    THANK you for mentioning that it MUST be sealed or it will STAIN YOUR CLOTHES!! We were trying to decide whether we should do this or not and I really don't want to seal a project as big as mine. Given that people will definitely be rubbing into the metal made me decide to pass on rusting it. This is a great video. To thank you, I subscribed to your channel.

      Appreciate that! We love our fence - but it would be bad if it wasn't sealed!!

    Wow! What a fantastic idea!!! I will be using it to rust my Wire Art crafts that I make with my homemade jigs. I make Barbed Wire (not sharp) Hearts & Stars on my wooden & nail jigs with galvanized steel wire, and at times I need them to be rusty for my Rustic Wire Art decor ... I don't know if the wire can be rusted with your method, but I will be trying it as soon as the snow melts here in Western PA so I can be outside on my back porch ... Thank you so much sir, and great job on your fence, it looks fantastic!!! ... I'll share your video on my fb page!!! 💗⛄😀

    Owatrol oil is the ideal sealer for this application and indeed any out door steel that’s not galvanised.

      Not that we know of, we seal it with spray, or it does rub on your clothes.

    The sealant you used , did it dry glossy? I rather have a dull appearance.
    Great looking fence !

      @DIYOnTheHouse  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We used a matte finish. Not glossy at all.

      Would you please recommend a sealing product? and would it prevent the steel from changing colors and maybe keep rusting? we tried it and we recognized that the rust keep changing the color daily, so we would like something to lock it once we are happy with the result. @@DIYOnTheHouse

    What will work on galvanized steel ?

    • @DIYOnTheHouse
      @DIYOnTheHouse  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Galvanized is not build to rust. Paint might be the only solution.

    Can I use this method on a metal platter that has a white finish? A small craft project. Also, do you mean hydrogen peroxide or just peroxide? Where do I buy peroxide? Thx.

    • @DIYOnTheHouse
      @DIYOnTheHouse  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It wouldn't work if there is a coating on the metal. It is hydrogen peroxide from the grocery, pharmacy, or box store.

    How can I do this with galvanized steel? Would scrubbing it with steel wool first work?

    • @DIYOnTheHouse
      @DIYOnTheHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      I read a few articles and it says you can rust galvanized. There is 3 different ways to do it. 1. toilet bowl cleaner 2. muriatic acid 3. with the salt, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide solution as in our video. Be careful using the acid!

    Would you mind sharing where you bought the metal? Is it non-galvanized (bare) steel?

    • @DIYOnTheHouse
      @DIYOnTheHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a local steel supply that we picked it up at (Prescott Valley, Arizona). Yes, it was non-galvanized, then we rusted it.

    • @scrunchiiface

      I live in Prescott. Would you mind telling me where the steel supply is?

  • @happinesscompilation5252

    This will attack galvanized but slower. The chemical reaction between vinegar and salt results in hydrochloric acid. This will eat through the zinc coated surface over time.

    • @DIYOnTheHouse

      It should if you first clean the oil residue off with degreaser first.

    I did not have success with this formula. What percent Hydrogen Peroxide did you use? What type of vinegar?

    • @DIYOnTheHouse
      @DIYOnTheHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you type in How to rust metal with hydrogen peroxide in the your search bar on google it will come straight up. The most important thing to do on new metal is to get the oil residue off before rusting.

    I did exactly as you describe but my metal will not rust... At all...

    • @DIYOnTheHouse

      Cleaning the oil off the new metal is crucial. If that was done and the solution mixed correctly. I'm stumped.

  • @FatherandDaughterVibes

    I tried this and it didn’t work. I hand scuffed, clean with rag and soapy water, rinsed off, applied mixture, didn’t work then used electric sander, clean and sprayed again and nothing in 10 mins.

    If you want this look but you don't live in the desert where metal isn't going to rust to nothing you want COR-TEN Steel, which will last lifetimes in wet environments with no paint or coatings.

      @@DIYOnTheHouse You're welcome. I used to sell snow guards from an East Coast manufacturer and Rocky Mountain clients insisted in getting them in mill-finish steel. We always assumed they had a local powder-coater that beat our price. It was years later we found out people with COR-TEN roofs wanted something to rust to match their roof. We were looking into getting COR-TEN stock when I switched jobs.

    • @jasmineali9142
      @jasmineali9142 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      how to make COR-TEN steel? is it a different process?

    • @patrickcorcoran4828
      @patrickcorcoran4828 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jasmineali9142 Its a metallurgical process that's way beyond me, but I doubt it can be done outside a steel mill. Its not a coating, the steel alloy itself is weather resistant and forms a protective layer of rust. Any metal supplier is going to know what you mean when you ask for "Cor-Ten" but the current versions are ASTM A606-4, A588, and A847 weathering steel. I'm fairly sure there are also competing products, since the original Cor-Ten patent has probably run out by now. You'll should be able to find sheet steel and many different types of beams.

    • @harrylane4
      @harrylane4 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      “Aging” might be more accurate here. Rather than eating away deep into the metal like the rust you want to avoid, this is a thin layer of oxidation that makes for a nice aged look

      Hey doofus, of course peroxide and/or vinegar will rust steel. You should remove your comment saying it 'doesn't work' when obviously it will on any ferrous metal that isn't galvanized or certain alloys
