- Jaguar XK-E. Jay owns more than a few Jaguars, but this XKE is truly one of kind. One day several years ago, Jay's buddy and the expert restorer behind XKs Unlimited, Jason Len paid a visit to Big Dog Garage.

This is probably the best looking E-type I've ever seen. This is my favourite car in Jays garage.
this admitted even Enzo Ferrari himself!
Jay Leno is just such a likable guy. It is the cars like this Jag that brings me to this channel, and then Jay delivers his deep appreciation for them. A very enjoyable ten minutes.
Jay Leno is the ultimate car guy. He has the best collection of cars and motorcycles of all time. I will always be his biggest fan when it comes to his car collection.
Love how Jay dumps the clutch and smokes 'em up at the end! I never realized how strong that V 12 was. By then, the car was too big and heavy. This is truly the best of both worlds.
"The best looking and most elegant roadster ever" admitted even Enzo Ferrari: this is a guarantee for true class!
Crap stance hasn't aged well
@@jameshill3587 : "Crap stance" ???
The best part is that anyone could afford one before their retirement
I used to sell these cars....as new. I agree, the sixties were a golden age for sportscars, and this certainly is one of the best...better than new. Boy, does my heart race and my blood pressure spike when I watch and LISTEN to this car ! It just doesn't get any better. You really get a visceral sense of what this was all about ! Wow !
Jay leno"s Garage is the best show on TH-cam No other show comes close to the amount of content that he puts out with each one of his episodes. Its not just about the cars, its also about the amazing people that are behind the making of these works of art and amazing machinery, and the history of it all, and he grasps each and everyone of those points every time. Great Series Jay, keep up the Great work. I just wanted to let you know all of us enjoy your work and this hobby, thanks for sharing!
This blog seems to be a labor of love. I don't recall any ads on any of Jay's videos. Thank you Jay for all your hard work. It means a lot to all us car lovers.
This red Jaguar is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen!
+michael mottlau Not really a car guy, but the E-type is the only car I have ever coveted
+michael mottlau Oh yeah!
XKE is the most beautiful car of all time to me BUT I want different colors LOL
NAME A BETTER ONE
Maybe English Racing Green
I saw Jay driving this car yesterday on Coldwater Canyon. I was in a traffic jam going up towards Mulholland he can came zipping down
and I did not get a chance to wave to him.
It's not just you! I'm 16 and I love the way this car looks!
Watching this after 10 years I have to admit that Jay is absolutely right when saying that the most beautyiful sport cars ever were designed in the 50s and 60s!
That car is a drop dead gorgeous work of art, absolutely beautiful.
Thanks for showing it to us Jay Leno
I've seen a lot of Jay's car videos. This is one of the few that makes me really want the car. This is close to what the factory V12 should have looked like.
Somehow I missed this episode. That is absolutely gorgeous.
My dad bought my mom a brand new one in 1970....what sexy machine....he sold it in 1990 to a gentleman in England was shipping it back for a complete restore....it needed badly.....on time I saw my Dad cry when it was being loaded on the flat bed...besides the time he got his hand caught in the log splitter....he turned every color of the rainbow and I learned every swear word in English Austrian band Polish...boy I miss him
Where does Jay go that other big-time collectors do not go? = He drives the crap out of them. It is a joy to watch him have his joy...................... Carry-on Mr. Leno.
It's funny how curvy cars have made a big comeback- I never did like the angular designs of the 70's and 80's that much. E types, MGA's , TR4's, early Jensons all look fabulous- Lots of the motor cycles look brilliant from that era as well. Great video.
The E-Type body style is one of the best representations of the 60's sports car. Both the hard tops and convertables were stunning then and stunning now.
When Jay talks cars there is not much that he says with which I disagree. This video is no exception. I love vehicles of that era.
one of the best looking cars I have ever seen!
The E-Type roadster was the stuff of daydreams and reverie in my youth. What a beauty!
Never were truer words spoken on sports cars then and now.
I love your Jags. I had a XJS 12 cylinder. I think some chrome exhaust tips would look good on your Red XKE, (2 into 4) When I was in High School (‘63-‘66) I had access to my Fathers’1964 MG-B. We modified it heavily. Stroked and bored it, 30’ over, a cam, duel Weber’s and a completely new exhaust (header and 4 into 2). It had a Roll Bar and 4 point safety harness.. In those years this MG won in its class at LeMans. I was so proud to be driving a real racing car that was featured in ‘Car & Driver’. My car was a Canary Yellow ‘55 Chevy. I sold it, and inherited the MG to go to College. I drove it around ‘The City’ during “The Summer of Love” (1967). Keep up the great work. I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoy your show. I was watching one of your ‘Tonight Shows’ (1987) when you had Roy Orbison & KD Lang was on. The guy playing ‘back-up’ (acoustic guitar) on “Crying” was my lead guitar in ‘my ‘ band “Sanpaku” (20 yrs before). Thanks for all the great cars. Mr.Leno
You're killing me, Jay. That's got to be one of the world's best cars you're driving there.
