An English guest comes over and Jay says 'Does the boot open as well? ' In my opinion Jay has one of the most respectful personalities between the celebrities of today. Lots to learn from him
GentleMEN restored it. Dan owns a shop with a top-notch crew who do painstaking work on every car. They do all the frame work, welding, body panels, paint, upholstery and they have a full machine shop, too. It's an incredible operation.
My Dad brought a 36K mile 1963 E Type OTS home one evening in 1969. He paid $2400 for it. As a 14 year old junior gearhead I was over the moon and spent countless hours sitting in that car in our long driveway staring out over that incredible hood. At 16 I received permission to occasionally drive it with parental supervision. At 17 I was taking it out on Saturday nights and racing everybody in town. While not the quickest in the quarter mile, only the big block Corvette was as fast top speed. Many wonderful muscle cars could run in the 13’s but most topped out between 115-130 depending on gearing. Aero drag limited the high speed. Our Jag would do 115 in 3rd and once in 4th would just walk away on up to 150 without modification. Malcom Sayer was the aerodynamicist who designed the shape of the E Type with the aid of a wind tunnel. A former WW2 aircraft designer, he also helped design the winning C and World beating D types. The C2 Corvettes suffered from poor aero design and instability at speed. I have driven that 1963 E Type at 130 mph in a driving NW winter rainstorm. The brakes, 4 wheel Dunlop discs, were not quite up to the task, though better than the American muscle cars at speed. The Jag 4 wheel independent suspension worked very well, and full on powerslides were easily controllable unless it was wet. A snap spin at speed in an E Type is something you will never forget. As Jay mentioned, the rack and pinion steering gave remarkable feedback but transmitted a lot of niggling vibration and was not power assisted. Designed for bias ply tires, replacing them with radials resulted in more steering effort, especially at slow speed. All was forgiven above 40 mph. High speed stability was unmatched by any contemporary car that I have driven. We owned this car for 45 years. It was a daily driver for 7. The positraction rear end made it extremely slippery in the snow. I really loved the early non syncro first gear Moss gearbox. While the gear change couldn’t be rushed in a drag race, it felt extremely solid, had short throws, was quiet, and was a joy to operate. I was quickly able to master flawless double clutch downshifts into first while moving without grinding or damage, but this was rarely needed because of the huge low end torque. One just learned to roll the stop signs in second in town. We also had a 1969 E Type with the new Jaguar built full syncro gearbox as in the featured car. This was a popular upgrade back in the day but I didn’t feel it necessary for the 1963 car. I sold the Jag a few year ago and feel very blessed to not only have had it a big part of my life for decades, but a strong physical reminder of my Father, as it was his car. I never wrecked it, and mechanical repairs were limited to brakes, tires, exhaust system, one clutch, and tuneups. The triple SU carbs only gave trouble if you let the car sit for a year or more with ethanol gas. The new owner is performing a complete restoration and I hope he finds as much joy as we have with that remarkable car.
Thanks for the wonderful recount! One of main reasons I come to Jays is exposure to vehicles I've never experienced myself. To learn of their workings and history, a genuine feel for the vehicle and people who own and build them. While I'm more a Springsteen american V8 gearhead, I just love the simple elegant beauty and design of the E Type. A brute without being a brute. Appreciate you taking the time to share your own history and thoughts on this wonderful piece of history. And even better you drove it as intended, learning and experiencing the car as a complete package, not just the beauty, as most examples in 2019 are never "driven" if you know what I mean........ Huge kudos for bringing us this build Jay, mechanical poetry that will get "driven" !!
Thanks for the appreciation Steve. My Father was also a gearhead, and encouraged me from a very early age to dive deep into all things mechanical. I bought, repaired, and sold 10 cars at a profit before I was 16. I didn’t lose money until I started wrecking them, but Father wisely told me: “ If you wreck it, you fix it”. I was sectioning Volkswagens at 12 and selling them. Sure got tired of repairing my 1961 MG Midget over and over. But it made me a better driver quickly. Back in the late 1960’s I could buy good running Jaguars, Porsches, and Mercedes for $1500 or less. I missed out on a very low mile Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing for $5000. My Mother blocked my purchase of an Aston Martin DB2 Drophead for $600 saying she didn’t have one at 16 so I wasn’t going to have one.. I did own hundreds of cool and unique cars and got to drive just about everything. A very fortunate childhood thanks to my Dad. He never bought a car for me, but showed me how to enjoy the hobby and make enough money to pay for college.
Patrick Leclercq I look at a car like the 1963 Jaguar E-Type and I see a work of art. You look at it and see something that apparently offends your sensibilities. It's amazing how the same object can inspire such diametrically opposing assessments. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", eh?

