Thank you for sharing what you have found over the years of building this kit. You have improved many Enterprise builds through your videos.

Completely agree with the importance of fitment and procedure. It is possible to work the five hull parts into fitting as desired without flaws that will cause problems later. When after many dry assemblies and adjustments to get the best results, I used a #6 paint brush to apply extra thin Tamiya capillary action cement quickly to bond the sides and fantail to the bottom. Once done I added the top without glue and held the pieces together with twenty elastic bands insuring the parts would hold while curing. Follow Boyd's advice and you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the great tips on the alignment. Are you going to show the building of the hanger deck and the arboretum as well? It would be great to know how you do the lighting.

Thanks again for the invaluable tips. When I finally get to the kit I'll reference this playlist often. If you ever do another 350 nx a series like this would be equally helpful

Thanks Boyd, this is going to be my reference series to finally build my ship. I'm glad I was not having a cup of joe while watching this video because at the first when you said you have built "a couple" of these kits I involuntarily chuckled out loud. Thanks for all the great tips.

Just a note. It's mostly the locking tabs on the two side hull assemblies that are the problem. I kept the top locking tabs untouched and didn't have any problems closing the gap with mine.

This is the part I have really been looking forward to - I have always struggled with the secondary hull assembly in this kit, ending up with really ugly seams and problems fitting the hangar bay end piece so it is great to see how best to deal with it.

The 1/350 refit is not a very well engineered kit, but as you said it's getting old.
Would be far superior if the kit was tooled now, but with your skills I'm sure it will be a fantastic build.

Awesome. Thank you for all the great information you always give. I'll be keeping all this in mind as I get to this on the two Enterprises I'm working on. Definitely answered some questions that I was concerned about. Thanks Boyd!

Yeah kinda wishing now I had attached the rear piece earlier like you did, as the gaps and light leaks were a pain to deal with.

I was looking forward to some detailed explanation video on doing the crescent lighting on the airlocks. I hope you managed to record that or can do one soon. I got an idea from your explanation in the previous video and had some idea of my own, but would love to see your process.

Nice pointers for this kit. I hated this kit when it first came out. It was super frustrating the way it was poorly designed. I finally had finished building it but it looked just okay and there were no aztec decals so I hand painted all the aztecs which took days and then covered them almost completely with white paint so it was very subtle. It actually looked pretty good. It eventually ended up in the trash bin though to make room for other stuff! 🤣😂

For the mounting holes on the bottom back of the shuttle bay floor, I ovaled them out fore to aft. Then on the aft side, cut the side off creating a funnel shape so it guides the pins in to seat deeper in the cut ovals so it slides further aft to contact the fantail piece. Looking at Additionally making a flange for under the fantail curve that the deck can rest on and be additional light blocking provided there's room to do so.

Boyd , I've been reluctant to buy this Kit because of the Fit issues I've heard about . This Video really motivates me to attempt the build now , Thanks.

I just saw that you posted this! Glad to see you're moving forward on the Refit. I'm building my 3rd (I love pain) and was just working on the secondary hull today. Our procedures are very similar, and it's interesting to see what you do differently. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Getting things to fit well here before gluing is surely good practice to make for a good foundation.

Some of the odd ways the kit fits togeather makes me think they intended for this to be a peg/snap togeather model kit and changed their minds halfway through the engineering process.

Great video!! I really want one of these big Enterprise models, hopefully I can find one. Nice and very helpful tips and tricks.
    Edit : I'd also REALLY like to have a 1:350 1701-E
    AirHammer out!!

Hi Boyd, very helpful as always and much appreciated. Curious, the last two segmented updates came out not as part of the build series. One was part of the Nautalis vid and this one seems to be a stand alone hull update. Just seems a bit out of sequence. Any plans to provide more details on the shuttle bay build? Again, thank for sharing your experience.

