I have all my stock scattered around the house and does at times make it overwhelming and sometimes feeling paralysed , struggling to be productive. Having a separate entirety is the way to go! Great video Mel, lots of value in there!
It definitely impacts you when your surrounded by it. You never can escape your work. And I have a large family so felt it wasn’t really fair for them to also live amongst it LOL I see money looking at stock, the family see junk ha ha
Thank you! They have definitely put up with a lot of my stock invading their space over the years LOL. Thank you, I’m so happy with the shed. I love it.
We're just starting out and do rent a storage unit that is close to home and literally across the street from the post office. Our monthly is only $90 but we have to be careful because while stopping by frequently and mailing a package or two is okay, using the unit for a full-time workshop is prohibited. So if you are considering renting be sure to get a copy of the rules first and read them thoroughly before signing anything.
Watching this again after this last year happened, so many changes an upheavals for you 💕. After listening to the first couple of minutes about how storage should be close to your home and where your space is now I worry that it's going to be difficult. I hope the drive, the cost of gasoline and time, will not become too burdensome in top of the cost for your storage. Wish I could come help ☺️. Wishing you love and sending hugs from Arizona ❤
Thanks for watching and listening to my experience. Lots of pros and cons to consider when paying for storage units but clearing it from my house made it definitely worthwhile despite some of the hardships
I am so glad you moved home and now you are safe. Your new unit is amazing, wish my hubby was good at carpentering work. We moved in Feb and the house we purchased has a walk-out basement, but it does have a 200 sqft unfinished room, so my office is 10 feet away. I already had all my inventory on rolling shelves in crates so nothing had to be packed up. (Wish the rest of the house was on wheels crated, all furniture should be on wheels ready to go, lol). You are amazing love your personality and smile, I ALWAYS enjoy your videos!
I have a storage unit a couple of minutes from home, as is my post office. The guys who run it are also the guys in the office and are there for any issues and a friendly chat. I paid 6 months in advance and they gave me a 15 per cent discount as well as free insurance. They have a cleaning team ( I have seen them) and one of the owners is always sweeping out the dead leaves that blow into the entrance. The units are open 8 - 5 through the week and 8 -4 on Saturday. Unfortunately the lighting is a bit inadequate but par for the course I think. There is no pin entry, but the office is at the front and they are always pretty hot on who is on site. Great service all round.
Sounds like you have a great centre with management team! It really makes a big difference. My centre definitely seemed to be the “cheapest” and I think that meant I had to compromise on a few other areas. I struggled the most with not having any wifi.
I thought about getting a storage unit just to be better organized. It's all over in my house, upstairs, garage, basement. Death piles upstairs and in basement. Mostly from things I inherited from family and a few things I accumulated in my life or gotten free. Just so overwhelming. Plus, being a pt cake decorator and quilter, I've just about gotten to the crazy part in my life, lol... So happy to see and hear that this move is working out so much better for you. Love to see how nice you have it all arranged. :)
my biggest problem with "storage units" is, at least where I'm from they operate on a pretty standard business model. When units are available offer them at a good price month to month to fill empty units, then after a set amount of time hike the price up a substantial amount and hope it's more of an inconvenience to move out then it is to pay the new price. ultimately some renters move out and the cycle starts over. Moving an established inventory system isn't something I care to do every 12-24 months. I'm soon moving into a space that can function as my whole business space, (storage/photos/office) 375 sqft for $300 with high ceilings.
It's been a real journey for you but your she shed is the best for you, your family and your business. I store at home and yes have felt overwhelmed... But when I move I hope to get more space so I can shit my eBay into 1 room. Thanks for sharing 🙂
It was definitely worth it at the time to use storage sheds, my house was out of control with inventory all over it. Having it in the new shed, but also separated from inside my house, is the best of both worlds.
I pay $200 for a 10 x 20. Climate controlled. Luckily, there is an outlet right outside my door. We hung shop lights and just plug them in while we work! It also allows for electricity for shipping and laptop work! 👍🏼✌🏼❤️
Hi Mel! I have been using a storage unit for a year and two months now. Just last month I added an additional space. Of course that added to my cost and the old unit price went up! Yikes! Luckily a larger unit across the aisle from me opened up at a lower price than what I would be paying for my two units. So I’m in the process of moving my inventory in the new unit. Yes it is worth the cost since I don’t have space at home however I don’t have access to electricity which is a problem. A lot of back and forth for shipping and labels etc. This is my second year reselling, my goal for next year is to have my own shed. I absolutely love your shed and love the white board. Thank you for sharing your story, I really do enjoy your channel. Love from Texas!
