Used to work on these trains as a conductor. The staff all hated these double decker wagons and the Vienna-Zürich-Hamburg route. Best wagons were the old German sleeper carriages with blue upholstery. Excellent design, and loved by passengers and staff alike. They were only used on the routes to Milan, Venice and Rome. Please spare a small tip for your wagon attendants if you can. It's a tough job, especially in summer, and the company doesn't treat the workers very well.
I like this night train. Last time I even had a compartment all to myself with my own shower and toilet. I found that very practical, because I prefer to sleep showered.
When I was stationed in Germany, the one thing I loved about the trains is that they would announce in German and English. How very nice and accommodating, In the US we would never think of doing that.

Can you point me to the minute mark where this is discussed? I watched twice but still can't find it. I'm also disabled and I noticed there are 3 stairs to get up into the train, then 3 down into the sleeper cabin, and the bathroom didn't look handicap accessible either. I wondered if maybe the deluxe cabin was the handicap accessible option, but are those on the upper level? So with stairs? I have been watching these overnight train videos but so far none of them seem possible for someone like me. Does anyone know of any options, even a different train company altogether?
Once, many years ago when the City Night Line still existed, I saw one of those in Utrecht, the Netherlands. While the train drove off before I could take it all in, it was a complete riot of different carriages. I managed to get a confirmed spotting of a similar consist, and it had Swiss, Austrian, German, Czech and Hungarian carriages, in all sorts of colours, and both single and double deck. Took me years to collect them as models, and the WRmbz will require some rebuilding of an ARkimbz. It's good to see that ÖBB picked up where the other European operators all but gave up on night trains.
I went on the city nightline from Basel to Amsterdam and had one of the upstairs rooms, fantastic, great bed a bathroom , table and two chairs, small bottle of wine , breakfast brought to me . great trip, AND what happened to City night line 🥲🥲
These double decker are old City Night Line coaches that have been taken over by ÖBB. I traveled in one of the deluxe compartments and I was disappointed. It seems that there was only a paint job on the outside done. Inside the shower could not be used as water was floating in the basin amongst some dust flakes... No power socket in the compartment other than in the bathroom. Apart from that the service was good but they have to step up a notch when it comes to the maintenance of the compartments.

(Both before and after that semester and during our school breaks we travel all over central and eastern Europe by train, departing more than a few times from this main train station.) (Vienna was a great hub for traveling in all directions, east, west, north, and south). It was fantastic). Thank you for bringing back my good memories.

Thank you for a great review. It was a shame about the broken blind, and very untypical of OBB ! I’ve not used the NightJet service on the Wien to Zurich route, as I prefer the daytime RailJet trains which are excellent, and you can see all the wonderful scenery !
Great trip. Unbelievable, from departing 40 minutes late into arriving at final destination 5 minutes late. The window blind is bit annoying, but at least it can be opened. Next I think you should try another Double deck sleeper outside Europe like Superliner or Sunrise Express.
We did have 2+ hours as a planned stop so they should have caught up lol. Ironically last time I was on the Venice portion of the train, we were on time and the Swiss section was late meeting us. Ironic 🤣
In June 1990, I was a backpacker with my camera and "Let's Go Europe" on a night train from Zurich to Vienna. The stations and the train were small but nice.😊
Excellent video and loved the way you left the written notes about the details of the incidentals of prices and information about lifts stairs and escalators long enough to read them 😊😊🎉🎉 Thank you again
Last Thursday I travelled from Innsbruck to Amsterdam in a deluxe sleeper. A superb journey with excellent breakfast and very efficient staff. Unfortunately the train left Innsbruck 10 minutes late due to awaiting a connecting train (there is a lot of infrastructure work currently on the Arlberg route) and, having lost it's paths, it arrived in Amsterdam 135 minutes late (very inconvenient for anyone trying to connect to a Eurostar service) This delay seems not to be a rarity on this route as 2 weeks earlier I observed the same train arriving in Amsterdam 100 minutes late. I do not think the delay was down to OeBB - more likely DB. It's a shame that London is not connected to the Nightjet network but I cannot see that happening at anytime in the future - we have a Government intent on restricting travel for anyone but the elite!
A great train journey. Train was fully equipped with all the necessities onboard. The train departed 40 minutes late and reached at the destination only 5 minutes late.
The cabins are very similar to the ones that where used by the CNL (City Night Line) earlier. I really loved to travel by CNL before this service was canceled.

