I've got a version if you want to do it standing up, it's slightly different finish from the version Stephan shows here, but you can still use the entry th-cam.com/video/GkeksLub1AQ/w-d-xo.html
I just went back to my first lesson in bjj since two years of the mat. In the interim I learned how to do the inverted shoulder roll. I'd never used it in rolling before so I did it a couple of times unecessarily just to see if I could do it while rolling and it worked perfectly. It confused some of the guys because they were expecting a leg lock attempt off of it, but I didn't know what to do with it haha so I just kept spinning hahahah.
Had jiu jitzu today, I already knew what this move was but never fully tried learning It, some kid who was maybe around my age but looked way younger tried this on me, I thought it was so sick and knew right away I wanted to learn this lol
Whilst rolling a week ago I saw 2 guys, one of them did this technique and it prompted me to look it up. Very nice technique, I'd hope to incorporate this in to my arsenal as it seems to be effective and flashy which I like the most.
Imanari rolls are extremely effective but are really hard to hit, especially when dealing with an experienced sparer who can see it coming. You see it on the pro level a lot but rarely do people successfully pull off the move. When they do though, almost always a guranteed tap out .
Good display of how to set it up. Didnt learn this move until I got my brown belt. I guess it's partially because my gym didnt focus on leg locks much. I have a modified version of the setup, where Instead of haivng my thumb pointing down on the grip of the leg, I have it upwards and dont roll the same.
Stephan, thank you for this tutorial. I'll try to drill this method at the dojo and hopefully transition to stand up variation. Thank you for the step-by-step breakdown I always appreciate it
Thank you! This is the best breakdown of this technique I've seen. We just learned this in class, and wish we had this breakdown. I'd be serving up delicious Imanari Rolls now!
Lol... wait, can you teach me telepathy, pyromancy, and time travel? I mean those are all in video games too... But seriously, im just playing with you, great video, you really did a great job showing exactly how this perplexing, unexpected, and impressive move. I really enjoyed this video!
thank you for this and all you do these vids for free! very easy to understand, I wish I could take private lessons from you, or at least from a good school. anyways, great move! Ill practice it on my brother the next time i see him lol.
@@nickcef8877 Respect for checking it out! Imanari Rolls are one of the coolest looking moves, if you enjoyed it I'd recommend checking out a flying armbar (Demetrius Johnson nailed one in the UFC).
It's very similar, but a lot safer since there's minimal danger of falling sideways down on his knee. The position you end up in is called '411' about which there are many other videos online.
Would this attack be effective for someone that is 5'5 135 against a much larger person, say, 6'2 200 lbs.? I've always imagined taking down giants with this move, maybe I'm just delusional but it would be so cool if it worked!
suggest you look at herman suwanda s video of sumatran harimau ,he shows many variatons of this ,there are many techniques of ground similar to this in the harimau silat styles
Professor Kesting, At UFC 272 last night, at @ of Round 1, Kevin Holland did a leg entanglement takedown attempt on Alex Oliveira. Was that an Imanari Roll? Or does that have another name that Holland attempted? Thanks!
Oh man. You said if it's in a video game i need to know how to do it. I got in big trouble for trying to do fatalities on people! Guess il work on my Hadoken. Jokes aside. Thanks for the awesome video
I would like to see you doing Ryan Halls Imanari roll he used on bj penn. his legwork was opposite of yours, his back leg came in from the back of opponent between his legs, instead of front leg across the front as you are doing, you should check it out! Imanari to me is the most elegant piece of jiu jitsu there ever was! So I now see there is 4 ways to imanari roll someone, thats two different entry methods for each leg.
My pops and I were wrestling one time, mind you we box and don’t wrestle and I got out from underneath him and just did some sort of twist and my legs locked in between his and I just grabbed it and he tapped, since then I’ve Been looking up how to do it know I can do it while standing
I used to train daily until i was shadow boxing one day with combos ending with uppercut to the teeth. You tend to day dream sometimes on your so so days and one day instated wondering and came to an understanding that today everyone has a a gun or knife and on that second I quit. Decided to fight fire with fire. However; this is the most amazing thing I think I have ever seen in all the time I trained. If I still had the body toughness needed for this sport I would drop everything and go into what ever art this came from. This answers just about any weapon threat if your willing to break legs. Absolutely impressive move, love this just amazing. The guy that thought this out needs a fat steak. I used to create moves and I know you're going to eat some knuckles, kmees, and elbows along the way even when your going super slow when designing it. Thank God your going slow but you need to commit amd understand why it failed because in a real fight they will rip your head off so this guy just simply bypassed everything and on top of that crippled the opponent permanently in less than 30 seconds I guess? Just amazing engineering, the guy must be a bad ass
I like this vid and am about to sub and watch more my only question is how do i do this move if i have to start off from the sitting position between his legs in a real fight i will never be in such a position please to take this as hate more like a rookie that is confused
The scissor takedown requires getting the angle and the leg on their hips. Where as the Imanari roll you can do straight on. There is also the thing about the scissor takedown being banned in a lot of rulesets.
I was just waiting for this one, thank you. Could you do the stand up version also?
Maybe I'll do one on the standing version as well, but it's not very complicated if you can do this version. Start here first.
I've got a version if you want to do it standing up, it's slightly different finish from the version Stephan shows here, but you can still use the entry