I live in a 1 bed flat so a storage unit is a must have for me now. Only so much you can fit under the bed! I love it & it's been fantastic during our Sydney lockdown as it's gives me a valid reason to leave the house. I pay $200 a month but it would cost me at least 4 times that to move to a bigger home. I'm very jealous of your she shed but well done. It looks amazing. You deserve it!
It’s always a pleasure to be able to watch your videos Mel you’re a very pleasant person! I’m glad you’re enjoying your shed and can’t wait to see more of what sold and so forth!
eeks! If I rented a storage locker I would need to live in it.. but I do love possums sp that would be a perk. That is why I sell tiny stuff, all fits in my apartment. How awesome to have Shed.
I don’t like possums lol. Although they’re cute, they hiss at you ha ha ha. I’d have a heart attack if I saw a creature that big sitting in the corner of my shed. I’d never want to go back again ha ha. Selling small stock has so many pros if you can find that stock. I never expected how much space the books would take up! Thanks for watching Morry!
I know these are older videos (stuck under a sleeping newborn). If I was going to get a storage unit, I would also have a quick check around the outside of my unit for a power point. Might come in handy at some point 😉
Most Storage Kings here in VIC will give you unlimited access to their Wi-Fi and for a one-off installation fee (I think around $150-200 they will get power points fitted inside your unit.
As a woman to me storage units seems scary and unsafe. The fact that there's no power. This is 2021 they could include a light or two. Seems very expensive as well. You would need to sell a lot of books each month just to pay for the storage fees.
There are storage units that come with lights. I love mine, but it has access straight to outside where I park to work from. I am sure that she makes a great profit just from her u- tube following. I always keep mace with me or suggest a good bear spray to others, just incase. Nowhere is really safe in 2021. Having a concealed weapons license is helpful as well for my protection!
Why I invested in a repoed she cabin that now stores my inventory…not all but getting it out there and organized! Would never pay for storage elsewhere…too much work and costs! Paid cash for cabin from sales …built up inside with 3 original lofts! Best decision for us…especially since Covid hit us snd I had to spend several months recovering…knew all was safe!
I rented a smallish unit years ago to clear some of my personal stuff and stuff for sale out of my home - $72/fortnight. Twelve years later the light in the unit's blown, the toilets have always been locked and there's no security - you just drive in, BUT it's still costing $72/fortnight, so I'm happy. If I had my time over I'd have bought two shops down the road from home (which my bat-shit crazy ex wouldn't let me do) but, other than that no regrets about the storage shed.
where I live in New Jersey prices for homes and buildings are through the roof but in other parts of the country some ebay sellers are buying homes or land and putting up these big metal sheds with electric once their volume of sales can support it. Its a smart idea because "storage payments" go towards a piece of property. I have two storage units and I pay a little over 600 dollars for both.
You took the storage route to the next level lol. I am looking into one as a temporary thing. But if I ever got to the point of renting more than 2 units I would just rent a small warehouse garage. Then again I am not selling books lol. Thanks for the video!
I just keep everything at home. Just trying to figure out out to store everything. So books do get moldy out in the garage in totes or plastic containers. In garage that is not climate controlled. Get hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
I have a storage unit. I pay $195 per month. I’m lucky because my storage unit is 1/2 a block from my home and I walk there often. The staff is amazing! They take care of the maintenance immediately. And the manager lives on the premises. We have a security gate that opens at 6:00 am and closes at 10:00 pm and requires a PIN number to get inside. I don’t worry about the bathroom situation since I’m so close to home.
I always wondered why you didn't just dump a shipping container in your driveway while hubby converted the garage. I would have one if my driveway wasn't an uphill winding 4WD track. I am considering building a room out in the backyard somewhere. There's too much stuff in my house and it's only a small house.
Personally i think the absolute best way a storage unit can work is if a customer can buy direct from the unit. I have had my stock at home then in a storage unit then moved to a retail shop which i got a crazy price on. Now the storage is working for me and earning me money but again it also has its negatives as i have to be there during the opening times but you could taylor the times to your needs also.
As you know I had to rent one but I cannot wait till I have a house to use . Having space to store is great but no power or water is a pain. I pay monthly but don't have a contract
I was renting also and sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. I don't regret being in the storage units as I really felt I didn't have a choice but I am glad to be back home in my own house again but still having it separated is the best!
