I've been through his shop in Austin. It's like a hospital. They hand fabricate everything. Not just Jaguars. They had an Aston Martin that was in bare metal at the time and it was flawless. Upper echelon of restoration shops!

I wish they had a bit more "shizzle" in their camera work and editing ala Top Gear, but I do like the show. They don't have anywhere near the TG budget. TG/BBC tried to hire him, but he turned down the gig. I had never heard of seen a XKSS. Very sweet. JLR was going to make a EV 60s era E-type for $300K and cancelled the program, I guess due to lack of interest and a high price point.

When I was young, a friend of my father had a 1954 D-type, which I worshipped, polished, and occasionally got to ride in. There's one feature of this car which is necessarily different from the prototype, since the motor is a lot taller and not tilted as much; the power bulge in the hood is larger and centred. The real thing had the bulge towards the left side. (Passenger on the original car, because they were RHD.) I'll bet they had trouble keeping the steering column and the exhaust from interfering with each other when building this one.

I love the tribute given to the absolute King of Cool. I was 8 years old when I watched the Great Escape... Steve's motorcycle scenes stole my imagination. For the next six years I worked doing anything I could to earn money, saved it all, and at 14 walked into a dealership and paid cash for a new bike. I raised some serious hell on that bike... great memories.
At 18, I had an accident while racing, woke up in a hospital room, and recall my mom breaking down in my dad's arms. I remember thinking that wasn't a good sign. Multiple surgeries and 48 years later I still ride an Electra Glide Ultra Classic with my wife as the trusty copilot. We have logged many miles across the US and Canada and owe a good piece of our adventures to the inspiration gifted many years ago by Mr. McQueen.

This is a absolutely stunning motorcar . I’ve always had a deep deep love for this jaguar . Amazing and with the extra power it must be a absolute lightning bolt . The original car was fast this must be capable of close to 190 mph .
I’d be curious to see one of the jaguar factory continuation cars aside this .
I’ve only seen photos and videos but to me this almost seems a little more beautiful. I am curious if this is perhaps a massive improvement from the original with brakes that actually work without needing to rev the engine first.

In later years Jaguar became a bit lazy touring vehicles with the XJS as an absolute zero point but Mercedes did the same thing when the era of classic motor racing was finished as their 230 SL was no sports car any more but a grand tourer. And think of Pegaso, Cunningham, Talbot Lago, Panhard DB, Gordini, Abarth, Maserati, Ferrari, Lancia, Alpine, Matra and many more who made the pure sports/racing vehicles of the period, a time lost forever now in electric boredom

The Germans used that equipment for the rest of the war. At one point they even had entire battalions of German soldiers equipped with "Lee-Enfield 303" rifles so the use of a Triumph motorcycle is certainly not impossible. :)

I agree with the XJ13, one of the most beautiful cars of all time; have the Autoart model on my dining room table but a HUGE no to the Boxster as it was loosely designed with an eye on the 550 Spyder (I have the Boxster showcar model in my living room) and it really has NO lines that evoke thoughts of the XJ13.

For me the C type is prettier. This car looks to have been blinged for the American market. The most beautiful of Sayer's designs was the XP/11. This prototype car sat between the D and E type. Sadly that car was recycled by the factory. Would make a fantastic alternative body for a Proteus or similar replica.

Some of the factory racing D Types could see 170 mph on the Mulsanne Straight at LeMans. I have no doubt that this car has the power to weight ratio to do better, but it lacks the stability provided by the long nose versions with the rear fin. 91” wheelbase is really short for anything over 130 or so without aero mods. The Series 1 E Type had the Malcom Sayer designed long nose married to a 96” wheelbase. The track was narrow by modern standards. Even so I found it stable and predictable in stock form up to 140 mph. Cruising at 100-120 mph was really the sweet spot. I saw 147 mph on a couple occasions. Having owned several different 3.4, 3.8, and 4.2 liter cars I can confirm that the shorter stroke cars ( 3.4 and 3.8) were noticeably smoother and had a sportier nature. Sadly production Jaguar gearboxes were nothing like modern gearboxes and punished those who tried to speed up the gear change. One reason for this, besides the weak syncros, was the wide spacing between gears necessary for high top speed. With practice one could downshift into the non syncro first gear without grinding while moving. In normal driving one learned to roll the stop sign in second and slip the clutch. The earlier stock clutches similarly became rough and juddery when pushed. I was changing them out at 16 in the carport at home and quickly learned to be kind to that component. While the E Type bonnet was removable, I found the job easier on the XK 120-150 series. The transmission could be removed without pulling the motor on those cars. While Jaguar was among the first to offer disc brakes on production models, they did not work anywhere as well as contemporary Porsche brakes. The Dunlop brakes on the Series 1 E Type
were terrible when cold and wet, making commuting in traffic a very tense affair. Servicing the inboard ( ingrown!) rear brakes was expensive, tedious, and time consuming. The design did reduce unsprung weight at the wheel for improved ride quality and handling.

I think this is the most beautiful Jaguar. I know the E-Type is the car that has been in a museum, and I owned two E-Types but I like the looks of this car, XKSS the best.

Amazing job all handmade, remarkable. And it's true small light cars are more fun, some of the new supercars are way too big to be enjoyed apart of oval track.

  • @lars277
    @lars277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It reminds me of my youth. My brother and I got an electric race track with replicas model racers. They were styled after the Ferrari, the Lotus, and the Jag. No American cars. That is how out of it the Americans were in the early 60s. So, it must have been before Ford went and kicked butt with the GT40. Anyway, my brother and I would have fun with these cars. They had little headlights in them that ran on the same rheostat that the motors ran on. So, on the straightaways, the lights would brighten because we had them pegged. All you needed was an imagination. Those were the days. I remember it wasn't until the Cobra roadsters and Corvettes of the mid sixties that the Jaguar started decreasing in popularity. I remember those days when XJ did not mean a model of Jeep. It meant a serious British sports car that dominated the sports car circuit in the early 60s.

Saw some of the video's of Steve's at his airport hanger, sure was rough as Jay says. In Great Escape I heard Steve wanted to do the jump but insurance company refused to let him. Had he broken a leg or arm would have screwed up the movie timetable and cost them a chunk of money. One of the best actors...shame to lose him so early.

Hey StephenZ827, I agree...the loss of McQueen was far too early.
It wasn't cigarettes that caused his lung cancer. It was the asbestos material used in the racing balaclavas of that period. Unfortunately, Steve was only 1 of too many racers who have died of asbestos-related lung cancer.
      Best regards,
      Ben

You wont be around to be proven wrong on the one thing. Because in the future, there will be no cars anymore. All of our current primitive ways to move about will be celebrated as nostalgic individual mobility, regardless of what made it move. Whenever that is. Exercise your imagination more. 😉

They where all smiles at the end! I love cars that I can use all the power like Jay says and there is nothing like these cars from the 50’s and 60’s, light and no assistance in driving aids. You get to feel the road, you actually get a workout when controlling it during the turns, your left leg with the clutch.
I would give anything to own a car like that or even drive one. I’ll keep working hard and who knows one day

Beautiful car!! Fast too, a D type in racing at Le Mans 24hr, the types could hit 160--180mph on Mulsanne Straight ( a very very long straight! )
Jaguar were the first at Le Mans race to use disc brakes ( 1955 ) Mercedes Benz etc did Not trust disc brakes, they had them the next year?
The racing D types used the 3.8 XK engine, a very good DOHC, ( chain driven ) 2 valves per cylinder
