  • The four basic rules of gun safety. There are many more specific issues related to gun safety; however, these four, mostly borrowed from Jeff Cooper, distill it down to the essentials.
    1. All Guns are always loaded. [Treat them that way]
    2. Never let the muzzle cover [sweep] anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
    4. Be sure of your target. [And what's behind it]

We were 15 yrs old and were being stupid at my friend's older sister's apartment. Her live-in boyfriend had a .308 in the closet. My friend took it out, cocked it and *BANG!!!* That was the loudest sound I've ever heard. Idiot shot the upper wall through the upstairs neighbor's floor. Fortunately no one got hurt! I still think about that day from time to time and still, 23 yrs later, it still scares me to think about how much more different that whole incident could have gone.

These acronyms are what's taught in Canada:
    ACTS:
    -Assume every firearm is loaded
-Control the muzzle direction at all times
-Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard
-See that the firearm is unloaded
    PROVE (It's safe):
-Point the firearm in the safest available direction
    -Remove all ammunition
    -Observe the chamber
    -Verify the feeding path
-Examine the bore each time you pick up a firearm

A bit late, but if someone is going to start shooting (as in the first time), give them BBs first. If they can't act safely with BBs, they probably aren't ready for live ammo.
Not my actual quote or my idea, of course; just saw this before somewhere and I think it's a great suggestion.

I start my friends little boys at 5 with a Daisy Red Ryder bb gun. At 6 they get a CO2 bb pistol. She's got 4 little boys. At 8 years old I took her oldest to the gun range. The RSO was very impressed with his gun safety and basic marksmanship with a Glock 42 and a .22lr SAA revolver. Said he's better than most adults. Then I looked up and realized how many bullet holes were in the ceiling

I learned in trucking safety courses that the most dangerous time for a trucker safety wise is on average 7 months in, when they are feeling very confident in their abilities. They get lax, and statistics show that accidents spike in that time frame of experience.
There are other spikes too, but I can't remember the exact stats. Something like 3 years in, then 10 years... etc.
I don't know how transferable these stats are to gun experience, but it's always good to know that constant reminders about safety never become obsolete, and in fact are essential, even for the most experienced person.

In the Army we were taught to aim down, we called it Low-Ready since a negligent discharge in the air could potentially go for miles and still hit an unintended target like (god forbid) an innocent person.

    • @Homesickfobbit

    • @LucidDream
      @LucidDream 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+zachary thorneycroft Yeah, that's a good piece of advice for sure. If you want to target practice, a good idea is to have the targets set with their backs to a hill/mountain. I live in Tennessee, like Hickok, and most of the outdoor ranges I've been to use this idea. So you know for sure they are just going into the ground once they penetrate your target. I strongly recommend to also know what to do when your weapon misfires or hang fires. I'm sure plenty of people have either gotten hurt or died because of one of these mishaps. A misfire is when you pull the trigger and you just hear a click. If that were to happen, you keep you gun pointed in a safe direction...no questions. Keep it pointed safely for 10 seconds...but I highly recommend 30 seconds. (If you value safety...which you should.) If nothing else happens, it was indeed a misfire. But if it goes off, then it is called a hang fire. It is very possible that this can happen. I think it's usually from the powder lighting slowly and the gas slowly expanding. Lots of people might try to check it, if they just hear a click. Then find out it was a hang fire and it goes off in their face. So that's why you keep it pointed safely away. There is also a squib load, but that doesn't happen as often I'd say. Usually a problem with bad reloading of ammunition powder. I just watched a video where some dude almost blew his head off with a shotgun, because it didn't fire and he looked down the barrel. Then it went off and blew his hat off...very, very lucky that guy.

A few years ago, very good friends of my family went to visit their grandparents (a little family meeting). While the grownups were in the living room chatting, the kids(13-16yo) were sitting in the balcony. One of them went inside and came back with the old shotgun of the grandfather that was hanging on a wall, aimed at one of the girls face to scare them and pulled the trigger. This little "joke" became a HUGE family tragedy. I knew her since she was born;her mother needed 2 years to recover.

This year I witnessed a revolver discharge two tables away from me in a crowded gun show and a friends 30-06 discharge as we were walking back down a game trail. (luckily I was walking behind on the way back) The salesman said he didn't think the gun was loaded and my friend said he thought the safety was on and that his finger wasn't on the trigger. Both of these events have made my heart race, my ears ring, and have made me very cautious around anybody anymore.

Thoughtful and informative as always. My grandfather taught me these when I was a boy. I was also trained if you have a click without firing, wait with it pointed downrange for 15 seconds just in case of a delayed fire due to a bad primer. Always safe the gun before putting it up, and always check even a gun handed to you before doing anything with it. Even if the person checked in front of you, still do it yourself to get in the habit. Wonderful public service video.