The scenery is sooooooo beautiful from Salzburg on to Innsbruck and Zürich that I would NEVER travel on a night train. I want to see the beautiful Alpine scenery during the daytime all the way. :) I have done this trip several times but always daytime.
Excellent video review! I do miss that part of the world, being stationed in Friedberg and Heidelberg for the US Army. Would love to get back over there someday and do some traveling with JUST my wife...no kids this time lol
I have taken this train on the exact same route in the exact same kind of cabin in one of those double decker wagons with a friend back in 2019. It was an overall horrible experience for both of us. That cabin is sooo extremely small and claustrophobic when two persons are occupying it. The top bed, which is retracted in this video but was folded out on our trip since we were two, hangs so low that you can barley sit on the other, lower bed because when you do, the top bed is slamming right into your neck, making it very uncomfortable to sit on the lower bed. You kinda have too sit in a very awkward position. We tried to retract the top bed ourselves so we can at least sit in a human way until it's time for bed but it's literally impossible to retract the top bed without the assistance of the attendant. We asked him if he could retract the bed for the time being so we can normally sit, but he told us that it's a lot of work to do so (and as we learned later on, it is a lot of work) and that he doesn't see the point in doing so because he would've had to fold it back out in a couple of ours anyway when we go to sleep. But he offered us to stay in his cabin (the attendants have their own cabin but with regular seats instead of beds) until we go to sleep and this kinda saved our experience since we were now at least able to sit in a normal position until bed time. There's also zero room for luggage in the cabin. You have some kind of a locker were you have enough space to put handbags into it, but that's it. There wasn't any space underneath the bottom bed because some supporting metal structure is there to hold the bed, that makes it impossible to store anything underneath the bed. So we somehow cramped my suitcase underneath the unnecessary sink and my friends smaller travel-bag at the end of my bed (yes i had to sleep mit less space on my bed because i had to share it with a travel-bag). We could've left my friends travel-bag on the floor but since the cabin was so small there wasn't much floor left. We certainly would've stepped on it every time we enter our cabin or when we get out of our beds. Yes, you read that correctly: Two suitcase are enough to cover most of the floor-area, that isn't occupied by the bottom bed. That's how ridiculously small the cabin is. Now the positives: The beds are pretty comfortable and the attendant was very friendly and truly concerned about our comfort and he did let us use his cabin so we have it comfortable until bed time. In the morning he retracted that top bed so we can normally sit and eat our breakfast and this is where we learned that retracting that top bed really isn't an easy move. It requires many steps and quit a bit of time. So we weren't mad at him for denying our request to retract the bed before. Price: If you're travelling with a friend, it costs 150€/Person. For that super small and claustrophobic cabin, this is definitely overpriced. That tiny breakfast in the morning, that will leave a grown man hungry for sure, doesn't make up for that major inconvenience. I guess it's much nicer if you're occupying a cabin by yourself and the top bed is retracted, however you have to buy two tickets than to make sure you don't end up sharing your tiny cabin with some stranger. So 300€ just to have this tiny cabin on your own. That's too much as well. My advice: Just by a normal Ticket and save your money. It's not worth the price at all.
Thank you for sharing this nice video ? Ein Hoch auf die Nachtzüge. Vivent les trains de nuit. I love the night trains.
Hey, great video, but I do have one question: Why does the price for one bed in a 6-bed couchette vary that much between different currencies? As you wrote it, it costs 69,90€, but $161,19. That seems a bit odd to me...
The standard sleeper is not recommended if you are travelling with anything bigger than a small rucksack. Very poorly designed and thought through. I travelled on one recently with a friend and it was very cramped. Not enough room for two people to stand up at the same time.
Beautiful video! In my own travels to Europe many years ago, I loved the train rides, and always the windows at the back as the train pulled away, shedding a tear or two, because I never knew when I would be back, since I live far away from Europe, and trips are expensive, especially now. And the best views were (and I think still are) those of the Austrian Alps, and the beautiful countryside scenery of northern Switzerland and southern Germany... Thank you for your wonderful videos!
I travelled on these coaches when they were brand new in 1997. I tried both the Standard room, the Deluxe room and the Familly room (the one with 4 beds). As many others have said, the Standard rooms are way too small. A single suitcase can easily take up most of the floor space in the room. I couldn't see it clearly on the video, but these coaches originally had storage space for luggage underneath the stairs of each compartment, but I think they were dropped later on due to theft. The familly room was slightly better. It is situated right over the bogie, so it's a little bit noisy compared to the other compartments. It's pretty much a couchette room, but with sleeping car service. The deluxe room however is AMAZING. Hands down the best sleeper compartment you can get in the EU. It was a real shame you didn't get to book one.
I disagree. I think the deluxe on the other European double-decker sleeper - the VR Finnish Railways is better (that's not saying the NJ isn't very good though). Where the NJ is better is that breakfast is inluded whereas on the VR service it's not (It's my only complaint about the VR service which at least does have a proper restaurant car - and served fantastic Swedish meatballs too!)
I agree about the space situation. I made a few times Zurich-Hamburg and Zurich-Vienna with NJ (former CNL). Travelling alone is OK with the Standard room. But I would never order a Standard room again for a couple. First it is somehow claustrophobic (if you are keen to that) and 2nd, you have no chance to store luggage for a 2-3 week stay for 2 persons into that tiny compartment. It was completely unconfortable for two. Will give a try to the Luxury room for 2 next time, to check the situation regarding the luggage.
In my oppinion those sleeping coches are very tight. So unless you are travelling in a solo cabin, is not very good. And on the other hand, the prices for solo cabin it is quite expansive in my oppinion. The food and other things are good on Nightjet.
This was an excellent night train trip from Vienna to Zurich. In 2018, I took a train ride round trip between Zurich and Vienna. The first train from Zurich to Kitzbuhel, Austria and the second train from Kitzbuhel to Vienna. The return rail trip was from Vienna and Bludenz, Austria. Due to track construction, I had to ride a bus from Innsbruck to Bludenz. I resumed the rail journey from Bludenz to Sargans, Schweiz to Zurich HB
The major downside to the Vienna train station is that it has zero air circulation and gets incredibly stuffy in summer. It also is overheated in winter.
I often take this train in both directions as I live in Western Austria and my business leads me to Vienna several times. For me it‘s a good possibility to avoid hotel accommodation and save time. I enter the train in the evening and in the next morning I leave it well rested and ready to work…
Well having gone directly from Thibault's Simply Railways video showing his journey from Edirne to Villach, yours is a pleasant change and one which I would consider taking myself. I also like the idea that you didn't endanger yourself by using Thibault's decapitation video technique. I guess you were prevented from doing so because the windows couldn't open.
Haha yeah I did try and get my camera out my my hands are too big. Although yesterday I was on a Malaysian train where the doors were open the whole way 😂😂😂
3:11 that looks so well stocked. I visited the OBB lounge back on 29th July and there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Some cheese and ham sandwiches and warm orange juice/warm water - i guess the fridge had broke? I coudlnt read the sign
Great Video! And thank you so very much for your kind words about Vienna Main Station and the Nightjet Train, really appreciate them!. Kindest Regards from Vienna,Wolfgang -)

