OBB knock it out of the park yet again. NightJet has almost single-handedly saved overnight rail travel in Europe. What a great product.

I wish SNCF and RENFE would get on board and take sleeper trains seriously again. I love RENFEs Trenhotel, but they've been cutting the routes so much. The west of Europe really has been left out. A Brussels/Koln to Barcelona/Madrid sleeper would be amazing. (either using high-speed lines, or a Talgo set on regular track). There's a TGV Brussels to Perpignan but only as a day train which is a real time-waster, and hardly a comfortable journey, and having to do that *then* change again to an onward train is absurd in the 21st century. We want a god damn sleeper with a god damn shower and a nice menu with those nice fluffy rolls you get on Nightjet, godammit. Oslo to Frankfurt/Berlin is a real missing link too - Norway really has fallen off the map.

"NightJet has almost single-handedly saved overnight rail travel in Europe". Pardon? In *Western* Europe. Sleeper trains have never been interrupted in Nordic, Central and Eastern Europe. I don't know why West Europeans always believe that Europe is limited to their part of the continent

They need dining cars, or at least bar cars, but otherwise they seem pretty luxurious for modern trains! I only hope the windows will be openable for a long time to come; it should be required by law. :-D

As far as I know, the confirmation of delay (27:30) is not only so that you can justify yourself to your employer or something. With 120 minutes delay or more, according to the European Rail Passenger Rights, you are also entitled to a refund of 50% of the ticket price.

@@dazlebluefrogify To avoid such problems you should book the entire trip with the same company. I had a journey from Nice to Brussels. Nice to Paris by SNCF, Paris to Brussels with Thalys. But I booked everything with SNCF. The Nice to Paris night train was cancelled, and so I missed my Thalys train. But SNCF then gave me a ticket for the next Thalys. If I had booked the Paris to Brussels train with Thalys, I would have had to pay for a new ticket.

As someone living in Germany, I can safely say that rail service in Austria feels superior. In my experience the Railjet/Nighjet trains have always had functioning wifi and air conditioning, and the stations throughout the country feel far more modern than Germany. Hope that in the coming years the DB goes through a large scale modernization of its stations and infrastructure.

    • @scrambaba
      @scrambaba 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Actually, it is the “modernizing” of DB that is the problem. Unlike OBB, the politicians and managers in Germany demand that DB act in the way they think a private corporation should act, to pursue profit. So everything DB does is focussed on getting an outcome as cheaply as possible. So they give minimum service, minimum repairs to their trains, minimum amenities to passengers, minimum customer service, minimum comfort on trains, minimum track servicing. Instead of focussing funds on core operations, they spend grandiose amounts on megaprojects like the new Stuttgart station and putting in high speed rail everywhere, even though it is massively expensive and isn’t needed by 95% of passengers. They also drain their funds on corporate empire building by acquiring companies in other countries. Now they don’t even buy loks from German companies anymore, instead they are buying them from Spain. Overall, DB is the ugliest collision between a once-glorious train service and extreme neoliberalism.
Thank God, OBB and SBB have not been so badly infected by this deforming disease as DB and seem to have more sensible and grounded leadership.

Tried the NJ in September. We arrived in Vienna 45 minutes late, which was ok, but during the night, we had no electricity. That means no light, no water, no flushing toilet and no air conditioning or even fresh air. That spooked me in the tiny Deluxe jail cell, so I went looking for an attendant somewhere in the train twice. They couldn't fix it, but somehow everything worked again at 4h40. I filed a complaint and half of our ticket was refunded for the technical breakdown. The delay of 45 minutes wasn't enough. Would like to try the NJ again though.

You need to know, that this day, a huge flooding in the west of Germany between Aachen and Cologne, the south of the Netherlands and Belgium occured, that destroyed many railroad track, as towns and did cost many lives. A 2 hour deleay is more than reasonable for this trip. Your train also might be the last train on the track between Cologne and Aachen before it got destroyed before the huge flood occured. The rain destroyed a lot in that region and your video might show the last appearance of the old tracks.

just a few adjustments to your videoblog: the tables from your cabin are not supposed to be stored where they are now. the breakfast in included in the price. it has already been paid for. however, a certain amount of items are included. any extras are available at cost. a refill is free in sleepingcar, however it must be either coffee or tea.

Back in 1999 i took the CNN City Night line train from Vienna to Cologne, luxury single cabin with dawn feather blankets, shower in cabin and bathrope and private breakfast incl. Champagne. The round trip ticket costed 750 DM back then the equivalent of 750 Euros today with inflation considered. I'll never forget that luxury night ..there was even a bar/nightclub car on the train. Perfect experience!

Right. I once took a night train from Paris to Castelnaudary. Since Castelnaudary was the first stop, we arrived already at 5.40 am, on a public holiday in November. Imagine being in the station of a completely deserted small town in the dark, with the first train leaving only two hours later.

With an arrival time of 10.00., the alternative would be an early morning flight at 7.30 or 8.00 catching which would mean getting up at 5.00-5.30 to get to the airport and deal with security. I don’t like early starts and prefer to arrive the evening before. Otherwise it is a choice between a short night at home and early start or longer sleep time in a bunk.

It's fun to see how almost every European rail company has stopped running night trains because they are unprofitable, and ÖBB is expanding it all over Europe because they can run it with a profit, even without subsidies.

no. they cant. on certain particular lines they might get +- 0. but overall this is the result of a countryvhaving the interest in establishing a rail communication network because it benefits them. öb where asked ti expand in to the nordics but as there where no subsidies available at the time they declined.

@@johndoe1909 Too long distances with too few inhabitants. And restrictive rules for trains in the two tunnels to and from Zealand. It's much better to focus on continental routes.

I agree with the last part. I used to take the night train from Milan to Brussels in the 1990s. Arriving at 7.00, I used to pass the time in the wonderful Metropole Hotel drinking coffee and reading newspapers before the city woke up. Sadly those trains do not exist any longer and the Metropole also closed its doors due to Covid and the side effects of pedestrianisation.