I'll never forget the first time I drove an E-type. I was 18 and my first car after HS was a '63 Austin Healey 3000. The parts manager at the MG dealer where I bought it loaned me his '61 E-type when my car was in for service one day. I fell in love immediately! When he decided to sell it (because his dress shoes wouldn't fit under the dash!) he refused to sell it to me because I coudn't afford to maintain it properly.
61 E type in the US? My father had a 63. Sold it three months before I got my drivers license and replaced it with a 307 Chevy Biscayne 2 speed automatic. I am alive today as a result.
I’ve always loved the e-type since I was a child. The car was born the same year I was and my father had a series 3 V12 when I was 16 for a few years. It’s my ambition to own a ‘61 series 1 fully restored when I retire. Utterly beautiful machines and this guy’s knowledge is encyclopaedic!

Exactly what struck me too. I don't think i've ever heard Jay be so respectfully attentive with a guest except maybe when the likes of Mclaren head honcho come over..
I lost count of the number of times he said *... we've been very fortunate...". A priceless individual who Jay just seems to attract in spades. Another awesome inspiration.
I accidentally found Dan’s old garage in Lockhart Texas around 1994. I saw a beautiful blue 71 etype parked in an enclosed area. The place was near Black’s BBQ owned by old man Black a ww2 veteran. I went inside and there was Dan working on an American car. Very nice guy, he warmly shook my hand when I told him I had a pale primrose 68 etype 4.2. He later moved to oakhill by Motorola design center. I wish I had enough money to get Dan to make my car a daily driver. He offered to restore my car to a decent condition for 25k but that was not affordable :(. I did buy a frame from him and a battery for a reasonable price. I would often visit his garage to see his version of a series IV. It was gorgeous. It went to Mexico later. A talented mechanic if I ever met one. I wish him all the success.
19:05 I loved seeing the engine actually move while breathing l Great show! The car's beauty and wonderful notes on the road make up for the guest's flathead engine personality! :) Respect to him for retiring from Scotland Yard to work on his passion. This man's crew did a fantastic job on this car. It may be the best looking AND sounding car on the show I've seen so far. I'm a late fan to Jay's Garage. Jay's so informative and knowledgeable. He gives some of his guests helpful info on their restos that is neat to see on the spot. Thank you Jay again!

Hard to believe but Dan Mooney was one of the probationary Police Constables I took walking the beat at Kings Cross police station in North London in the early 80s
Mr. Leno, I wish you would do one about the 1984 VW GTI. Only 90 HP, but under 2000 pounds, it was an amazing car. This car offered something called the "Bentley Manual", which was an incredibly comprehensive repair manual the likes of which nobody had ever seen. It allowed anyone to work on this car in great detail and tune it to perfection. This was the ultimate entry level tuner vehicle for an entire generation, I am sure you are aware of it's legend. Luv U Jay. Dig your stuff, Please do the classic original GTI !
He did a remarkable job on the restoration. Flawless! The paint looks better than 99% of cars seen on TH-cam. I'd love to see it in person. And to hear that sweet exhaust note live. Edit: I guess for $450k you'd expect nothing but the finest in craftsmanship.
I love this car it brings back good memories. When I was a young kid, there was a guy in my neighborhood who owned an E-type, but unfortunately he never drove it. He would start it up from time to time, and I loved the sound of the engine. I always imagined what it would be like to go for a ride in it. There was also a guy I knew at church who restored an E-type with his father and he brought it to church one time and it was painted in the same paint scheme as the one on this episode. I've always been fascinated by this car and it's nice to see them tastefully restored and preserved for everyone to enjoy.

