The relationship Jon had with Earl Hamner was special. While music does tend to bring people together, Earl once stating how Jon looked more like him than his own son was no doubt another reason he loved Jon.

Seems so. And I also got the impression is he had a special relationship with Ricard Thomas as well.

Hi Shyman - Was that from the American Heritage TV interview? Earl Hamner seems to be a soft-spoken man and when he spoke about The Waltons - and the cast during the interview, he was so enthusiastic and you can see how honest, assertive, and caring he was. 😇😇

I think the release is perfect timing. We are living in tumultuous times and need music/stories like this. I say this knowing earlier this year The Waltons was the number 1 watched show on cable TV.

Judy, Jon told me once that in 1972, he had" a feeling in his bones that "The Waltons" would be a long term gig." He was right!

Jon is such a kind and respectful man. Hearing him tell the story about the process involved in making the CD was so wonderful. I'm happy Jon & Earl's family decided now is the time to release it. We need Earl's stories & soothing voice in today's times. And to have it come out at Xmas too--how special! Im headed overto Jon's website to get my copy! Thanks to you & Jon for sharing!

Jon was so thoughtful to wait to release the CD and asked his son before moving forward. It will be much more appreciated now. Earl was a wonderful story teller. I’m glad The Waltons was produced and it’s still around, thankfully. Younger people are interested in and it’s not just the old folks. It was gentler time and a comfort to watch. Jon has been into music from the beginning and I knew he would be a great musician. Thanks for the interview!❤

A Joyful Noise will be a perfect Christmas gift for a friend! It was a stroke of Genius to open The Homecoming (and each episode of The Walton's) with Earl Hammer narrating! Everything about the opening pan of the snow-covered mountain, the sound of the wind, and the incredible music is so evocative and inviting. Earl had such a lovely voice and charm. His narration made The Homecoming more than a movie; it became a literary event. Thank you so much for following up with the production of A Joyful Noise and for sharing with us fans that Scott Hamner approves of the project! That means a lot. Is it too early to wish you a Merry Christmas? Well, then, Merry Christmas to you both and Waltons and Hamners everywhere! ❤✨💚✨🎄✨🙏✨🕊️

My Grandmother was Baptist and played piano and organ at Church during Depression. The whole family played something. I knew Dad played guitar while I was growing up as one was on the wall. At 45, I discovered he had played the fiddle in Church. He was 92 when we discovered Dad played piano. Now I play/sing for Memory Care folks. Thanks 4 the Memory.

I had a question I thought of when I was watching episodes from season 9 last night. How difficult was it to work with actors that replaced long time actors? Like Curt and John-boy. I remember watching when John-boy was in a coma and mama kept saying his name to try to wake him up and I said, “He won’t wake up, it’s not John-boy!!” Much respect to Robert Wightman, I just had fun with that.

    Very nice interview.
I appreciate how you let your guests elaborate without multiple interruptions.
Too many interviewers out there arent skilled or confident enough to share the microphone.
Buts that’s how we get to know your subjects better.
Also if I didnt know you and Jon worked together in the past I’d deduce it anyway by the way you both kind of cue each other when your “part” is done. 😄

I remember watching The Homecoming with Patricia Neal. My family looked forward to watching that and the Thanksgiving special every season. The iconic opening theme song. The closing Earl Hamner monologue and the characters wishing each other goodnight. Grandpa and John Walton. That show brought feelings of warmth and safety into our living room every week. What a triumph. You were lucky to have been part of it.

Jon Walmsley/Jason Walton, all i can tell you in reguard to the Earl Hamner CD is that I love when the Waltons sing the classic hymns in church . Sometimes it is an extended full length version of the whole hymn! Wow. I grew up in the Episcopal over Baptist church and I am familiar with all of them. AsI will play Jason's personal songs over & over so I roll the tape back on all the old time hymns.

