  • The Central Asian Shepherd Dogs are said to be the oldest known group of dogs in existence today, dating back over 5,000 years according to artifacts found in native lands. This is the most popular dog breed in Russia.
The Central Asian Shepherd Dog has been recorded in the Foundation Stock Service since 1996. It has been approved to compete in AKC Companion Events since 2010.This is a working breed of dog.
It is considered a symbol of pride and national heritage in Turkmenistan, where a gold statue of the animal was unveiled in 2020.
The Alabai is a strong, curious, alert, proud and independent dog. It has a short snout with large nostrils, its ears are, in practice, cropped very short and the tail is docked moderately long. Most common colours are black and white, white, a combination of grey, brown, brindle or deep red. They have a short and dense coat which requires very little grooming, but their once-a-year shedding is appropriately called “the fur storm”. Their nails grow very fast and need regular trimming to avoid overgrowth.
Males can reach a height between 65 and 78 cm, while females between 60 and 70 cm with a weight of between 40 and 80kg for an adult Alabai.
Central Asians are extremely large dogs and consume massive amounts of food each day. It is important that their food provide their daily nutritional needs as well as their energy needs. These dogs have a tendency to gain weight if they are overfed, so a regular feeding schedule is necessary, with a limitation on the number of treats, as well. They should be given a single feeding of high-quality dog food or homemade food each day.
A female Alabai can give birth to between 4 and 10 puppies.
Training from an early age is important, in order to teach them to be sociable and obedient. They are very protective to young children if they grow together with them. With strangers, however, they have to be carefully supervised. The breed is highly protective of their family and property, so it can be difficult to bring strangers into the home.
This is not a dog that can be easily raised in an apartment. It needs a large space and daily exercise.
The life expectancy of a Central Asian Shepherd is between 12 and 14 years, even more for well cared for individuals.

4:54 that photo of the white Central Asian shepherd was taken in Ontonagon Michigan. His name is Safar. He only likes his immediate family & no one else. Lives with 4 females. Been there over 100 times & only the two youngest females will tolerate me. They are Ekaterina dogs & she has written a book about this breed. Only book in North & South America about this breed. Fantastic book.
