slide would not travel all the way back due to the combination of a stiff recoil spring and the gun being lighter after the last shot because there are no more rounds in the gun of course. Heavier the gun-the easier the slide goes back. Be sure to hold it firmly too