I also want to say that Mr. Earl Hamner left us such a legacy, from his life’s humble beginnings at the Oak Ridge Mountains in beautiful Virginia to our beloved Waltons tv series, that cannot be denied nor forgotten. I cherish and will continue to cherish all of the gifts that uncle Hamner left for us. He was and will continue to be a gift to us, like you all are. Love you dear Judy & thank you. I just got goosebumps from this!! So glad I hadn't ordered yet, now I HAVE to get a copy for my sister as well!!! I so, so wish my parents were still alive, they loved Earl's writing, voice, and stories and would have had this cd going all the time. My Daddy grew up in the aftermath of the Depression in the mountains of Virginia!! There were 10 kids in a four room house, his father a coal miner, his mother a saint, and his grandparents lived just a bit further up the mountain from their house....they were the Waltons in every sense!! So many of Earl's stories related to my Dad's family. However, the Waltons were much better off than my Daddy's family but the love and richness of live was there. Thank you for this interview and letting us all know how the cd came into being. I'm so glad Earl left this for all of us. ❤

It is amazing and a comfort the way the cast, the Hamner family and collaborators protect what Earl Hamner gave to us all. It is so very nice that you invite us all to your family reunions and that you are not capitalizing, but rather revisiting and refreshing something that is so special to so many. John Walton as depicted by Ralph Waite is like watching my own grandfather working so hard to feed and protect his large family during the Depression. He presented very similar physical characteristics and point of view according to my mother. Thank you all for all you have contributed to such a warm place in so many lives. I am excited to hear more from Mr Hamner in his own words with such talented accompaniment.

I’m also ordering your Christmas CD tomorrow and getting that for Christmas too! I hope you’ve both had a wonderful day and sending lots of love ❤

I envy his musical ability Judy. I have played guitar for three years and still see myself as a total hack. I've heard him play and it's just incredible. He is a massive talent - as are you. You have a stunning voice that just melts your heart. What a family you have in the Walton's cast. I would say that is probably the greatest treasure you were given. As Desi Arnaz once said (referring to his television show) "I love Lucy is something that happens - once, in a lifetime - IF you are lucky to have it at all'. The Waltons - same thing in my opinion. Thank you for sticking with this channel and for providing this content. It's never taken for granted from me. This is your time and I appreciate it.

Thank you so much. That is so kind of you to say. I think we all recognize that The Waltons was that special sort of magic that only happens rarely and we were so grateful to be a part of it.

Oh yes, that voice at the beginning and end of every episode...I will forever be able to hear it in my head! What a project - TWENTY years in the making...I loved hearing about the path to the release and it is so special that Jon calls it "Earl's CD." I will have to wait to check it out - it is currently unavailable and awaiting new stock! (Which is great - means a lot of people must be going to enjoy this!!) Thank you, Judy and Jon for including us in your conversation!

    Thank you both. ❤

He is one of my favorite Characters and Actors because of his taste in music and especially when he would be playing the one kind of music on the piano and then when the Actress who played Grandma walks in he starts playing an old church hymn. That was hilarious. 😁💖

The people born in the Teens & 20’s (of the 1900’s), who struggled through the depravity, losses & fears throughout the years of The Depression in their childhoods only to face the depravity & fears & horrors of WWII in their teens & beyond … like Mr Hamner… so often counted their blessings with great strength throughout the balance of their lives, considered themselves fortunate & focused on who was in need & what they could do to help others.
I hear that reflected in Mr. Hamner’s comment about his childhood and in his work and his character, as described by you both and by many.
This recording does sound like a beautiful tribute.
I hope we continue celebrating the strength & heart of those born a century ago ~ Mr. Hamner and his contemporaries ~ and carry their gifts to us forward.
A psychologist/sociologist said recently if we choose to build bridges to overcome our polarities in time, the present could become known as “The Regenerative Era”.
I think Earl Hamner, Jr. & many who endured hardships of the past century might like that.
    Thank you Judy & Jon!!

So interesting how something that started out as an idea like a seedling that began to grow and blossom into this wonderful CD. So much good detail was told of the process. Jon has difinately made Earl proud with his families blessing. Interesting to know as well whether the technology has changed with the quality of putting many songs on an album. Albums are making a come back, let's see if the technology got better as well.
