Umaga willing to give away his title to practically a newcomer so Santino can make a name for himself. Full respect on that guy. RIP.
Makes sense, and it shows just how humble he was. Because honestly at that point in time.. what was that belt doing for him? (Besides Oooh, I'm champ?) It's true. He was a monster type character regardless, and hell, eventually, he got a push afterwards. Shame he didn't win.. super Cena reign was tough on everybody. Imagine how different things would be if Cena just pushed people back then.

I don't think today it's about impressing Triple H. It shouldn't have been about impressing Vince back then either.
The goal of a wrestler is to get over with the crowd. That is their job, as a face you get pops, as a heel you get heat. That's what you're supposed to play to and if you're a comedic wrestler it shouldn't matter if you amuse Vince or Triple H, it matter if you amuse the audience.
Thankfully Santino did things that amused both the crowd and Vince so he stayed. Considering the things that amused Vince, like Katie Vicki and Snitsky? Yeah, his approval should never have been a factor in whether a wrestler stayed or left unless in the most egregious of circumstances. Unfortunately that was the first avenue of thought. And it was an asinine way to run a Wrestling business.

Don’t forget Santino was the runner up in the 2011 royal rumble.
Also the runner up in the 2012 Elimination Chamber . The Cobra almost had D-Bryan beat.
Considering that Bryan retained only to be squashed in about 18 seconds by then Royal Rumble winner Sheamus in the first match of Mania 28 for the World Heavyweight Championship?
They might as well have handed the title to Santino for a comedic WHC run for a month
and ended with the squash at Mania for him.
But hey Vince didn't like the guy who got over on his own so squashing D-Bryan was the way to go.

He was given a goofy gimmick kept a positive attitude and made a lot of money. Just like R-Truth.. a lot of guys get released because they get a gimmick, don’t like it have a bad attitude.
So many people think they deserve this big push and they’re the next Cena, Austin or Hogan.
The Brooklyn brawler was an atv jobber for years, then worked for Vince for another 25 years and was fired when he got caught leaking info for the dirtsheets before the PPV or match took place.
A good attitude will get you far in life.

Not working for WWE and having options also helps. Brooklyn brawler isn’t doing anything everyone does today.
A lot of people think nowadays, in to be over with the crowd is to be World Champion or you have to be undefeated. R-Truth is over with the crowd and he hasn’t been a World Champion.
Although it's not that simple, one could argue that a good wrestler should be able to sell any gimmick.
I met Umaga when he did the Tribute for the Troops. He came to our compound and we gave him and some of the other wrestlers a tour. He was easily the most lively and funny of the bunch (Hardcore Holly, Shelton Benjamin, and I think CM Punk). Dude was hilarious and just always willing to talk with everyone.
I was very sad when I heard of his passing.
I was still shocked that Santino won the Intercontinental title when nobody (except those who don't watch Jim Cornette's OVW) knew who he was.

Santino ALMOST winning the HW title had me hyped and cheering hard,one of the best moments of the PG era
Umaga was really a sweetheart, I had told him that he was looking good during his entrance at a Smackdown Live Event in February 2009. His reply "Thanks Man" what a saint he truly was..
I met him at my local LA Fitness in Mississauga one day amd he was such a nice guy and had a great talk! Huge suppoter

Not surprised at all to be honest. I met Eddie when he was in NWA TNA, as Ekmo, and again as Umaga. The dude was quite soft spoken, and intelligent. He told me to finish up college before I decide to try to go into the pro wresting business. He called me Samoan tough, due to all the family member I lost, and various setbacks we all tend to have. I had a chance to tell his son, Zilla how decent of a person he was in real life. Even as Umaga, a few years after I met him as Ekmo, he remembered when we spoke years ago.
I battled my own demons as well, and wish he would have stayed away from the substances that hastened the end of his life. Still, Eddie was a man among men. Hope he found peace on the other side.
