Audi A4 (B8) repairs. Episode 10, Fuel filter replacement (no VCDS).

  • I have now reached episode 10 in my series of repair videos for the 2008-2016 Audi A4 (b8)
    An Item I overlooked when carrying out the service in episode 8 ( • Audi A4 (B8) repairs. ... ) was the diesel filter so I decided it was time to remedy that.
    Not an expensive part at around £20 but a little bit inaccessible as it is fitted below the car.
    This car is a 2.0 TDi so the process may be different on a petrol car.
    The high pressure fuel pump needs to be primed after changing the filter. If you have access to VCDS or Vagcom you can do it via software but I chose to do it by manually purging the pump of air with a small hand pump.
    Hope you find this video usefull and remember to check out the other videos in the series and dont forget to like and subscribe for the latest editions when they are published.
    Take care,
    Dave.

    Brilliant video, mate. Easy to see what you're doing. Little txt notes that are very useful. No chit chat waffle & your lazy "twin brother" for a little humour, plus putting the jack under the wheel, even though it's on axle stands (one of my Machine Mart/Clarke stands collapsed, as a long spring pin thing rusted away, the ratchet came free. I wasn't underneath the car!). Great idea for added safety!!
    Thanks!! 👍. I watched at 2x speed.

    Great video mate. My son has an A4 Avant 1.8 TFSI S line. 1798cc 60 reg. He let the fuel run dry. Filled it up, been running like a dog since lol. I'm thinking fuel filter, as it might have dragged up crap from the tank. It's petrol, so I was hoping the fuel filter was under the bonnet lol. Not had chance to have a google around, as I've only just found out what model it is. Hopiong someone who reads this might know the location, When I get chance I will investigate further. And again, great video.

    Hi , i have changed the o ring on the injector bicose i had a leak, after changing them I knew i had to bleed the fule but i found i video on changing the o ring for the fuel injector and in the manual that the guy worked from it was saying that the fuel pump is self bleeding i dont have to do anything just start the car and let it run , isn’t it the same with the fuel filter?

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont know the full ins and outs of removing the injector but the injectors are after the high pressure pump so the pump wont run dry while it primes the injector. The fuel filter is before the pump so the pump would be running dry until it pulls fuel through the system and its the running dry that damages the pump.

    Can you explain the bleeding process , where can I find the tool to pump the fuel and what exactly are we looking to do when bleeding it

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you are looking to do is remove air from the high pressure pump. If it is full of air it wont pump fuel and if its not pumping fuel its not being lubricated and can fail sending metal through the fuel system. All I was using was a syphoning kit from amazon. I used the hand pump to draw the air out of the pump and as its a vacuum the air is replaced with diesel. If you are unsure then leave it to a professional.

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me it was bled in a couple of minutes.you don't need to bleed the filter as gravity takes care of that, just hand pump long enough to pull fuel through and that way the high pressure pump on the car is bled.

      @lakilaki551 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Car has electric pump , no need to draw fuel in by pump hose, when u replace filter , turn key in to 2nd position(dont start the engine) and u will hear buzzing underneath the car , do this few times before u actually start the engine and pump will prime itself.

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The buzzing is the low pressure pump at the filter or in the tank. The high pressure pump is higher up on the front of the engine so an air lock forms when fuel drains out through gravity when the filter is off. If you dont syphon fuel through from above the air lock wont clear the high pressure pump. If you are lucky and it does it the pump has run without fuel while trying to clear the air lock which can cause serious damage.

  • @lolman4727
    @lolman4727 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would happen if you didn't remove the air afterwards?

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The high pressure fuel pump needs diesel for lubrication. If the pump gets damaged it can send particles of metal into your injectors and into your cylinders and cause quite a bit of damage so best to try and prime the pump before starting the car.

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You MUST prime the pump or risk serious damage. The new filter will work as soon as it is connected. Priming the pump is only drawing out air and the diesel that replaces it will already be past the filter location or drawn through the new filter. If you dont want to touch the engine bay then dont DIY the job.

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  ปีที่แล้ว

      But very expensive. This way you dont need to buy VCDS, simple.

    Can you tell me the name of the tool you used to prime the pump by drawing a vacuum through the return line to remove the air?
    Is it unversial or car specific to fit this car?
    after completing this step and removing this hose tool, do I need to reattach everything fast or it doesn’t matter?

    This is misleading as some have the Fuel filters in the gas tank you say 2008 -2016

    • @AstonishingGlasgow

      Its not misleading, it is 100% how the filter is changed on my car. It states in the description that my car is a 2.0tdi and that a petrol model will be different.