I use these safety videos to train any new shooter prior to having them at the range touch a firearm. I try to watch them again before I am about to show a new shooter. I tend to start new shooters out firing my Single Six buntline 22 LR, then my Sig 1911-22 LR before I go to a 38 special revolver or a 9 in a gentle load for a semiautomatic. I would not push a person to fire a caliber too big for their skill level. These videos I believe in and are worth saving to help new folks considering to buying their first firearm. They are that good.

The more you practice gun safety, the better. I have been handling guns for many years, and I still revisit this video at least a couple times a year. It's very easy to get too comfortable around firearms, so drill the four basic rules into your head.
    1) The gun is always loaded. (even when you know it isn't.)
    2) Never point the muzzle at anything you don't intend to destroy.
    3) Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
    4) Know your target and what's beyond it.
Practice these rules diligently and you won't experience "a click when you expect a bang, or a bang when you expect a click." Gun safety is paramount.

@sandelpop , As I've mentioned in my videos until people are tired of hearing it, that's why you load five in a traditional single action. Keep the chamber under the hammer empty, unless maybe you are on the range and already pointing the gun at targets you're going to shoot. I try to always do it just to keep it a habit.

Excellent safety video. I started shooting at age FOUR--and that's a terrific time to really put the idea of safety into a kid's head (not that I was allowed alone with a loaded gun at that age!). Gun safety has been the primary theme when I handle guns ever since.
There really ought to be a FIFTH rule to the famous four: You're RESPONSIBLE for your guns when you store them. Guns must be stored in a way so that innocent or unaware people can't get in trouble with them EVEN IF YOU AREN'T AROUND.

Gun safety to me is the MOST IMPORTANT thing about owning and shooting guns. To me if a person can not be safe with a firearm that person is just as DANGEROUS as the criminal that is trying to kill you. I carry every day, and my Glock is tossed and handled and taken off all day, so I carry the gun with an empty chamber, AND!! I have caught a lot of Hell because I choose to carry an empty chamber, but it works for me and how I carry.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Unless somebody is attacked pretty frequently, at least occasionally, he doesn't really KNOW how well his carry system works. Just saying. All MY carry guns and carry methods for the last 30 years have worked great. Only problem is, I've never been really tested. :-) That said, though, a person has to do what makes the best sense for himself. You are correct, Safety comes first before everything else.

NCLUSA I worked in a department where some of our older officers weren't too happy when we moved from revolvers to semi-autos. Some of those guys just would not carry with a loaded chamber. Long story longer, we hired a private contractor to handle our in-service qualifications and to train our tactical team. We went from standing quietly shooting holes in paper targets to high speed, high stress combat shooting. We soon found that when under stress all kinds of crazy stuff happens. After getting completely overwhelmed by extensive cardiovascular exercise combined with a few flash-bangs and a shoot/don't shoot scenario guys were drawing their weapons and dumping mags instead of racking slides, or racking slides when one was already chambered, etc.
When you have a second or two to make a lethal force decision while under stress, the last thing you want to do is figure out if your weapon is ready. It became clear pretty fast that you need to train like you fight. Drawing, aquiring your target, and engaging are hard enough without loading your gun first. I'm not trying to break your balls at all, but if you aren't comfortable carrying a semi that's ready to shoot, you should carry a double action revolver instead. Either that or train like hell with your method. But train while you out of breath and while you're being messed with.

    • @NCLUSA
      @NCLUSA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Wicked Coolname Thank you for your reply. Like I said in my comment that if I were a cop/military that I would carry the gun hot, but I'm not. I understand what you are saying and I agree, but I see no need for me working out on my farm to have the gun with a chambered round. I keep my gun with me most of the time (not on me) I have a tool belt on so carrying the gun would get in my way of working. Thanks again for your long comment, it was well worth reading (:

We were on a firing range and someone went and changed targets.
A person who was shooting wanted to look through his scope at one of the targets which was being removed.
Before looking through his scope he made sure the magazine was empty and ejected. He made sure there was nothing in the chamber by working the action four times. He looked through his scope at one of the targets being removed.
He never pointed at the person removing the targets but was this a major violation here? Remember he made sure gun was completely empty.

Three rules handed down to me from my Father.
    1. Assume very gun is loaded.
    2. Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction.
    3. Know your backstop.
you can add a lot of words to that but, you can not make it any safer or any more to
    the point.

One of the most knowledgeable and relaxed presenters on TH-cam...Only suggestion I would make now is to make insert closeups when you describe in detail, static rather than handheld. That allows us to stop the video, see the detail sharply, and then move on with the playback. Otherwise, LOVE your commentary!!!