Ferguson vs Barboza brought me here
Tony Ferguson 👍
"If it's in a video game, YOU need to know how to do it".
Never a truer word spoken!
I knew that someone had a comment like this. :D
Welcome to mortal kombat
Kali Sikaran Bath lol
that made me lmao
But how do I double jump irl?
Easily one of the coolest martial arts moves there is. Not only is it badass looking, its actually a legit and effective move to get someone down
02:56 That was a *very* impressive breakdancing spin.
I'm gonna start doing this to random people on the street
Gotta do that sideways roll down the street until you find someone.
jonathan frazier would be hilarious
Dominic I find Kani Basami is also fun when used in that way
Dominic : Tsujigiri. 😎
Funny dude, I got a visual image of that and laughed out loud..
I'm confused, at what point do i have to throw sand ?
They change the name to be unpredictable. But. It's was too late to try it
This was epic and hilarious :D
After you ankle pick him
After you pull a glock
😆😄😅😂😅
El Cucuy brought me here lol
Yeah me too
same here... Tony 'El cucuy' Ferguson
He will come back 💯
Christian his chance at khabib is gone
I was expecting this from tony on khabib right on the middle of the cage
My BJJ coach is Koji Imanari, who just so happens to be the brother of Masakazu Imanari.
Supercool!
Im wearing tights that I borrowed from your mum. Is she good? 🤔
Mikel Stinson ur point being? ? ? .

Imanari roll? I thought it was a tutorial for making delicious sushi roll with avocado outside and crab inside with chipotle mayo
Sergio Castro that sounds pretty good
F*ck, now im hungry
xD
If this is not a joke, you are one of the biggest idiot I ever saw in mt life.
ABDULLAH MAQ hahaha what do you think ?
I’m here after Ryan Hall vs BJ Penn
Yes
Dude Ryan Halls is different i still don't get it
We actually worked this in class the other day and its way beyond me lol. Fun but not realistic for a White-Blue level guy.
JosephBolognaTheThird 😎🤙🤙🤙🤙
@@quasar4601 its all in your head. As a total beginner I was hitting berimbolos one month in.
If I owned a sushi restaurant I’d have an Imanari Roll that sounds pretty basic but has a secret super spicy sauce to catch people off guard! 😂 😂
So much easier than trying to learn it by watching Iminari do it haha

I love Stephan Keating. I'd love to train with you sometime. You seem very humble and of course very knowledgeable.
The video game part in slow motion explains it very well. The technique is depicted there step by step.
Cool, the video game version is an ashi garami version without the knee reap
This technique is surprisingly effective! Good instruction. #oss
Instructions are spot on! Thank you for another great video.
