This man will forever be respected for innovating this amazing move. Yes, some guys are even better than he is at using it, doesn't change that he paved the way.
Thats usually how it goes. Some great innovator comes up with something new and effective, and then even better grapplers than him perfect it or use it way more effectively
I can't believe the Imanari roll is 20 years old. It's still as much the most innovative attack in martial arts as the day it was first executed in competition.
Thank you both of you sirs! This is the move iv been working my ass off and this video helps so much!!! I cant wait to get in the gym tmr to try it again. I love it!
That’s friggin AWESOME… he invented that?? Deserves a noble prize. I just seen it on a FB feed in a match, the 11 sec submission, you no I had to come straight to YT to see how it’s done. Nice work my friend!..👊🏾
I just learnt the move today will try it tomorrow at my session, i just begin bjj no gi 2 weeks ago but i already developped a passion, yesterday night i practice my mount to s mount to armbar and ive tapped people with it for the 4 first time in my life in under 10 minutes of roll🤩 if anyone has very good tips for me to improve faster lmk
Why does the host fall so smoothly? Is it the lower leg that kicks, the higher leg that pushes, or does the host go along for the move? Some resistance will reveal more about why Imanari's roll is so effective
It's the same motion as a scissor takedown. One leg behind the opponents ankle pushing it forward towards you and acting like a tripping hazard, the other leg pushing the opponent away from you, so the opposing forces force the leg straight and you to fall. Then throw in the momentum from the spinning then want bam thank ya mam.
GREASE: Imanari: I'm about to ruin their whole career. it's slick moves like these that have convinced me to finally take up submission grappling when the gyms have opened up again in my city. that, and good fundamentals... yyaahhh
How would you modify the approach/roll if your opponent is shorter than you? Could they stop it easier in theory since your legs are higher up, their center of gravity is lower,...?
@bowmanpwner Thank you for your input. I'm clearly not at your experience level. Not even much experience with scissor sweeps admittedly. More civil input, less snark please. Not everyone has a black belt or knows the smaller details of the techniques.
Jeffrey Look I think he means do it from an open guard lol but if not, that’s a good way to use imanari, although you should learn real Brazilian basics until you start doing flashy stuff, nothing against it I love the imanari but it has a incredibly low success rate, especially with finishing the heel hook
Hey guys, maybe someone can answer this for me: At UFC 272 last night, at @ of Round 1, Kevin Holland did a leg entanglement takedown attempt on Alex Oliveira. Was that an Imanari Roll? Or does that have another name that Holland attempted? Thanks!
Many a times when I do it, people tend to fall over me and then maul me. It sometimes fails even with same weight class guy. What could I be doing wrong?
This move is so smooth man lemme tell u at a bar in sa some drunk guy tried fighting me but i dont drink he was calling me a faghot cause i had a pink polo on amd i did this move and damn boy was crying for me to let go
@Boonk Gang Watch Rogan’s podcast Bravo literally admits that wasn’t his place to come in and give advise in that moment and he just kind of froze up when he got in there. For what we reason they threw bravo in as the main guy giving advise in the 4th round when he’s not a striking coach.
I'm a MMA practitioner living in Asia Philippines ,hello sir ! is there any vacant position to your martial arts academy ,I want to apply as trainee assistant coach or helper I'm serious to learn your skills and teach to the students,I have self discipline with good heart ..respectfully yours Thank you
does this work the same if I don't hook the thigh with my leg first and roll without it?(watch Marvin Castells for reference) also should this bring any difference if im doing it on a bigger guy this way sir?
Your head may be too close to you opponents leg when you initiate the roll, so you lose your momentum and end up with your opponent standing over you instead of falling back. You should also try to make your opponent fall down at an angle, in the direction of the leg you're attacking. This prevents your opponent from simply stepping back to get a solid base.
I always find my head gets trapped on the ankle and my hands end up in a weird position. Also the initial action of just locking the legs onto the opponent’s leg is pretty difficult. Great video as always. ⚡️
wow an imanari roll starring imanari! nice done!

Emelie den modige the Imanari roll is invented by Masakazu Imanari. Now I think of it, I have no clue why I said that hahha

This is a famous jiu jitsu move called the “imanari roll”, beautifully executed
The fact he can slow it down is crazy
Perfect placement in every stage

Yeah I saw him in one championship he is very much fit with his technique, his opponent need to submit, no other choice. Very intelligent too.
