    Missirlou was first aired in Athens around 1927 by Dimitris Patrinos, a musician from Smyrni. The song refers to a Christian's love for a Muslim, a theme-taboo for that time and not only. The melody either existed before and was a familiar listening in the wider area of the Ottoman Empire, or it is a group work of Patrinos' band. The only sure thing is that Patrinos wrote the lyrics.
    The international journey of the song began in 1930 by the US, with the release of Orthophonic album by Greek-American Titos Dimitriadis. In 1941 another Greek-American, musician Nikos Roubani changed his tone and melody, giving him the oriental sound he is known today. Make sure he has his name as composer of the song. As no one has disputed this right, Roubani appears as a composer of Misirllos all over the world except for Greece.
    Immediately after the adaptation of Rubanis, the song became part of the repertoire of great swing-era orchestras such as Harry James, Woody Herman and Xavier Kughat. But the great success for Missirlou came in the early 1960s by Surf-Rock artists. At the beginning, guitarist Dick Dale, a Lebanese musician (Richard Mansour's real name), started playing a solo with a single string of guitar. He chose Missirlou to respond to the challenge. In 1963, the great The Beach Boys featured in Surfin 'USA a performance of Dale's song, making Missirlo part of the surf tradition as well as American pop culture.
    In 1994, Missirlou in the performance of Dick Dale came back to the fore as he was listening to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, while in 2006 he became popular as the basis for the Black Eyed Peas, Pump it.

    Dale’s signature guitar style: Most guitars are strung for a right-handed player. Dale, a lefty, originally picked up the guitar upside down so he could play naturally - without restringing the instrument, leaving the thicker strings on the bottom of the fret board. “[N]obody told me I was holding it wrong,”. “I just taught myself to play it like that. It was hard at first.”

      A master at work - this was the first Surf tune I learnt. I was going to note Hendrix was also a lefty (self included) so it seems odd and confusing and does take getting used to, playing a RH Strat 'wrong side up', but when you consider that early UK users had enough probs getting RH ones so lefties just bit the bullet and played RH editions upside down.
      That's where dual rows of tuners (aka Gibson and classic acoustic and jazz guitars style) pays off as you can easily just restring them to suit, but the single row tuners style means much more effort to mod to RH, probably doubles the new cost easily and it's still a comprise - so it's no surprise us lefties just adapted our methods to the guitar rather than pay silly LH guitar prices.
      Most of mine are RH played ass ways up, but two I did manage to get LH'ers at reasonable cost (¹² string 59 Dantone and a Washburn 12 acoustic I modded to dual electric/electroacoustic using parallel outputs - and you still get a proper twangy acoustic sound for mic pickup).
      Us lefties are like continental drivers in RHD countries, oddballs who never look comfortable but if you're good at something, you really beat the odds and excel at it. I guess it's a motivation and necessity driven thing.

    • @christopherblackmur7962
      @christopherblackmur7962 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JK-gm6kk probably lesser known maybe was the bass playing that was a blend of bass/rhythm and lead simultaneously and in various combos by one of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates (signature sound in 'Shakin All Over), now that was another example many tried to copy and failed miserably. But, sometimes a failure generates it's own distinct style - as Wilco Johnson (of Dr Feelgood) developed accidentally trying to mimick that combo style from Johnny Kidd & The Pirates and failing badly as he described his attempt but created a signature sound that's still very distinctive.
      It takes some doing to get such things down smoothly and repeatable, but when you get it - you get it, and as WJ proved, sometimes you get even when you don't get it.
      Add in offhand playing, and an inverted instrument and then you're talking hard+++.

      Still its unique, he might have just been going for the weird look to be different.

    Dick Dale real name is Richard Anthony Monsour, born in Boston, lived in Quincy,
    MA, until 11th grade. Then his father got a job in Cali and the family moved. He was
    NOT born in Lebanon, even though he told people that for years. He was of
    Lebanese and Middle eastern descent and was fascinated by the sounds of that
    style of music, especially the odd scales that are quite different from traditional
    Western scales. Hence, the sound of "Misirlou," taken from a Greek ethnic song.

    • @andream8671
      @andream8671 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually The ORIGINAL song is FROM 1919 by the EGYPTIAN COMPOSITION and song know as "Bint Misr" NOT the 1st cover of the song in 1927 from the Greek Band: "Rempetiki Compania" song know as "Misirlou".

    I saw Dick Dale 3 times, and each time was absolutely fantastic. I was also lucky enough to talk to him each time and can say without doubt what a sweet man and a true gentleman he was, very down to earth. He always made time for fans. The 1st time I talked to him I was pleasantly surprised at what a nice guy he was, so the 2nd time I wanted an autograph all I had was a stub from a Yankee game I saw weeks before, so he graciously signed it. I went and saw him again 4-5 years later, long story short, end of show go up and talk to him with the same stub, he saw his other signature, we had a laugh about it, and he signed the other side saying " Ya know, I remember signing a Yankee stub ".... I was stunned. Anyway, truly one of the greatest.