I am in the US and I *LOVED* my storage unit. It made me feel "official" and separated my inventory from my family, also kept it out of the flood plain I live in. It was incredibly HOT in the summer though, only the elevators had AC. They were climate controlled but that didn't mean comfortable for humans. I was locked into my price for 3 months which was great because my intro rate was quite low, but the new price I would pay in the fourth month went up TWICE while I was in the first and second month. There is a storage shortage in my area and the prices have doubled since I originally moved in. In the end I could not afford the unit price at month 4 and had to move back home. I love having all my inventory here from listing and packing purposes but it is now at risk of flood and is taking up space my family could use for other things. I have to add a rider to my home-owners insurance where I had insurance through the storage unit previously. Trade-off and as long as we don't have a flood it is about a wash. If we have a flood, well, there go 10,000 books.
I have a storage unit in an area that was previously a warehouse and its been very good and secure but I made sure I got a unit that was along the indoor driveway as another unit I could have got was way at the back but I didnt feel secure being there on my own.
That's a great point Merridy, I think choosing a unit you feel safe in is a big consideration as they can be dark and isolated. I liked mine was close to the lift and stairs and the corridor was like a circle so I could escape both ways if needed and not feel trapped.
I’m considering hiring out a small storage unit juror a few months just so I can get my garage decked out with shelving and sorting out all my books that aren’t sorted nor listed
It’s definitely a big job moving stock to and fro. Moving is hard. If you are planning to still work from home another option is to hire a small storage unit just to store personal items that you can’t get rid of, but that you also don’t really use often. That would free up room at home and allow you to keep working all from the one space.
@@backfromburnout I just have zero space to sort through everything… I live in a 2 bed unit and my single garage is soo packed with stuff I’ve scoured that I don’t have any room to get shelving up to sort as They are still in the same bags I bought them in. And mum hates the smell of 2nd hand books so they aren’t allowed inside the house 💩🤭
I have done the storage unit thing but didn't like it..I didn't like having to go down there to pull items out for the post..especially if cold and dark..I love working from home now and just have to be strict with not allowing stock to overtake our living areas.
I understand, my units were freezing in the winter here. I could only stay a couple of hours and my hands would be totally numb! Freezing, I hate being cold so it made it really unenjoyable to work in
It’s something I thought about but I’m only part time currently so don’t really want that much stock. Also most of the appeal of doing it is being able to work from home so I can spend more time with my baby boy. Great video though Mel with lots of helpful info. 😊👍🏻
Pro tip: Renting Shipping Containers is way more cost effective. Just have to find a place that does it. I personally get 1,000 square feet for $100 a month.
Yes, I was renting at the time so couldn't have storage containers on the property. That's a great price for you, certainly worthwhile at that price. Thanks for watching
i really need to get storage, but the thought of the cost freaks me out. but i think it just stresses me having it all around me, so the cost is going to be worth it.
HA! well you already know how I live, I guess I inspired this video lol. So considering the space / deal u had at the storage unit, the only reason you could do what you have at 'home' is that because it is 'your home'. I need to get rid of about 20% of my stuff before it becomes good here
Yes Dave. Now I have the best of both worlds. I have a designated space at home to save money but it’s also separated from my personal space. The fees are very high at the storage unit but for me it was totally worth it to separate the business.
I know here in the states, occupancy laws usually prevent working out of a storage facility due to code stuff…although, I think I’ve seen some larger companies starting to offer “small business specific” units that are equipped with basics like outlets, etc….of course they cost a pretty penny. Glad to see the new “office” already working wonders for you, Mel! It’s such a transformation!
Oh wow that would make it hard. Because I didn’t have any power I would do only the work I had to and then leave and finish it all at home on the computer. The best thing about having it all at home is being able to do everything in the one place.
I run my 2 businesses from home I looked into getting storage but it was too expensive and would have to sell 20% more a month just for increased storage & insurance costs I wish I could build a shed like yours in my garden but I haven't got the space, but on the plus side I am just 300m from a beach :)
I have to get a small storage unit for some of my stock. When you wonder if you should remove your bed to make room for more storage and sleep on the sofa...you have to make a change. LOL
Ha ha. I actually know sellers who sleep on their couches because they have stock in the bedroom! That’s not for me but I also understand some people don’t have any other choice. I think you will feel like I did and it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders if you clear some of that stock from your personal space. X
@@backfromburnout See, I haven't started selling online yet. I sell jewellry and hard goods at flea markets and really enjoy it. I have done research on every single thing and check the sold stats on ebay before I buy. No guarantee it would all sell of course. I wanted to build up my inventory this way so I would have a good amount on hand for when I start on ebay. I have quite a good lot of books that have sale prices of $20 and up. I also have some especially for bundling. I purposely packed everything jn small boxes and bins so I can use me cart to carry them back and forth to a storage unit only a ten minute walk away. I think this is the best way for me to keep control of things. I live in a apartment and don't want management to know what I'm doing.
