Top 50 Curiosities about the Platypus
The platypus, together with the echidna are the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live babies. British scientists examined the first platypus in 1799, and they judged it to be a fake, made of several animals sewn together.
The platypus, whose name means flat feet, has a reproductive system that is very much like that of a bird, but it also has mammal glands. It has a beak like a duck’s beak, a tail like a beaver and the feet of an otter. Although it is a mammal, and so it should give birth to live babies to breed, it is the only such animal to lay eggs. It is as big as a domestic cat and only lives in the eastern Australia and Tasmania, in isolated places near lakes or rivers, building lairs among rocks or tree roots.
Its scientific name is Ornithorhynchus anatinus. Males measure between 45 and 65 cm and weigh between 1 and 3 kg, that is between 2 and 6 lbs. Females are a little smaller. The soft and elastic beak of the platypus is very complex, having over 700 000 tactile and electric receptors. At the bottom of the river, the platypus can sense the smallest electrical fields created by the muscular contractions of its prey. This system is called electro location. Its beak is its main connection to the world, as its ears, eyes and nose are hermetically closed. It is 10-15cm wide and very flexible.
The platypus reproduces after a short period of hibernation. The female digs a 60 cm hole in order to lay 2 to 3 eggs measuring 1.5cm in diameter each. Incubation lasts 10 days, the female keeping the eggs near its abdomen. The hatching is ensured by a tooth found at the tip of its beak, which later on disappears. At birth, the babies don’t measure more that 13mm in length, are blind for 11 weeks and feed by licking the milk from their mother’s abdomen.
Nowadays, hunting and exporting a platypus are forbidden by law.
In the wild, a platypus lives around 12 years while in captivity its life expectancy can reach 17 years.

You are either oblivious or ignorant the reason for the decline of the house sparrow in Britain is the use of exterminator poison and or methods destroying their houses because they are classified as invasive species.... considering them as pests just as Chinese mentioned within the village deo. May be self censored or just ignorant.

As you can see from my thumbnail sparrows and me go way back, the one in my hand I called Arrow and he is quite a character. Although being completely wild he has learnt to recognise me and stuck with me for years. I am confused that this video claimed they don't migrate as he would certainly dissappear during the winter months...but it at least makes the arrival of spring more formal when a little bird lands on your hand to announce it. If your lucky enough to live close to these birds in an urban area it should be possible to get them to eat from your hand, it took me years but eventually they all started to trust me and it seems when one gets the message your not a threat the others figure it out too. Wonderful and amazing animals, very cool, very fast and even playful when relaxed. Adopt one today!

I've seen videos where someone says they are invasive why are they saying this and they are saying they have to be culled what do you think of this. I love them but then I love all birds and animals

When I was a boy I raised a sparrow, she was the sweetest pet I ever had. Even now, I raise lovebirds and every day I throw the sparrows the left overseeds and even have the plants growing that produce the seeds so our neighborhood sparrows don't have to look so far for food.

Why da hell is a photo of Mao in the middle of this video about sparrows?
My palm tree is home to nearly 100 of these little guys. Every time I open my door, at least 2 or 3 will fly down and panhandle for peanuts. I love to watch them get organized and fight off the mockingbirds when they come to raid their nests and steal their food stashes. The will sometimes go to another tree and come back with 30-40 of their buddies and gang up on the mockingbirds to run them off. They're sweet little birds, but if you give them any trouble, they can turn into an army of fierce little ninjas very quickly, but when the trouble has been dealt with, they go right back to being cute little birds. It isn't hard to love and respect them.

They are filthy birds that are an invasive in USA .There is no closed season on them in US and Canada.They need to be eradicated in the US as they kill cavity nesting song birds causing a decline in their populations. Hurrah for cats and raptors!!

Sort of mostly OK, although it does get a bit confused in mixing up the Passer sparrows with some of the American sparrows (in terms of what shows on screen), which are in a different family, and thus really quite different. But what is this nonsense about: "Scientists say these extraordinary creatures defy evolution." I was curious but nothing is said that even would suggest why such a silly comment would be made. Surely there is no scientist that would suggest that, because nothing in nature does that. Many years ago, I did my honours thesis in a study of the social behaviour of the House Sparrow & Tree Sparrow, based on the difference in their sexual dimorphism. Yes, we should learn a lot from what happened in China.

It's just another example of human ignorance and arrogance. It's the same as in the 12th century when the pope declared cats to be emissaries of the devil and ordered them all killed. The rat population got out of hand and the fleas that lived on the rats spread the bubonic plague that wiped out about 1/3 of Europe. Politicians are basically just monkeys on crack with a case of live grenades. Someday we will all be extinct thanks to these evil madmen.