23:50 Ah the smile of a man that just made a sale. How could you not order one of these? Absolutely incredible. The sound of it is almost too good to comprehend. Amazing car.
This was absolutely freakin' brilliant! Drop dead gorgeous car and I could listen to the proprietor of Classic Jaguar forever. A wealth of knowledge and know how not just on the marque but on cars in general. Excellent episode. Thanks.
Jay asks, “Do any of your customers give you a hard time? Are they flakes? Answer: “No, I tell them up front that it’s $500k and they all pay and become my friends.” Hilarious!
Usually I am not a huge fan of E Types, but this one is an absolute beauty! Also I like the guy that build it seeming to be veeeeeery competent when it comes to his Jaguar topic!
The amount of trust these car owners put in Jay is so very much well deserved, some of the best reviews ever imho, I especially like watching him drool over a car for 20 minutes, then, "Can we take it for a drive?", and he gets to drive, wheee! My favorites are the ones when the owner/passenger/why says "We race this, give it some gas man!" [sic] Go go Mr. Leno! My bucket list includes to smell the tan leather interior of a forest green, 2+2 E-type with the same drive train as this one, such a fabulous car, you are truly blessed to be able to drive so many beauty's around, and we are equally as blessed to be able to live these moments in a vicarious world. Thank you!
I don't care how many e-type videos Jay does, he can do as many has he likes all because of that straight six goodness. One of the best sounding engines of all time.
Most beautiful car ever!..Gorgeous in that color! The builder's not having any of Jay's humor though! Oh wait, he was a detective...trained to detect B.S!
I remember my dad told me an E-Type is his favorite classic car and I've always wanted to give him one, hopefully I can one day. Such a unique-looking car.
I gotta say Jay. Thankyou so much firstly. Second, I have never seen a full episode of the late show bck when... but I seek out your car n bike stuff because your passion and enthusiasm are informed intelligent and infectious. May the road rise up to meet you and the sun shine on your back. 😊
beautiful. we have a 2001 xkr convertable which i consider to be the most beautiful car ever made. the decendant of this and today the most underated in my opinion. Very affordable right now. I drive a Nissan Sentra and only take the Jaguar out maybe once a week when the traffic is light and the weather perfect. the best thing about it is the pleasure of just looking at it. sometimes i take the cover off just to smile at the way it looks.sold for $86500 new. and we got it in perfect shape for $10000. very very lucky. the guy had downsized and had no garage room anymore. he knew we would take care of it the way he and the other two owners did. 82000 miles on it now. no cars ever built looked as good as the Jaguars i believe
It does sound as an angry jaguar too. It's amazing to see a car that was literally break in two back to life and even better than when it left the factory. Beautiful job.
That Jag has a cool paint job and goes fast! Love those cars! That old car looks so cool, it sounds good witch means it has the power and beauty it had a long time ago! Love the car and the video like always!
I love the flush light covers. No chrome rings. I love the elimination of the mismatched chrome around the driver door. I love the original, but this is cleaned up.

GentleMEN restored it. Dan owns a shop with a top-notch crew who do painstaking work on every car. They do all the frame work, welding, body panels, paint, upholstery and they have a full machine shop, too. It's an incredible operation.
He is so properly English in his insistence that it is uncouth to drive it with the roof off.
In-depth knowledge is so pre woke, bordering on racist.

The E-Type Jag is to automobiles, what the Supermarine Spitfire is to aircraft. Both classic English designs. Just beautiful!

And both have distinctive beautiful sounds
More like Cessna 172
And the Triumph Spitfire is the Jaguar E Type for poor people

Beautiful. Car is a work of art. My dream garage would have a Dan Mooney E-Type and a Singer Porsche.
Soy Boy
I just said the same!!!

