    For all the naysayers, I tried it and it works. In my experience, the oven thermometer was not accurate because the entire thing needs to be inside the oven. I used a meat thermometer and poked it through the side. My parts are cured so thank you!

    I know this is old and a lot of the comments are sarcasm about how dangerous it is but it does work. I used a method like this to bake open my headlights. However, instead of putting the hole for the heat gun in the top, I put it on the side and made it big enough to where the heat gun nozzle doesn't make contact with the box. The heat gun pointed up diagonally, away from the headlights. I also didn't line it with foil but it still worked without a problem and I didn't leave it unattended.

    I learned how to do this in boy scouts. Had a couple coals in the bottom. Baked a whole cake in 15 mins.

    Doing wheel Drums? Just prop a heat gun.
    1. lay drums on top of eachother, separated by some type of thin spacer (i use 2 wood shims). you simply want the hollow space between drums.
    2. point the heat gun through the middle axle hole on top. might need to prop the handle with something.
    No need to cover any holes or gaps. No need to cover it. Drums easily reach 200F. Temp adjustable gun could help, as well.

    Is the glue that you applied is used also for sealing the box or it just to hold the aluminum?if it just to hold the foil,can i use thumbtacks instead?Thanks.

    • @craighaggart
      @craighaggart ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not the person who posted the video, but I believe I can verify that the glue is for holding the foil in place and generally keep it from sagging into the "oven" space. A few dabs here and there would suffice. You could use thumbtacks, but remember that if you do, the sharp points will be sticking OUT and might poke through the outside if the cardboard is thin. The box just needs to hold hot air inside well enough to do the job, so a really good seal is not super critical.

    It's a great idea. How long should I keep the pieces of fairings inside and at what heat, to have a nice banking and hardening of the coats, especially the protective transparent?

    Isn't there a risk to damage the heat-gun,especially when the heat-gun is directed-down inside the box?

    Aren't you worried about cardboard catching fire? For instance at the point where cardboard connects with heatgun?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you wrap it well it should be fine. I do keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case, but I definitely do not recommend leaving it unattended.

    I can see no flaws here, nothing could possibly go wrong. I'd suggest emptying out a pillow into plastic bags, spread about an inch thick and tape them to the box for insulation.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Maybe soak the pillow in gasoline beforehand?

      Its a heat deflector so the heat from the nozzle doesn't directly hit the part.

      The nozzle of the heat gun is about 1000 degrees...friction fitting it into flammable cardboard is an absolutely BRILLIANT idea!! Unbelievable! Oh, wait, my bad, that layer of aluminum foil should make it ok...

    • @paulinadeluca9117
      @paulinadeluca9117 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tmru2b oh yes! Because the 1000 degree tip lit that box on fire right in front of us just now. Good job in trying to sound like you know something but actually making yourself look stupid.

    • @tmru2b
      @tmru2b 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, ok, I'M the stupid one...lol! Cuz the nozzle ISN'T 1000 degrees, and it's not wedged into a CARDBOARD box! And because it didn't catch fire for you it MOST DEFINITELY means it won't! I don't know what I was thinking, you're right, my bad, it's a brilliant idea...!

    • @stevekent6569
      @stevekent6569 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      120 C is 248 F. VHT paint wants one to cure at 650 F . I don't think this box is a solution to that. Auto ignition temp of cardboard is 800 F. That means when it ignites itself. Have no idea what temp the glue goes off.

      @@tmru2b used Mapp torch pointed at aluminum foil protecting wires and heating exhaust nuts. Nuts are off, reaching 1750F and glowing red. Wires are fine behind tin foil. Yep, it works