I've owned 5 Jaguars. Everything in this video took my breath away. Every word out of Leno's mouth was "telling my whole life..." Thank you, Roberta Flack.
Thank you Jay Leno.
What a wonderful combination of a 12 and a 6! Very, very sexy. Red was always my favorite on these timeless lines since I was 8 years old. I am a big fan of keeping older cars like this stock but this work of art is a wonderful exception!
She still looks as beautiful as ever Jay - I was a mechanic working on these icons in the mid 60s, you are totally correct, they don't make 'em like that anymore. I had a hand in restoring 3 x 1953 London double decker buses in USA a few years back, we hauled them from San Diego to Oregon and managed to restore two of them before repatriating them all back to UK - maybe we should have offered one to you ?
I saw my first E type as a 9 yr old in Glasgow one day I was gobsmacked when I saw it driving past , ever since then I have loved everything about them , one day I will get one, one day,
I love that word, "gobsmacked".
badreality2 We say it often in the UK,
Do you have one yet?
I don't know how I missed this years ago. I love it!!
Arguably, the XK-E is one of the sexiest cars ever produced.
Agreed, however the 120 beats it !
No the 120 does not beat it.
Both are classy pieces of bodywork. Very different cars, different eras. Take your pick
I cold certainly argue about that
Walter Palmer i think the tires looks very and to much thin seeing it from the front.
Used to know a fella who said the oil level got too low in his 12, and he did some damage, still had oil pressure but it may be that oil cooling may have played a part in these engines and that it was imperative to keep it at the right level. Found an old brochure from a dealer in '72, said "some people think a Jag is dear to service, but our mechanics charge $7 an hour" [this is in OZ]. This fella junked the 12, too expensive to repair and he had a 350 Chevy engine fitted instead. This was a common rebuild, one mechanic made it his speciality to convert.
Cool
john brown That's like carving off your left nut and replacing it with a conker
Justin Daley Might do some good for the weight distribution, and it allows someone who is cash strapped but wants to drive a Jag without burning a hole in their pocket.
john brown and you'd be left with a lemon, worse still, one that you created. I just couldn't do it, but since I'm English I'm perhaps a little overprotective!
Justin Daley Fair enough answer, however i am not sure about the resale value of these cars and a lot would depend upon overall condition i.e. looking "tired" would not help, and I don't know about the rust from England's salted roads.
I drove a V12 '74 E type in that shade of red on our wedding day.
It will probably be the most exotic car I ever drive!
The guy that modified that Jag was an artist. That is by far the best looking XKE I have seen. Perfect proportions. Plus the V12.
Jay Leno's Garage is Americas TopGear! GREAT SHOW Jay!
I was around 8 years old, my brother and I were were walking down the street near my grandfather's Taylor shop and we walked by a Jaguar dealer. When I looked in the window and my jaw Dropped! There was an V-12 XKE! It was the most beautiful thing that I had ever seen! I think that was the day that I became a Car Freak! !!!
The jaguar XKE was certainly one of the best sports cars made back in the day, and this very customized XKE is nice.
Now you made me go to my garage to uncover my S1.5 and just admire it... Thanks
The fact that he lit the tires on a car like that is priceless. Too many are never like they were intended.
We feel nervous for you, Jay, driving in everyday traffic, where some other drivers may be inattentive. Donald Turnipseed didn't see James Dean and his mechanic approaching, because Porsche Spyder was little and low and a hedge obscured his vision. I've been driving little, low sportscars since 1948 and always expect the unexpected. People don't look both ways twice before pulling out , as professional drivers suggest. You are a much-beloved celebrity and America's best known car guy and top comedian. Happy motoring. You set a good example and thanks for sharing.
i think this is the perfect e type jag, like he said, the series 3 doesnt look as good as the series 1. very well done. gotta love the front and rear lights of the series 1
You know you did a great job if Jay Leno is chasing you around to buy your car!
I live across the road from XKs Unlimited. The shop is always busy. people send them cars from all over the world. I love to drive by just to look at all of the beautifully restored cars.