I have rented a 10x30 unit spend like 325.00 a month / 3,900.00 a year. but i am right next to my home i live in a condo so i dont have a yeard lol but it will do
Yes they raised mine during my time also. And when they raise three units it’s a big added chunk! Definitely one of the cons to hiring a unit because once all your stock is there and set up it’s hard to move and find a different location if your price becomes too high.
That monthly storage fee is the same as my ebay fees. Then add post and cost of the goods. Getting rid of the storage cost is a must to increase the profits. Did you work out how much you tossed out to get everything inside the she shed?
Huge money! I'm so glad not to have that expense now. I don't know how many I culled but it was mainly small random fiction novels that I couldn't bundle.
Yes very much despite the high fees. It was a weight lifted off me not having stock everywhere inside my house. I needed to seperate my home life to my work life. Even though I’m working from home again now, it’s totally seperate and none of my stock invades my personal family space. But all the points I mentioned need to be considered before hiring because it’s all the little small things, that some people don’t consider until it’s too late, will impact on that experience.
@@backfromburnout Thanks for your response. I've enjoyed following your story and I'm glad that you have a great home office area with plenty of separation!
@@EM-qz8wj thank you for following. Storage is a huge issue for resellers. My experience was filled with pros and cons - and some of them I wish I had considered prior to choosing which centre I booked - but I would hire storage units again in the same situation.

if you are renting, it would make sense to move into a bigger house with more room as compare to paying 1.3k for storage unit.
We already were renting a 5 bedroom house as we have four kids. A 6 bedroom house would be almost impossible to find here.
It seems like if you can it would be a good idea to build a shed or something because 15,000 could build a nice area and you get to keep it forever.
Yes, now that we have moved house we have converted a shed at home and it's so much better.

I did the Whole Storage unit thing years ago had Lights and Power 24 hours a day. But was Costing $1200 a month! That's a huge expense.
It's so much money! You were lucky to have power and lights - that would have made a huge difference to me.
I live in an apartment, so if I am to expand beyond my study, the only option is a storage unit.
omg I would have loved an aussie possum. 💗
Ha ha ha ha. Until they hiss at you LOL
i really need to get storage, but the thought of the cost freaks me out. but i think it just stresses me having it all around me, so the cost is going to be worth it.
I feel like getting tough sheds would be the way to go for me, something tangible that I would own and be able to use.
It would save heaps of money in the long run!
HA! well you already know how I live, I guess I inspired this video lol.
I run my 2 businesses from home
I looked into getting storage but it was too expensive and would have to sell 20% more a month just for increased storage & insurance costs
I wish I could build a shed like yours in my garden but I haven't got the space, but on the plus side I am just 300m from a beach :)
1300 a month?! U could pay a mortgage and keep the items in that place. That way you get more assets and continue your business.
Lets go Mel ♥️
Yes Jeff!! Thank you
I have rented a 10x30 unit spend like 325.00 a month / 3,900.00 a year. but i am right next to my home i live in a condo so i dont have a yeard lol but it will do
I have a storage bin and do like it, but they just raised my fee $30 mo!!
My inventory got kicked out of the house when my wife declared, "This is not a house. It's a warehouse!" 😀
Ha ha ha, it really does impact you when it's in the whole house. My family hated it lol
buy a generator then charge it at home
So what do have know if you don't mind me asking you?
I work from home in a garden shed that my husband converted for me
th-cam.com/play/PLjrFePPU8MFe5thj0cTb7FuaHeF7jnBSN.html
O we know! Trust me all of us have been there!
So was it worth it to you? I'm not sure you answered the question!
I'd rather invest in a home for business and storage because then you could sell it in the end...
😳 wow that's a lot of $$$. That's a mortgage payment!
I thought your husband was carpenter, I am surprised why didn’t you make a huge shed in your own back yard?
We were renting at the time :)
That’s hella expensive.. the storage units hear are not that expensive
So expensive!!!
Wow, you are a DIME PIECE