Ah the smile of a man that just made a sale. How could you not order one of these? Absolutely incredible. The sound of it is almost too good to comprehend. Amazing car.
Mike McDermott ...Mike didn’t Dan say something about “the owner”?
That sound gives me goosebumps. I can only imagine how it sounds in real life.
It's hard to beat the perfect beauty of these E-Type Jaguars.
This was absolutely freakin' brilliant! Drop dead gorgeous car and I could listen to the proprietor of Classic Jaguar forever. A wealth of knowledge and know how not just on the marque but on cars in general. Excellent episode. Thanks.
Everything looks so tiny and elegant, but powerful at the same time. Stunning!
WOW! Beautiful work Dan. Absolutely gorgeous.
I love how no matter what angle/vocals they choose, Jays team always syncs the sound of the car up to the video so we can hear what we see.
Jay asks, “Do any of your customers give you a hard time? Are they flakes? Answer: “No, I tell them up front that it’s $500k and they all pay and become my friends.” Hilarious!
I bought a mega millions ticket today and the drawing is in a couple of hours. If I win I'll call you tomorrow Dan. That Jag is stunning.
Oh God! The sound!
Terrific Episode, Jay. thanks
The E-Type is the most beautiful car ever made!
Yes without a doubt.!!!! JAGUAR XK-8S are your modern day E-Type
Usually I am not a huge fan of E Types, but this one is an absolute beauty! Also I like the guy that build it seeming to be veeeeeery competent when it comes to his Jaguar topic!
1 hour and over 6300 views.If that's not love...Thank you,and your team,for such great videos.
70k in one day!!
Wow that's one Lovely Jaguar boy does she Purr!!! what a Great Car and a Great Guest as well
The amount of trust these car owners put in Jay is so very much well deserved, some of the best reviews ever imho, I especially like watching him drool over a car for 20 minutes, then, "Can we take it for a drive?", and he gets to drive, wheee! My favorites are the ones when the owner/passenger/why says "We race this, give it some gas man!" [sic]
Go go Mr. Leno!
My bucket list includes to smell the tan leather interior of a forest green, 2+2 E-type with the same drive train as this one, such a fabulous car, you are truly blessed to be able to drive so many beauty's around, and we are equally as blessed to be able to live these moments in a vicarious world.
Thank you!
Such a beautiful car and that sound is amazing.
Perfect 👌
I don't care how many e-type videos Jay does, he can do as many has he likes all because of that straight six goodness. One of the best sounding engines of all time.
It's a shame that Malcolm Sayer, the genius who designed it, never really got a lot of recognition for his masterpiece :(
I've found that he does do in car magazines and clubs and what have you.
This car is beautiful. The E-Type is the most beautiful car ever built, along maybe with an Apollo 3500 GT
Finally a guy that knows how to pronounce Jaguar!
There is no correct way of pronouncing it. The word is from the animal and it 100% depends on accent.
Rubbish, he never once said "Jaaaaaaaaag"!
@@vika0194 ... Jag u ar, now you try it.
6sexysize I know how it’s pronounced in the UK and I know how other languages pronounce it... now try those.. in Sweden we say ”yagwar”
Hey Jimmy, how do you pronounce "niggling bellend"?
I gotta say Jay. Thankyou so much firstly. Second, I have never seen a full episode of the late show bck when... but I seek out your car n bike stuff because your passion and enthusiasm are informed intelligent and infectious. May the road rise up to meet you and the sun shine on your back. 😊
That! is one incredible car. Beautifully put together. Respect.
beautiful. we have a 2001 xkr convertable which i consider to be the most beautiful car ever made. the decendant of this and today the most underated in my opinion.
This... is the most beautiful car ever made...
qdood I'd agree on that. Hell, it'd still look fresh & new if it came out today. That's how far ahead of its time it was, imo.
I think 300 SLl is the most beautiful
This, but with the fastback, not the roadsters.
That's very subjective.... i dont agree with you.
@@johncollins7423 no it wouldn't.
Nice to see Jay get to talk with car guy that's on his own level. GREAT STUFF!
Good lookin' car, doesn't get any more old school than that! You rarely see oldies like that one, in this day & age! Thanks for showing this, Jay!
Absolutely stunning. One of the most beautiful automobiles EVER...
Extremely well done. Sounds fantastic 😎🏁🇬🇧
My only complaint with this episode is not enough drive bys. Such a fantastic sounding engine. Well done sir!
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL..
I REALLY ENJOY THE CONVERSATIONS JAY HAS WITH PEOPLE ABOUT THESE CARS..
THIS IS MY FAVORITE TH-cam CHANNEL....
I love Jay's knowledge and enthusiasm for his cars and as a die hard Jaguar enthusiast am a great fan of his channel
Thanks Jay, that was great!
That Noise! That infectious delicacy of a Noise!
And its a Beautiful car. :)
What a beautiful car
I love the flush light covers. No chrome rings. I love the elimination of the mismatched chrome around the driver door. I love the original, but this is cleaned up.
I see why many consider these the most beautiful cars ever made. I think I agree
MichaelKingsfordGray speak for yourself.
Magnificent! Truly. Gentleman has a coppers eye for detail.
Beautiful car, would prefer this without the white circle dots.
One of my favorite cars growing up as a kid. This guy did a great restoration.
Factory Flavor!! A New James Bond movie should feature this Gorgeous Ride! Cheers Dan on a Perfect E Type!
When Austin Powers is a better Bond than James, you know it's time they gave up.
I love it! Beautiful era for Jaguar
The builder also restomoded his hair...nicely done 👏
Lol
Steve mcqueen was beating up his wife and kids dude
I've driven past Classic Jaguar's shop many times and never knew the level of work going on there. How intriguing!
Men
Achingly beautiful.