Yeah absolutely 😊 I agree the day trains are spectacular, but that doesn't help to make a Nightjet review 😂 thank you Anthony 🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing this video. Comparing the Central Stations between Zurick and Vienna, Vienna´s is outstanding! A very nice experience!
You're welcome 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Hopefully soon will try nightjet from Vienna as I live in Zürich, or maybe to Hamburg as well , looks so tempting
Definitely worth it 🤠
Great trip. Unbelievable, from departing 40 minutes late into arriving at final destination 5 minutes late. The window blind is bit annoying, but at least it can be opened. Next I think you should try another Double deck sleeper outside Europe like Superliner or Sunrise Express.
Maybe one day... Asia first 😀
We did have 2+ hours as a planned stop so they should have caught up lol. Ironically last time I was on the Venice portion of the train, we were on time and the Swiss section was late meeting us. Ironic 🤣
Also nice to ride is finnish double deck nighttrains! Smoothest ride I ever had.
Slack time
In June 1990, I was a backpacker with my camera and "Let's Go Europe" on a night train from Zurich to Vienna.
The stations and the train were small but nice.😊
Super Video! Daumen hoch! Liebe Grüsse
Once again informative. Did you know a man I know who travels on trains does wees down the sink 😂 instead of going to the toilet.😮
Wtf!!
Detailed and clear expression🙏 Thx for ur devotion😘 I tried the app mentioned by comments section, amazingly it is 💥super save🤩
Glad you found emthe video helpful!!!
I never heard a double-decker train in austria before😊
Well, here you are 🤣
Excellent video and loved the way you left the written notes about the details of the incidentals of prices and information about lifts stairs and escalators long enough to read them 😊😊🎉🎉
Thank you again
Glad you liked it! 😁
Oh wow what a mess 🤣
What time were you allowed to check in to board the train in Innsbruck?
Das ist Toll ! Vielen Danke. Aus Brasilien Markos.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great review of Night Jet. Accommodations looked comfy.
Thanks Max😀😀💚💚
Thanks Scott ☺️
Amazing clip. Like it
Many thanks 🙏🏻
I caught a train from Zurich to Cologne in 1976. Zurich Station is still recognisable!
I bet things have changed a bit!
@@NonstopEurotrip amazingly little! Screens, of course. But the old buildings can still be seen.
@@NonstopEurotrip btw, Zurich Station was in a James Bond movie, but I can't remember which one.

