I've been through his shop in Austin. It's like a hospital. They hand fabricate everything. Not just Jaguars. They had an Aston Martin that was in bare metal at the time and it was flawless. Upper echelon of restoration shops!
Truly art on wheels. Well done to you guys for honoring Steve and accomplishing the final product. I'm not an emotional person but this one got me down to another level! Thanks
I love the tribute given to the absolute King of Cool. I was 8 years old when I watched the Great Escape... Steve's motorcycle scenes stole my imagination. For the next six years I worked doing anything I could to earn money, saved it all, and at 14 walked into a dealership and paid cash for a new bike. I raised some serious hell on that bike... great memories. At 18, I had an accident while racing, woke up in a hospital room, and recall my mom breaking down in my dad's arms. I remember thinking that wasn't a good sign. Multiple surgeries and 48 years later I still ride an Electra Glide Ultra Classic with my wife as the trusty copilot. We have logged many miles across the US and Canada and owe a good piece of our adventures to the inspiration gifted many years ago by Mr. McQueen.
Arguably the sexiest looking car of all time. For Mr. Mooney to create a tweaked tribute to the original Steve McQueen car is way beyond cool. Must have been a blast to throw it around up in 'the twisties'. A real work of art and a great episode!
I saw a British racing green XKE convertible in my grocery store parking lot. That was the most beautiful car I've seen in the flesh. The older gentleman was exiting his car and I blurted out, "That is one beautiful car".
I am very much so not a fan of the classic sexy Ferraris (f40 and dinos are just fugly imo), but the xkss just seriously does something for me. Much much more so than a 250gto or even an f1, this is my true no-budget dream car
@@realMaverickBuckley I just seriously love all those cars. Tbh my love for jag looks kinda stopped when the e-type came out though. I think I even like the xk150 more than even the s1 etype

This is one of those interesting Jay Leno video's where everything is just right. Interesting and sharp guest, a beautiful car which is build by said guest and an interested Jay.
I wish they had a bit more "shizzle" in their camera work and editing ala Top Gear, but I do like the show. They don't have anywhere near the TG budget. TG/BBC tried to hire him, but he turned down the gig. I had never heard of seen a XKSS. Very sweet. JLR was going to make a EV 60s era E-type for $300K and cancelled the program, I guess due to lack of interest and a high price point.
When I was young, a friend of my father had a 1954 D-type, which I worshipped, polished, and occasionally got to ride in. There's one feature of this car which is necessarily different from the prototype, since the motor is a lot taller and not tilted as much; the power bulge in the hood is larger and centred. The real thing had the bulge towards the left side. (Passenger on the original car, because they were RHD.) I'll bet they had trouble keeping the steering column and the exhaust from interfering with each other when building this one.
He's still got his 'MET police British detective demeanor' after transitioning from that job, one gets the sense that nothing escapes him and he doesn't make rushed decisions.
The best video since the McQueen or Bizzarini. Congratulations to Dan Mooney for building such a spectacular gem - an updated and uprated XKSS -- Mcqueen would be more than delighted. Jay Leno did a wonderful job of describing and driving this amazing Jaguar. I hope to see many more modern classics on Jay's channel.
Had to watch this back-to-back with Jay's previous ride in the OG Jag (which I recommend everyone do): same big smiles, same heart-pumping run-by. I would say Mr. Mooney has accomplished his goal with a mad flourish, something you can't easily put a price-tag on.
About the time this car was built my dad took me at 5 years old for a spin in a Jag XK140 roadster. It was frightening! I was glad to get back to the safety of our 55 Ford Fairlane convertible. I want another try with THIS Jag!
This is a absolutely stunning motorcar . I’ve always had a deep deep love for this jaguar . Amazing and with the extra power it must be a absolute lightning bolt . The original car was fast this must be capable of close to 190 mph . I’d be curious to see one of the jaguar factory continuation cars aside this . I’ve only seen photos and videos but to me this almost seems a little more beautiful. I am curious if this is perhaps a massive improvement from the original with brakes that actually work without needing to rev the engine first.
In later years Jaguar became a bit lazy touring vehicles with the XJS as an absolute zero point but Mercedes did the same thing when the era of classic motor racing was finished as their 230 SL was no sports car any more but a grand tourer. And think of Pegaso, Cunningham, Talbot Lago, Panhard DB, Gordini, Abarth, Maserati, Ferrari, Lancia, Alpine, Matra and many more who made the pure sports/racing vehicles of the period, a time lost forever now in electric boredom

Great Video as always Jay. Thank you... On a Triumph being used by the Germans in WW2. The Brits left a lot of equipment, vehicles and firearms behind after Dunkirk. The Germans used that equipment for the rest of the war. At one point they even had entire battalions of German soldiers equipped with "Lee-Enfield 303" rifles so the use of a Triumph motorcycle is certainly not impossible. :)
I have been drooling through the whole episode. I am assuming that he brought it so the folks as the Peterson could see it. You get to play with all the cool toys Jay, thanks for sharing, your Mom should be proud 👍

