  • Meet local musician and performer Ronnie Malley, the star of "Ziryab, the Songbird of Andalusia" at Silk Road Rising. Ronnie discusses a brief history of the oud, an instrument which made its way from Iraq to Cordoba, Spain via Ziryab, a former slave who rose to extraordinary fame in the court of Abdar-Rahman II. Ziryab opened one of the world's first music conservatories and added a fifth string to the oud, the grandfather to the guitar.
Music is a gateway to learning about a culture and its people. Did you know that Dick Dale's famous song "Misirlou," from the film "Pulp Fiction," is a traditional Middle Eastern song? Watch to learn more.
"Ziryab, the Songbird of Andalusia" is written and performed by Ronnie Malley, and runs from February 18 - February 28, 2016 at Silk Road Rising. Learn more and buy tickets at: www.silkroadrising.org

@@Readasaur He heavily influenced and composed some of Andalusian Music of Morocco and Algeria. I'm not aware of any middle-eastern styles still alive today that have been either invented or contributed to by Zyriab. Maybe in the Levant region I would assume, especially Syrian. But I'm not aware of it.

The oud isn't the grandfather of the guitar. Origin of the guitar came from Persian instrument known as the tar. In ancient Persian that instrument was know as chartar which means 4 stringed instrument.

That uood is a very old Kurdish instrument. I believe the Kurdish who mixed with Arabs during Salah all din ayubi (r) and later on marched into south Spain with the Islamic caliphate were who built Cordoba. Probably that's why zriyab migrated there as well , hhh

According to primary source evidence, Ziryab was a black African slave born in Iraq. During the middle ages, Iraq was the center and destination of the east African slave trade. read about the zanj rebellion.

There is actually no evidence to suggest that Ziryab was a slave, he was a black arab that was born in Mosul, Iraq

Ziryab is actually from a Persian or Pashto word. Correct name and pronounciation is Zaryab, literally means "gold liquid" if you translate it from English word for word. Its denoted to attribute something that is rich. Ziryab was born to Persian or Arab parents in Iraq. He actually introduced both the Arabic oud + and the Persian Tar to Cordoba. He was not Black African there is no evidence of such claim.
