Pry the top open with a flat and narrow tool by placing it inside one of the vents and using leverage. That'll give you enough space to insert a guitar pick-style tool or credit card. Then you can use a spudger or the same metal tool in the opening, running it around the drive to pop the clips. When you're done, and if you ever need to return for service, not even Sherlock Holmes is going to know it's been opened. You may break or otherwise crack some internal clips, but these will all face the same damage if anyone at the factory attempts to open it for verification.
I have the same 12TB hard drive. HD Tune Pro indicates: airflow temperature current 75 worst 74 but threshold remains at 0? Is it safe to delete the 200MB EFI system partition of this hard drive does this have a function?
How do you know what model drives they put in these things? They do not say on the website which might imply it is not always the exact same type as you found here.
I was looking at buying one of these 12TB drives, but the reviews don't seem to recommend. Issues such as overheating or simply just stopping working seem to be common. You seem to know your stuff, are these drives any good? I want a large external drive to put all the information on, from the smaller external drives I have accumulated over the years. I am worried about a drive failing and losing all the data from years of photographs/videos from holidays etc. Thanks in advance..
Thanks! Like you, i needed the drive for data expansion...but I also wanted to use the internals to read and recover data from past legacy drives. Consolidation! Other than boogering up the side seam like you did (hardly noticible), it was easy peasy following along with your vid. Thanks!
It's a HDD not a SSD which means it has moving parts, like a record player or cd player it scans a physical spinning disk with a laser. SSD's have no moving parts and are significantly faster. HDD's are older technology, more inventory, higher storage for cheaper, though less fast. The noise is the drive spinning, arm moving.
I was prepared buying expansion's 10tb hard drive, and found out they have new appearance model recently. thanks for sharing this storage hard drive inside. Don't know if 10tb got the same hard drive inside. Anyway it seems worth to buy !
With the chip shortage, anything is possible, but I have pulled out more than a dozen drives from Seagate and WD USB kits over the years and never once had a problem.
just for info: newer plastic chassis models are made to break closing pins on opening. So if you want to re-assembly the product to resell it, you will need a good amount of glue and a lot of patience :D
I would like to buy form you if you still have the case for that hard drive. I have one that the USB port broke and the Drive is still good and woould like to put a new case. I can buy cases on Amazon, but if you still have one and do not need it. Let me know. Thanks Eero
Many times the enclosure stops working properly and you must pull the drive to get the data off of it. I always find the drives dying (read/write/dma errors) long before the warranty expires. The Seagate Backup Plus cases must be man handled to get them to open, no easy open like you show. No worries though, you are not saving the enclosure, just the drive.
Not at all difficult to reassemble as an external drive. If I were to clean up the scratches I could probably take it back to the store. But I suspect 4TB Hitachi drive I replaced the 14 TB Seagate drive with would not be appreciated. But seriously, I'll put the 14TB in my main drive array, and use the USB enclosue 4TB as on of my backup disks.
I want to comment and let people know that if they buy these, they should keep the external enclosure and keep note of what drive came out of what enclosure as they are required for a RMA. I just found this out a month ago as I had to get mine replaced as the bad sectors got worse and worse. Seagate will not just take the drive!
@@mikeadriano3330 They like to claim that but it's not legal in the US due to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. You do have to talk to them and fight it though if you don't have the enclosure. It's easier if you just put it back in the enclosure when you sent it back. I had no issues when I did that.
@@URTechDotCa Your way of using (wrong) tools looked scary. Yellow cutting knife can't be bend. Also pushing tools to left hand direction is never good idea.
I'm very surprised this man didn't end up in ER with his USB enclosure opening skills.
Thanks for the instructions on how to open the case. I ordered 2 of them to upgrade my NAS..
I also didn't expect 7200s to be built in there.🙂
I hope yours are 7200's too. If so, it is a great deal.

You da man. Thanks for the extra tips.
thanks for the very clear instruction. i just got exactly this in a 14tb at costco today for $99/each. got 5.
Newer models are a bit more difficult to open. Thanks for showing us the way!
If you're gonna shuck it anyway, just take a hatchet to the enclosure!
These are the newer enclosures, AFAIK. Current online anyway and identical to 14TB picked up this week.
Martin Freeman sure knows his stuff about hard drives.

How do you open apart the drive for stuck head? You stopped short of showing that on this version as there are no screws on 12tb to 18tb versions?

That is why you need atleast 3 copies of everything important.
If I wanted to take the metal shell off of that hard drive, what tool would I need?

I have this exact same enclosure and been meaning to do this. Thanks for the video!
Are they SATA drives or SAS attached USB drive ?
Great video, straight to the point! 👍
Would this go back together again after opening the case or is it broken?
Hi I just bought new one same as the one in the video while I'm transferring files to it it kinda make lot's of strong vibration is that normal!??

Would like to know if its a new drive in there or a refurbished one?
This was a brand new one Ed... great name.
What is durability or longevity of 12 tb hdd
Can work 8 hrs day and then surview 5 yrs
Or more yrs?

Why isn’t the it showing all my TB on my PC?
thx for the video, did the same with my 14TB Expansion, and now the drive doesnt dismount itself all the time, totaly stable
Is it possible, through software, to find out what model drive you have without opening the case?
Thanks for the video.
Use crystalmark, it will tell you exactly what's inside.
@@smegger68 Thank you for your suggestion. I will have a look.
What's the model number mentioned on the case
No comprendo para que lo separa es en caso de que se arruino saquenme de dudas
Do they ship EXOS drives in 4TB expansion external drives?
Not that I know of
That's good question. What size of the disk will increase the chance of buying exos drive?
Do you know how to open this drive to reveal the hard drive head and platter?
Why you want to do HDD heart surgery?

Thanks a lot! Very helpful.
Good to hear this helped. Thanks for the kind words
thanks i am going to purchase this one
Would this work with a PS5?
I don't think so. I think the PS5 is using an M.2 SSD not a 3.5" spinning disk, but I don't know that for sure.

Doesn't removing the drive from enclosure void the warranty?

You forgot the little screw!
thnx for this video!!!!
Well I bought a 6TB to only find it was a returned DRIVE. It was swapped for a 120GB Maxor from 2004 👹. I knew came apart too easily.😢
Wow... that is not good.
Maybe removing easy from video name. :)
Pretty easy? You don't think so?

there is nothing in the box? Oh, what a pity, I thought you forgot something in the box, please, look again and confirm! oh my Gosh!
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching.
The video would be much better without the music.
Thanks Pete, we have received comments on both sides of that argument.
and where is the easy part?...hahaha
Destroying ..not disassembling is this..
You talk so much lol
I realize it's not relevant to your application but that enclosure is useless why would anyone buy a drive with a separate power cable in 2024?