Excellent video. Treat every gun as a loaded gun. Whenever you pick up a gun the first thing must be to check it's not already loaded. Always point your gun in a safe direction, as if you are sweeping a deadly laser beam around (a very useful way to think of it), and never point it at something/someone you don't intend to destroy. Never put down a loaded gun and always be aware of where your shots are going as they fall back down

I always worry about dangerous things I don't know how to keep under control or safe towards me or others. Like a car or a gun. Safe driving I've mastered and sport shooting I want to try but was clueless about safety.

I think the phrase should be: "The two loudest sounds is when you hear a bang and expect a click and when you hear a click when you expect a bang." The last part of being loud should be the clue. That the smallest unexpected sound should scream at you for not being in control.

Just wanted to say thanks for making this video. I grew up with guns; most of my family has them, many of my friends do, I've put hundreds of rounds through other people's guns, but until recently have never owned one myself. My wife on the other hand, has never shot a gun and was terrified by the thought of one being in the house (there's some extra feelings there as well which, to be honest, I think justify her feelings). We've talked about it before but until last weekend it never went beyond the theoretical. Then the shooting in Kalamazoo, where we live, happened. We had a long talk about it and I purchased a Sig Sauer P250. She and I sat down last night and I showed her the gun, took it apart, explained how it works and answered all of her questions. My primary focus with doing so was safety. As someone who grew up with guns, having shot them often, and having a healthy respect for them, a lot of what I told her was very similar to this video. However, it has been a while since I've shot so this video served as not only a reinforcement of what I was saying to her, but a good reminder for me as well. Between me and this video, while she is still a bit reluctant, she is much more comfortable with it being in the house. Next weekend we are going to go to a range not far from home and she is going to work with an instructor to learn more about guns and how to shoot. Between now and then though, she and I will be going through some of your videos on shooting tips and safety. To me it's mostly stuff I already know and is just reminders, but to her a lot of it is new. So yeah, just wanted to say thanks for doing what you do.

Great instruction Hickok, things like this can never be covered enough. I've always said, if you show someone the wrong way to do something, they will always do it wrong no matter how you try to put it right. If you show them how to do it right first time, they will do it right for ever. I have my own extra rule, it would be rule 5. "Act responsibly, and encourage others to do the same". I'm sure your rule 4 covered what is beyond your target, should the bullet pass through.

The "LOOK" inside the action is a 100% must! I have been shooting for 20+ years and on multiple occasions have witnessed a round not being ejected. This happens many of times with a 22 lr. I have a Volquartsen 10/22 ultralight and on several occasions even racking the action will not eject the round due to the dirty nature of a 22 in a semi auto. So many people dont understand that bad habbits are very hard to break and one must always be 100% safe all the time even when shooting alone.

Shooting and owning a gun is a huge responsibility. If it interests you, then do all you can to learn about the safety of weapons. Maybe even take a class later on. Ask your parents about it and show them you can be responsible. And you just may get that gun you want.

Great video. I'm just getting started with shooting (only a bb gun for now!) but I want to start with good safety habits even though it's "just" a bb gun. I agree absolutely about "going overboard" with safety. In the absence of 100% certainty of a safe condition, simply assume the worst possible condition. Stamp out ALL uncertainty as to safety, and replace it with certainty. These habits are so simple, and can help us all enjoy our guns safely.
    Awesome!

People think I am not safe what so ever because I'm young... They don't realize that I'm obsessed with gun safety and this video pretty much nailed everything I do when it comes to gun safety. I will admit that the whole 'laser' thing mentioned by this guy is sorta iffy for me... I have a hard time figuring out where to point when I'm in a group of people around me and I gotta put the gun down or something. But I check at least four times that there is nothing in the chamber, and the mag is out

Canadian firearms safety course we have the vital four ACTS:
    Assume every firearm is loaded.
Control muzzle direction at all times.
Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard. (until ready to fire)
See that the firearm is safe, PROVE it!
    And PROVE stands for:
Point the firearm in the safest available direction
    Remove all ammo.
    Observe the chamber.
Verify the feeding path is clear.
Examine the bore for obstructions or excess lubricant.

If you always treat a firearms as in a loaded condition, then the safety drills become a natural action that you carry out automatically, like muscle memory for the brain. Repetition is the key to learning anything, and by always treating a firearms as loaded the safety procedure becomes second nature. It is far better to check every time you handle the firearm and find it empty, than to find out too late that it is loaded and someone has been injured or killed.

I have actually had a 22 lr round ricochet of an oak tree while squirel hunting and it clipped high on my left shoulder. It did not have enough energy left to do anything but hearing that bullet whistling towards me and having it hit me was an eye opener. Bullets can react oddly to targets and every safety measure is needed to prevent random occurrences. The only way that I know to prevent this from happening again is to quit shooting my 22 lr towards trees. I use my .410 shotgun for squirrels now.
