According to accounts of his campaigning to be an MP in Fife, he drove around in a Rolle Royce (with his Nanny). He was standing in an area which had some pockets of depravation, and his snooty behaviour riled the locals to the extent they threatened to beat him up. The sitting Labour MP at the time persuaded them not to, saving Rees-Moggs skin.
To me, for all his money, politeness, supposed “class” and superior education, there are things about him which are sinister and need questioning. He professes to be a devout Catholic, yet his love of wealth and the fact he openly displays this, is totally against the teachings of Christ. His voting record as an MP shows he regularly votes against Bills which would benefit the poor. Maybe he shuns publicity but you never hear of him donating some of his vast wealth to Charity, it would be interesting to hear if he does. So for me, he is a wolf pretending to be a sheep, not in his position as an MP on merit, not rich because he is clever, worked hard and earned it. He is what he is, and where he is by virtue of his birth and the wealth accrued by his father. The real schism for me is that he stands in one of the poorest areas in the Country, a bit like the one in Fife. Sadly the yokels of Somerset do not appear the have to savvy of the Scots, they like many areas in England are taken in by the notion that wealth “trickles down” from the rich to the poor, which is akin to the notion that pigs can fly.

    • @jimduffy1967

We are not all Rees-Moggs (note the lack of a grocer's apostrophe there), but those that are, I understand. So, some hard facts: The arrogance of the Tory Party, which has always been led by Rees-Moggs (note the lack, etc.) arises in goodly part from the knowledge that the British - maybe I should better say, English - Great Unwashed always voted Tory. There was a blip when the Socialists won over the industrial proletariat in the 1930's , but that was crushed by Margaret of Sacred Memory, and their sprogs of Red Wall fame now turn out once more in their smelly masses to vote for the Natural Party of Government, just as their great grandparents did. It will happen again in 2024, which is why little Starmer is working his socks off trying to reinvent the Gladstone vote. I repeat that I'm not a Rees-Mogg, but I know pretty exactly where his insufferable smugness comes from.

AND A GRADE ONE TORY TAX DODGER!!!

    • @andycapp8843

Victor Charles Evans. How would you grade every self employed tradesman/woman/transgender that reduces the cost to the customer if paid in cash and then goes on to pocket the funds and not enter one single penny in his trading ledgers? A grade one fraudster, a grade one thief or a grade one ? You steal a penny, you are a thief. You steal one million pounds and you remain a thief. How easy it is to be a hypocrite. If an educated individual makes a considerable amount of cash and is skilful in legally reducing the tax payable, best not to blame the entrepreneur but incompetence of the government that creates the tax legislation alongside HMRC who fail to advise accordingly and collect the taxes due.

Not in any way a supporter of this man, his outlook or his disdain for those who sustain the very Britain he claims to love.
However he has a fundamental human right to express his faith views in public . I have that same right, although mine are very different to those of Mr Rees Mogg.
It would be much more apposite to assess his views on poverty and wealth against the actual teachings of Jesus. However Jesus's teachings on wealth are sparse. (Camel through the Eye of the Needle)
He, Jesus, in his time on earth, was more concerned with righteousness, doing what is right in an way - something which humans have failed to do through all history. This leads to the Christian Gospel, thank God.
Views on other aspects of life, such as marriage, especially homosexual marriage, are often shared between Roman Catholic, Evangelical Protestant and Islam among others. They are an easy thing to castigate someone with, until we see that our Christian or Muslim friend has this same view of how their own society works, perhaps expressed in a mild way for us to receive their views as part of a multicultural society.
Respect for religious beliefs and practices is part of the UN Convention on Human Rights to which Mr Rees Mogg has a claim, as have all citizens of Earth.
Ironically, for a History graduate, certain reforms had to take place before Roman Catholics, and Protestant Dissenters (in England), could take seats in the very traditional English/British/United Kingdom Parliament.
As a UK citizen I'm embarrassed by this man. Just as as a Scot I'm embarrassed by George Galloway. The answer is to get together and struggle for proper trade union rights, real equal pay, proper nationalisation of public infrastructure; and show them to be the weak and narcissistic persons which they are.
    This is important.

I don't think he's a fool. From what I have seen of him lying at great length, he is an arrogant, selfish, immoral person who will do anything that is in the interests of investors, notably including his support of Brexit. I'm Canadian and I've seen him calmly and intelligently lie directly in ways that serve him and the rich. Actually, in some ways I dont mind his liking for his nanny because often people in his position receive no love or emotional support from their parents and it is probably his nanny was much more a true loving parent to him than either of his birth parents.

Oh him being a fool isn't the worst part, being a constant malicious liar is much worst. But it's less on him and more about the system where both a clear fool and a liar get to be in such a high position. He may seem like a fool most of the time but he is smart enough to understand one thing. That he doesn't need to understand anything, learn anything in the system, he only ever have to keep lying and have money.
He, like Boris Johnson would never change because thus far, all that they do have bought them wealth and success. So why should they ever change?
