This is not specific to this video. Most episodes are not available in India (probably because they don't have a very big audience in India.)
I worked in the Indian embassy in Estonia for exactly one day, left in tears lol. One of the things I did wrong was referring to Modi as... well, Modi. Got yelled at and called an imbecile. Apparently I should have said something like his excellency the high and mighty blah blah blah Narendra Modi. The ambassador was like "do you refer to your own president just by his name?" and I kind of stared at him and said "yes, cause... that's his name" to which he said maybe it's a cultural difference cause "india is a country of very high culture" unlike estonia clearly lmao. It sucked at the time, but looking back I can see it was an interesting experience and makes for a fun anecdote. Anyway, I just felt this tiny vindictive sense of satisfaction every time John said "Modi" hahaa.

As someone living in India and using VPN to watch this episode, I can agree with almost all of what John Oliver said about India and its leadership in this show. The good news is that the BJP has done way worse in the elections than projected, way, way worse. They don’t even have enough for a majority, let alone for a super majority. Congress has done way better than expected. The bad news is that the BJP can still form a ruling coalition, but for once in more than a decade, it at least shows that Modi’s power is weakening. How dare he say that he stopped Russia’s war in Ukraine while shaking hands with Putin for his oil and gas. Oh and PS, John Oliver, still waiting for you to do an episode on Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine. It’s been 10 years into the war and nothing about Russia’s actions minus a few sentences.

On top of that, I’m not talking about Putin, I’m talking about Russia’s war crimes, which is more than just one figure and his authoritarianism. I couldn’t care less about the recent one he did about Carlson in Russia. There are actual war crimes being committed for 10 years: torture, deportations, decapitations, which are far more important than a dude sucking up to Putin, who is trying to show a Russian grocery store as being the paradigm of development.

Quick update from India ( although my VPN is routed through war free Ukraine 😆 ) The BJP managed to win only around 240 seats, a number much lower than they expected / predicted and not sufficient to form a majority government without assistance from their allies in the NDA.
Ironically, they didn't win from the constituency where they constructed the above mentioned 200 million dollar temple either.

Giving bags of grain to poor people was not even his scheme or his govt.'s scheme. It was started by former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Dr. Singh introduced a bill in the parliament - "Right to food" and started a govt fund to feed poor people by giving them 5 kg free grains per month. He is taking credit for his work by putting his photo on the grains and spreading rumors that he introduced it. His "Godi Media" (media bought by Modi) helped him spread wrong and false information that he is giving grains to people.
this food distribution program John discusses, is not something that Modi started. The food security bill was passed by last government. It mandated the grain supply. Modi only increased the number of benificiaries during COVID lock down. Since then it stayed that way. Now he has to provide it because Modi' policies made people so poor that its thier only hope to stay alive. and they scared to vote against him because Modi tells them that if they do they will lose it. Modi has taken people hostage.