Amazing Journey.
Very informative n well covered
Breakfast looked good and fresh
It was!
A great train journey. Train was fully equipped with all the necessities onboard. The train departed 40 minutes late and reached at the destination only 5 minutes late.
Yep 😁
at 7:07 the beat matches the cities the train travels through. Found that amazing
I'd love to say it was on purpose 😂
Super video! Nice train ride! Good work! Thumbs Up
All the best from Dublin
Andrew
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew ☺️
The cabins are very similar to the ones that where used by the CNL (City Night Line) earlier. I really loved to travel by CNL before this service was canceled.
Same coaches 😀
I wish to travel from Salzburg to Amsterdam via sleeper service so this video was very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Great review of night jet
Thanks 🙏🏻
Travel is a joyful thing

I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏🏻
All those muzzles.
?
The scenery is sooooooo beautiful from Salzburg on to Innsbruck and Zürich that I would NEVER travel on a night train. I want to see the beautiful Alpine scenery during the daytime all the way. :) I have done this trip several times but always daytime.
I've done both, many times.
Fun video! My son and his girlfriend took the train from Vienna to Salzburg this past Summer, so it was nice to "travel along" with him!
Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Excellent video review! I do miss that part of the world, being stationed in Friedberg and Heidelberg for the US Army. Would love to get back over there someday and do some traveling with JUST my wife...no kids this time lol
Well make it happen 😂 but seriously, it's very special 🙂
At 18:53 Im guessing these cars with the SBB panorama car is EC 163 for Graz, the TransAlpin. Departs at 840. Hope to be on it in early October.
Or EC8 to Hamburg?
@@NonstopEurotrip might be but would it include the OBB restaurant and first class coach?
@@raleighsheffield841 no, only SBB coaches. it's EC 163 to Graz. but EC 8 would be perfect for a Trip Report on the Panorama Coach
Doing this trip on Friday night. Really excited about it.😊
Hope you enjoy it!
@@NonstopEurotrip Thank you!
When you think about cargo-trains, they have sometimes 40 coaches. a lot of ppl can potentially be transported overnight.
cool video
😎😎😎
We had very different experiences 😆
Thank you for sharing this nice video ? Ein Hoch auf die Nachtzüge. Vivent les trains de nuit. I love the night trains.
I would love to go
Dream big ✴️
@@NonstopEurotrip in that case Orient Express
Hey, great video, but I do have one question: Why does the price for one bed in a 6-bed couchette vary that much between different currencies? As you wrote it, it costs 69,90€, but $161,19. That seems a bit odd to me...
Typo, sorry 😜
@@NonstopEurotrip Oh, okay. No worries haha
The standard sleeper is not recommended if you are travelling with anything bigger than a small rucksack. Very poorly designed and thought through. I travelled on one recently with a friend and it was very cramped. Not enough room for two people to stand up at the same time.
True yeah. I found it cosy travelling alone although there is space under the bottom bed for suitcases 🙂
That is very elaborate👍 Plus England rail ticket now has a discount😮
I have a rather large nutsack, so I assume it would be uncomfortable?
Beautiful video! In my own travels to Europe many years ago, I loved the train rides, and always the windows at the back as the train pulled away, shedding a tear or two, because I never knew when I would be back, since I live far away from Europe, and trips are expensive, especially now. And the best views were (and I think still are) those of the Austrian Alps, and the beautiful countryside scenery of northern Switzerland and southern Germany... Thank you for your wonderful videos!
Ah hopefully you can come back one day 🙂
Very nice & informative
Yeah I was disappointed too! Next time 🙂
I agree to a certain extent. If travelling alone they are quite cosy ☺️
Ah sounds like a good adventure 😊

The major downside to the Vienna train station is that it has zero air circulation and gets incredibly stuffy in summer. It also is overheated in winter.
I never found it that bad tbh

Like a hotel room!
Absolutely yes 😊
I often take this train in both directions as I live in Western Austria and my business leads me to Vienna several times. For me it‘s a good possibility to avoid hotel accommodation and save time. I enter the train in the evening and in the next morning I leave it well rested and ready to work…
That really is the main point of sleepers imo
Really enjoyed the video . Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Steve 😄
Oh no, how terrible!
i booked a private compartment in the Salzburg-Paris nightjet in 2 months and i cant wait as its gonna be my first time sleeping in a train !
Excellent ☺️👌🏻
Great Video! And thank you so very much for your kind words about Vienna Main Station and the Nightjet Train, really appreciate them!. Kindest Regards from Vienna,Wolfgang -)
You're very welcome! I mean every word 🙏🏻
Beautiful journey. Beautiful places. Thanks for all.
Thank you ☺️