My Dad had a very good and close
friend, who was a pro working JAG's of all" Breeds". When he would go visit I got to go with him and watch them work on the cars.
I'm born in 1995 and I agree: Old sportscar are way better looking!
The only way most of us guys will ever come close to experience the cars of our dreams is at Jay Leno's garage. Thanks so much for sharing your fabulous cars Jay.
That's what a Jaguar is supposed to be like! I only wish I had done over the V12 like this one in my XJ12L I owned years ago.
Just beautiful. What a gem!
Nice project! The E-Type is and always was my favorite auto shape, you have recovered some of the proportons from the 6 cyl models with the more powerfu V-12 motor and updated brakes, electrics etc... It is a super car now.
This is truly an amazing modification to a truly beautiful car! Who would of thunk it could become even more beautiful!!! I've always had a fondness for the era of Jaguars!
To me this is the most Beautiful Car ever built, absolutely a work of art, this is the Mona Lisa of Automobiles!!!
Leno is a king, literally, kings will envy him for living the life he wants...
Jags from this period are just suited to the Pirelli Cinturato. 185VR16 for the XK120, XK140 & XK150. The E types are best on 185Vr15 Cinturato CA67, even if they are upgraded. When they fitted powersteering to the series 2 they fitted 205/70VR15 tyres and Pirelli now make a 205/70VR15 CN12 which is a 1971 tyre and perfect for the V12 XKE, XJS, XJ6 and for people that like a wider tyre on an earlier XKE
easily one of - if not THE prettiest car of all time! My childhood dream machine! ... and what a sound!!!
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. :)
You're right Jay, I use to read the car magazines and dream of owning one of those cars. I'm old now having own a Lancia Beta Coupe red. It was the best handling car I've ever driven. My present and probably last car is an Audi TT 1.8 liter with a 5-speed.
I saw Jay cruisin in this Jag a month ago in LA. Hell yeah, now I found the video to this car.
It doesn't get better than this!
Absolutely beautiful. Toggle switches would be nice. Given the fact that this video is a few years old, perhaps you've already gotten around to installing a new "older style" panel by now and might be willing to show us how great it looks and functions in a new video of this stunning car.
And the million dollar question is.....".why didn't Jaguar build them like this" as I find myself nodding approval at every modification done to this car to bring it's portions back to where they should be. It's exactly what Jaguar should have done instead of turning the V12 into a bloat mobile that wallowed. This is yet another of Jay Leons cars I have fallen in love with. I also greatly admire the efforts the modifier put in to realise this dream of how the XK E, or E Type as we call it here, should have developed. Ten out of Ten on this one !
Leno not Leon !.......autospell ...aargh
If only regulations hasn't interfered with the E design...
Yahoo! Loved Jay's V12 E type Jag roadster! The sound of that engine at full throttle definitely was a "visceral" thrill! Thanks!!
Pretty good looking car? It's BEAUTIFUL! XK-E roadsters always were a work of art.
The hidden one of a kind cars are the best-and what a beautiful car to spend that much time with.
I could watch J drive this Jag every week, wish I was having as much fun as he is!!
i have a 69 jaguar etype thats been modified in similar ways to this car But much more to my own taste. It is a short wheelbase 5.7 v12 with webers and a 6 speed gearbox. I would love to be able to compare the two cars together one day.
The first time I saw an XK-E,I may have drooled as my jaw was dropped.I've loved them from first sight.1980,was asked if $3500 for a 6-cyl convertible was reasonable for a garaged.I said YES,buy it.My Dad bought a'77 Cop-built Plymouth, that was a water dept. used instead. The Jag had less miles, but the Plymouth was American, and easier to get parts for.Now the Jag would sell for the price of a Challenger,
She's a beautiful! Looking good Jay. I recall seeing the first V-12s around Detroit. After getting off Summer traffic stalled expressways, they'd be parked along streets with the owners putting cold damp rags over the fuel lines to reduce perculation. Similarly, pilots of fuel injected Mooney aircraft had the same problem if they hadn't allowed engines to cool properly between flights. Cowlings were faired very closely and retained heat.
thanks for putting all the vids on youtube, really makes it easier to see these videos and man are they awesome, keep up the good work and thank you.
Jay, this is my all time favourite car, love XK-E with the V-12. I have to go to your garage some day
it's on my bucket list. Thank's for the great video, and greater memories.
Thank you for the video. It is always a treat to hear you talk about vehicles.
Absolutely fantastic, what a stunningly beautiful car. And, it has a V12!!
Love seeing these old videos... denim still ruled!!