Great video Boyd! I always learn new things with every video you do. I do have one question, what do you use for wiring? I've always used magnet wires but I heard you say you don't use that anymore.
Looking forward to you next video! Stay safe until then. 👍

I use 30 gauge wrapping wire. It's just as thin as magnet wire but it has an easy to remove vinyl coating on it.
      It's available at Hdamodelworx.

Hi Boyd, 1. What basecoat color did you use on the 1:350 enterprise refit, and was it acrylic enamel, or lacquer? 2. Did you use a gloss clear before, and after applying the decals? I'm considering using duplicolor for light blocking, and priming, and since I don't have a spray gun, I was considering using Tamiya rattle can paints. Just trying to make sure I get the right primers, paints, and clear coats before ordering. You've built so many beautiful, and detailed models over the years, that you've become my go to guy when I need guidance. I built the 1:350 tos enterprise using your suggestions,, and watching your videos, and it came out absolutely beautiful. It definitely gets the WOW factor from family, and friends. Thanks again Boyd for your expertise, patience, and guidance.

      @TrekWorks  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I used Duplicolor grey primer and then top coated with Tamiya white primer for the hull base color. They used regular white primer on the real thing and it looks good. I'll finish all of the aztec painting and the other colors on the raw base coat and then seal it with one coat of Duplicolor matte clear. After that, apply the decals and seal once more with the same. The matte clear dries a nice smooth semi gloss. They have 2 kinds of matte clear, I prefer the one for wheels. It's smoother and not as dull.

    • @garysiers1014
      @garysiers1014 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you. I used the same duplicolor matte clear that you used on my 1:350 tos enterprise, and it went on nice, and smooth. The decals weren't as detailed on the tos enterprise, and easier to apply. The decals for the Refit look like they might be a bit of a challenge in some areas...thats mainly why I asked if the gloss clear would help them lay better on the model, and reduce possible silvering. I have micro set, and micro sol solution should I need it. Maybe I'll try the matte clear first, then apply the decals, then use the gloss clear as a final coat...still undecided right now. I might use only the matte clear, so the ship looks more realistic, and less like a toy.

    Hi Boyd,
What brand, and colors of pearlescent paints did you use on the 1:350 Enterprise refit?...I'm going to be ordering the masks from HDA modelworks soon. From photos, it looks like green, gold, red, and blue we're used. Also, should any prep work need to be done on the decals to prevent the decals from tearing, or disintegrating?
    Thanks,
    Gary

I'll enjoy you explaining the kit, Boyd, but I think I'll never tackle this one!
I think it would drive me nuts!!!! Too big for me to display and it would just consume too much of my time. I know I don't have the patience to deal with this scale.
I have an old Art Asylum/Diamond Select Enterprise-A toy model at any rate.... Original release so it doesn't have the Kirk audio clips.

I'm thinking about picking up a 1/1000 scale USS Reliant model and fiddling with that before I do anything with an Enterprise kit in the same scale. A local Ollies Discount Outlet has that kit and the 1/1000 USS Enterprise: Discovery version (which I don't like) on sale for $12.99 which I know is a VERY good price! MSRP now is $25 for both kits so it's an excellent deal.
I think I can handle a 1/1000 scale kit. There are plenty of tutorials for that one just to do a simple build-up.
One thing I noticed about the box -- it doesn't say it's 1/1000 scale. I looked for the scale rating but I couldn't find it!
It's a redesigned box. I don't think it's the original box art... I saw this Reliant kit around 5-7 years earlier in a Michaels or Hobby Lobby and it was not the same box for sure. I think the other box art was simple "space background" in blue with an artist's rendition of the Reliant.
I'm still amazed Polar Lights/Round 2 never released a 1/350 scale Reliant. That has to be the second most iconic movie era miniature after the Enterprise Refit. I think it was used more often than the Excelsior. It was a background ship in many episodes through Deep Space Nine.

So you completely remove the pylon tabs? In an older video you just shaved them down a bit, but now you recommend completely removing them?

Very nice. I need to get mine built. I bought my 1/350 kit right when it was released. I received a nice tshirt in the science blue color of the TOS. I only need to get a nice light kit for it.