I followed this build on their Instagram account. Absolutely beautiful and even better than the original. It sounds and looks beautiful!! Congratulations!!
What an amazing, gorgeous replica. The D, XKSS, and E are all rolling works of art. However, I still think Malcolm Sayer's magnum opus was the XJ13. To my mind, the most beautiful car ever designed and built. I also think Porsche spent a good deal of time designing the body of the Boxster with an eye on the XJ13. Thanks for making these Jay!
I agree with the XJ13, one of the most beautiful cars of all time; have the Autoart model on my dining room table but a HUGE no to the Boxster as it was loosely designed with an eye on the 550 Spyder (I have the Boxster showcar model in my living room) and it really has NO lines that evoke thoughts of the XJ13.
For me the C type is prettier. This car looks to have been blinged for the American market. The most beautiful of Sayer's designs was the XP/11. This prototype car sat between the D and E type. Sadly that car was recycled by the factory. Would make a fantastic alternative body for a Proteus or similar replica.
This os one of the BEST looking cars I have ever seen! Kudos to the gentleman who did the build and to Jay who gave him the opportunity to show the fruit of 2 years of hard work! RIP Steve McQueen!
19:39 Given Jay's struggle just to get into the car, it would be amusing to see how he managed to get back out. I'm guessing he either had to grab on to one of the Stertil-Koni lifts or have the crew turn the car upside down and shake him out. Haaaa! 😅🤣😂

Brilliant as always. Yet there is nothing better than the 'first time'. It was one of my favorites too. We restored Triumphs back in the 1980's. The best TR-4 had a GT-6 Plus motor, exhaust, and suspension. That was a great motor too. A hard to find Triumph would be a GT-6.
I think this is the most beautiful Jaguar. I know the E-Type is the car that has been in a museum, and I owned two E-Types but I like the looks of this car, XKSS the best.
I never realized that this car had a wheelbase just a little smaller than my MGB. Its overall length is 4 inches longer than my MGB though. A truly beautiful machine, its the Jag I've always wanted.
We had a 65 XKE. 4.2 L six. Isky cams. Went from 60 to 120 mph in what seemed like 2 seconds. Thank God the tires didn't blow. Drove it on road with rolling hills. Car would go airborne for 5 seconds, then just float back to the pavement, nice soft landing. Hysterical 😝. Good old days.
Forty two years after Steve McQueen's death, he's still influencing ,still admired and still being talked about . He died from mesothelioma ,a cancer that starts in the lining of the internal organs .Always associated with asbestos exposure . This cancer is almost always fatal . Terence Steve McQueen March 24, 1930 - November 7, 1980 .
Wonderful. Although never having been a Jaguar fan (except of the XJS), this is of course a true delight. I would personally classify it as a replica mod perhaps as there are profusely many modifications. One can see the seat on the right has apparently been used for driving. However, much respect of course for this car and this man’s business. Thank you for showing.
Being born in 1959 I was a child for Steve McQueen's acting career but he and Paul Newman were my Idols, they did the things I wish I could have done, I did ride dirt bikes but auto racing was beyond my wallet. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
Some of the factory racing D Types could see 170 mph on the Mulsanne Straight at LeMans. I have no doubt that this car has the power to weight ratio to do better, but it lacks the stability provided by the long nose versions with the rear fin. 91” wheelbase is really short for anything over 130 or so without aero mods. The Series 1 E Type had the Malcom Sayer designed long nose married to a 96” wheelbase. The track was narrow by modern standards. Even so I found it stable and predictable in stock form up to 140 mph. Cruising at 100-120 mph was really the sweet spot. I saw 147 mph on a couple occasions. Having owned several different 3.4, 3.8, and 4.2 liter cars I can confirm that the shorter stroke cars ( 3.4 and 3.8) were noticeably smoother and had a sportier nature. Sadly production Jaguar gearboxes were nothing like modern gearboxes and punished those who tried to speed up the gear change. One reason for this, besides the weak syncros, was the wide spacing between gears necessary for high top speed. With practice one could downshift into the non syncro first gear without grinding while moving. In normal driving one learned to roll the stop sign in second and slip the clutch. The earlier stock clutches similarly became rough and juddery when pushed. I was changing them out at 16 in the carport at home and quickly learned to be kind to that component. While the E Type bonnet was removable, I found the job easier on the XK 120-150 series. The transmission could be removed without pulling the motor on those cars. While Jaguar was among the first to offer disc brakes on production models, they did not work anywhere as well as contemporary Porsche brakes. The Dunlop brakes on the Series 1 E Type were terrible when cold and wet, making commuting in traffic a very tense affair. Servicing the inboard ( ingrown!) rear brakes was expensive, tedious, and time consuming. The design did reduce unsprung weight at the wheel for improved ride quality and handling.

He died from mesothelioma ,a cancer that starts in the lining of the internal organs .Always associated with asbestos exposure . This cancer is almost always fatal .
Terence Steve McQueen
March 24, 1930 - November 7, 1980 .
Much too young. He was the epitome of cool.
Bucket list item is an understatement. Beautiful
The XJS was probably their worst car ever, poor design and awful BL quality control
The Dunlop brakes on the Series 1 E Type
were terrible when cold and wet, making commuting in traffic a very tense affair. Servicing the inboard ( ingrown!) rear brakes was expensive, tedious, and time consuming. The design did reduce unsprung weight at the wheel for improved ride quality and handling.
That car is stunning
Classic Jaguar does amazing work. The best on this side of the Atlantic for sure!!
This is the STAND-IN for Real Car. I love it.
This car makes happy just looking at it. Beautiful thing, incredible dedication.