This is one beautiful E- type.
Man, the 60s brought up so many stylish cars! Such a sweet looking small roadster!
jag e type is one of the best looking cars ever imo
I can't explain it either, but the "feeling" one gets from driving an older car (sports, muscle or otherwise) is much deeper than with a newer car. You feel more connected? Perhaps because the newer cars drive so well that you don't have to stay "in the car" as much. With an older vehicle, even one that is in fabulous shape as this one is, you still have to stay on top of things. Damn ! I told you I couldn't explain it. But, I get it !
Jaguar XKE was and still is my my favorite sports car.
I had an Interceptor - red Mk II - that I sold to a gentleman named Jensen. I think he was Swedish. Lovely car to sit in and cruise along the freeway.
Seems like every XKE he has looks better than the other. This has got to be the best.
Enzo Ferrari once described this as the world's most beautiful car, high praise from a man who knows more than a little about beautiful cars.
The current model of the Z-car, the Nissan 370Z is another car that is quite beautiful and has the qualities of these old-time sports cars, light weight, simplicity, good handling and a big torquey naturally aspirated engine.
Today's cars just aren't the same. Couldn't agree with you more Jay!
wow that is the best modified E Type ever...really love the mix of the early and late bodies...incredible amount of work. where did the guy who built it find the time to do it??
I doubt that guy had any problem finding the time... I'm pretty sure he works for Jay! Jay's shop is something to behold... and it's"just a hobby!!" ;^)
Oops, this guy has his own shop, working on English cars. I missed the first part of the video.
Jay thank you for showing your XKE. beautiful car . some day ill have one
Yeah I noticed that when it was cold too. When it warmed up and he got on it hard, it seemed to go away.
Probably one of the best looking and sounding (...and smelling!) cars of all time
I drove a series 1 in the 60's and boy did it scare me, Ive wanted one ever since (74 years old now) If I ever get one I will have it converted to run all electric with a Tesla motor and it'll be a car for and of the future.
That's my dream
Fabulous such dedication in the rework. Love it.
I love how big the tires look compared to the car, something special about that.
NICELY PUT TOGETHER JAY.......LOVE THE MK1 STYLE WITH THE SWB IDEA, WITH THE V12, GOOD WORK!
I always enjoy hearing these say they used Willwood Brakes. Love the company. But more over, It feels like they actually took a look around the block instead of saying "I'll just use Brembos."
A lot of work, a lot of love. Thanks for sharing your garage, Jay.
Hi Mr. Leno. I love this car a lot. I also like the 120 just about as much. It would be interesting to have that motor in the 120. I think it would make for a scary Jag. Oh, I forgot to comment on that Bronco and it's just nuts and like you said you can get in trouble pretty quick with that thing. Absolute beautiful job. Those folks do fantastic work. Take care, Mr. Leno.
When I was a boy, I just about thought the XKE was the sexiest thing on 4 wheels... and of course the V12 was the sexiest Jag engine. With all the modifications, improvements and enhancements To my way of thinking, this Jaguar would be the ultimate XKE to own. A car I could love as passionately as I did the originals, but being not original, an XKE that could be driven, instead of trailered. Jay sees something great and if can acquire it, he does. Great Car Great Vid, always my hero
I had one of these and when I got married I sold it because the wife said it wasn't practical, turns out it was the wife that wasn't practical, now they are both gone and I sure miss that car!
hahahahaha ! hope you get it back !
Jay Leno has hundreds of cars in his garage, but has only one pair of jeans and a shirt in his closet. Modest man!
What you had no words to explain. I understand completely and so do many here watching this show. My neighbor on Governors Island on Lake Winnipesaukee had a brand new V-12 XKE and I had a 1970 MGB. Sometimes we would trade when she had a date that she did not want to know who she was. I was in High Schoo. So driving to school in a new yellow XKE was great. One question? To get power out of her V-12 XKE one had to get to the end of the throttle. Was this normal in Jags? I always wondered. Simple days, simple fun, feel sorry for young people that never get off their phones or earbuds.
The amount of work it took to create this is nuts.
A great looking Jag! I could never afford a Jag so I rebuilt a MGB with a Weber carb and header, it was fun, but it was no Jag. I've always loved British sports cars and to me there is no other sports cars other than British. I grew up around the muscle cars of the 60's, GTO, 442, Corvette, Mustang, ect. ect. but the British had something special and the Jag XKE to me was the top of the line.
That's a lot of work to get it to how he wanted it, but wow wee what a car.
Simply beautiful.
A classic jag section, the guy is living the dream.
