The think tank “Onward” is the origin of all this compulsory national service stuff being pushed by Sunak at the moment. Transparency is needed urgently.
Yeah that's an absolute hoot. 30,000 fulltime (paid?) placements with selected branches of the military and associated services for those deemed 'the best and brightest' so totally not little tarquin, son of the duke of fuckminster or Sir Twat-Bowles, donor to the tory party. Then on the other hand, mandatory unpaid labour for the rest, the poors, the unwanted and undesirables in various sectors that, let's be real, cannot stand to have significant extra untrained people in. They'll be more of a hazard than anything else.

Incorrect. Think tanks "think" basically conduct research that may be useful in informing governments in creating policy. They may also attempt to advocate for there ideas so support politicians that agree with them with donations.
This is different to lobbying were you attempt to persuade politicians, and it may not be from research.
Both lobbying and think tanks are an important part of democracy. Sure there are a few bad examples of both but generally the benefits outway the negatives.

Liz likes the think tanks because that leaves the thinking to someone else and makes her job a lot easier than actually having to come up with her own policy ideas

Politicians who force the "poors" into poverty should be forced to live via their own rotten meds theyre so happy to prescribe as long as its someone else
They only do that because they are confident they will never be subjected to the poverty they impose on others.
Accountability needs to be had. If politicians won't police their own then citizens need to start holding these things accountable.

Oh it is. Modern politics has basically been a slow-ish road towards legalizing corruption and bribery and just calling it different stuff so most people don't notice. Citizens United was pretty much the SC saying "Yeah, I guess unlimited bribery by corporations interested in outright buying the government is fine!"

Thanks for an interesting and well-researched piece. I've looked at the Think Tank incest but never how it connects with outside organisations (so all of the Cross-pollination of staff and transferring funds from big Think Tanks to smaller ones, often internationally).
The ADF ("Alliance Defending Freedom"), a US Christian Nationalist Think Tank that employed the current US House Speaker and contributor to the "Legal Challenge" attempt to overthrow the 2020 Election, for example spends millions in Africa and Europe on anti-Gay, anti-Trans, anti-Abortion Right wing fundamentalists. So now I have a whole *other* side of it that I want to understand.
You can't understate just how awful these groups are, and people like you raising awareness like this is genuinely awesome!

Not sexy, but it is extremely important. Your average punter needs to understand these guys. If they did, I think they’d trust politicians a lot less.
A think tank is a group of rich guys that are hired by other rich guys that pay the think tank rich guys to think up ways to recommend policies that will make the rich guys even richer, preferably with government money and contracts😮
Think Tanks also allow the presenting of idea on talk shows etc without a government having to chuck in a minister.
If a minister came out with some of this stuff it would be jumped on. A think tank however can say it, judge the reaction etc.

The bottom line is that the Charities Commission is set up to regulate cat shelters and orphanages, not politically powerful groups funding by almost limitless pots of wealth.
The Think Tanks simply have more power than the regulator. There needs to be a separate regulator to prevent this stuff, and a robust system of laws and regulations that prevent Think Tanks for acting in the way they do. This is unlikely to happen because the current situation is financially beneficial to politicians. It's like residential rental reform being unlikely because of how many MPs are landlords.

You're making a compelling case for option 2: Any meetings held between government employees and think tanks must be held in an approved meeting room (with said meeting rooms being fitted with cameras and microphones).
