Horror in non-horror media is the best kind of horror, and the reason I love horror style Easter Eggs or even Halloween episodes of TV shows/cartoons. In true horror, you are going in expecting to be scared, and for many, that can make the impact less intense or even downright boring for some. This is why thrillers are often better than mainstream horror, since they know how to build up and release. You don’t expect horror in non-horror, making it all the more impactful. It promotes the creation of urban legends which are fun for people young and old.
There’s this one dungeon in the Dragonborn DLC of Skyrim with exploding jump scare spiders that made me feel like I was playing an Alien game and trying to avoid the facehuggers

When I was young I used to be scared of going to those bigfoot areas in SA. Honestly, they should add Bigfoot as an easter egg mini boss in GTA 6's forest area. They can make it like he randomly attacks you if you're roaming in the woods at like a certain time to give homage to those old videos and theories. That would be sick.
The RDR1 ghost hunting is SO RELATABLE for me! As a kid I literally did the same thing with my best friend at the time! I would look up myths and scary mysteries and go to investigate them in-game. One of my favourites was the old Tumbleweed mansion (it still creeps me out in RDR2 but the prequel feels a lot less scary, probably because I'm older lol). I remember one myth about the devil's face being seen in a certain church window, I think that was Tumbleweed as well, and no clue if I was imagining it but at the time I remember seeing a face, and that messed me up LOL. The scariest place for me though was that abandoned camp in the snow (in Tall Trees), I forgot the name since I haven't played RDR1 for like 10 years now, but I remember there were graves and a cave you could go into. Even in Undead Nightmare that place freaked me out. At the church between McFarlane's Ranch & Armadillo (in RDR1) there was a certain grave, where if you stood on it and smashed a lantern you would fall partly through, and I remember seeing a literal corpse by moving the camera through the floor. I remember showing my friend and we were traumatised. This is a literal paragraph, but just hearing about your time with RDR1 horror brought back so many memories. I miss those days!

Also that MK9 crypt jumpscare just pissed me off when it got me. I didn't go back in there until I grinded out the game enough to have enough coins to unlock everything, then i muted my tv and just unlocked everything as fast as I could lol

the jumpscare for man-bat is actually connected to an entire side mission on him basically you get jumpscared and then he just flies around a bit, you're supposed to glide onto him and batman will tackle him and try to capture him
Metroid games have always had this unsettling feeling despite being a sci-fi action adventure series. Super Metroid had the Crocomire jumpscare after beating him and the death of Crocomire was horrible too, poor guy Metroid Fusion had SA-X, a copy of you that is stronger and it had that infamous jumpscare scene Metroid Dread had those E.M.M.I robots that were pretty creepy
One thing that scared me as a kid it’s not really horror but more uneasiness, it’s when u load up a multiplayer map with no one in it. I used to do it on all the bo1 and 2 maps it was just so weird
That man bat jumpscare in Arkham knight nearly stopped my heart 😂 I’m pretty sure I was grinding for a few hours one night when I had just recently got it, then that jumpscare came outta nowhere and nearly made me drop my controller. I can’t even remember if I screamed or not I might’ve just frozen out of unexpected terror 😂

Back when Call of Duty was first starting the zombies mode one of the first maps was Verruckt, a dirty blood stained abandoned insane asylum with disembodied screams that echo through the walls, zombies that actually run at you through the halls, and it spawns you away from your friends and you can’t reunite until the power comes on. Pretty scary for a non horror game if you ask me
I remember there was that one husband and wife in RDR2 where they offered you to stay in there house but then you get poisoned by them and spawn next to corpses. I remember I was so confused and creeped out 😭
The entire metal gear solid series has some great scary moments for a non horror game but a great one that sticks to me is Metal Gear Solid 3 had a few great horror moments. Such as when you get captured, if you saved your game. Quit and then reloaded you’d play a hack n slash game that was a canceled game project and it just lasts for a set amount of time until Snake wakes up in a cell from that sequence as a nightmare. In that same part of the game when Snake is confronted with the boss fight of The Sorrow you can’t fight him at all because he’s a ghost so you’re just wandering a stream, and depending on how you’ve been playing you’ll be faced with ghosts of everything and every enemy you’ve killed up until that point.
The ghosts in pokémon games used to scare me so much. From lavendar town, to old chateau to the haunted house and girl on the bridge in pokemon black1 /white 2
Ocarina of Time was WAY too damn scary for a non-horror game. I was terrified in the Under the Well area, and had to take breaks every few mins in the Shadow Temple because the music and atmosphere was freaking me out. Why Nintendo thought it was okay to add those redead in the castle market to greet you the first time you left the Temple of Time, I have NO idea!
Cod zombies is debatable on it being a horror game, but there are jump scares if you scope in to specific spots with a sniper. It’s silly, but I like imagining the fright someone got discovering it for the first time. Worst jump scare is on the map zns
The classic "horror in non-horror game" is Pokemon Tower, imo. The Dragon Age franchise also has a ton of straight-up horror levels, especially in Origins. The Deep Roads sections in that game are genuinely messed up.

This is probably really stupid but when I was a kid I actually used to be scared of the Great Fairy from Zelda Ocarina of time. Really think it mostly had to do with the shrill laugh she does when she appears, her appearance, and how the N64 graphics made her look. No joke she actually scared me so much I never went into any other Great Fairy fountain no matter what LOL. Obviously now as an adult I'm totally fine but as a kid she scared the life outta me.
One semi unknown thing thats pretty scary but also depressing is from the Nintendo game, Majora's Mask. The main threat of the game is the moon crashing into the earth. On the final night before the moon crash, you can go to this ranch area and inside the owner's home you'll find a pair of sisters. One much younger than the older sister. The older sister is well aware of what's going to happen while the younger one is oblivious. To make sure that her end is painless, she allows the younger sister that she can finally try a special drink from the main town's bar that night. It's an incredibly scary and harrowing interaction you can find within the game, especially for a Nintendo game. I know its not like a jumpscare or anything but it's one of the main things that come to mind when talking about scary / dark stuff in non horror games
