  • The rivalry between the two major motorcycle manufacturers Harley Davidson and Indian has been raging in for years and we will write a new chapter as we line up a 2021 Harley Road Glide with a 114 M8 against a 2021 Indian Challenger with a 108 cubic inch engine. We are on a quest to find out which manufacturer has the quicker and faster performance Bagger- is it Harley or Indian? Sit back, relax and enjoy this epic two out of three showdown from Rockingham NC and Thunder at the Rock! Share with a friend who loves v-twin motorcycle racing.

The difference was in riders. You can tell the Indian rider didn’t have near the amount of experience then the RG rider. The guy had trouble warming up the tire on the first run. And road the shit out of the clutch on the first run too. The only thing that saved the Indian rider was the horse power. Having nearly 33 more HP definitely helped him catch up to the RG. Switch riders and see what happens. I bet the RG rider would dust the Indian rider if they switched bikes.

I have a 2020 Challenger. I've had a 2018 Harley Heritage 114 and a modded 2007 Street Glide. The Challenger stomps a mudhole in both their asses from a performance/handling/braking/comfort standpoint. As a performance bagger, the Indian is a cut above. That being said, with such competition, Harley will continue to improve their product and we all benefit in the long run. Riding the new Pan America demonstrates the capability of the motor company.

I think if these 2 stock bikes were being piloted by seasoned drag riders you would find a very different result. I have seen the Challenger dominating the bagger class in GP style racing. I will say this I have rode all the models of Harley-Davidson baggers and all the Indian Baggers and I believe that the Indian ThunderStroke has more torque on tap in a totally stock format.
The Challenger is a different breed in its design and makes more power in the mids and highs with its engine. If Harley were to take the Pan-Am engine and make it 108 CI and put it in a redesigned RoadGlide chassis I think it would be a better comparison.
I prefer the ergonomics of the Indian's cockpit. I am not a very big guy and Harley-Davidson's bagger cockpits feel very cramped for me. I feel more comfortable and relaxed on a Chieftain. That said, I still own a 1959 XLCH as a bar-hopper stunt around town ripper. When I decide to pull the trigger on a bagger it will be a Chieftain with a 116. I love that bike for an American Tourer.
To be fair though, I will also put a Triumph Rocket Triple full touring in the shed too. My thing is I want one of each of the 3 oldest names in the game that being Indian in 1901, Triumph in 1902, and Harley-Davidson in 1903. I am not a brand loyalist, I am a 2 wheel enthusiast. If I buy another Harley it is going to be a flathead powered servi-car that I will build as a clone of the one my dad had when I was a kid.
Let the rivalry between Harley and Indian continue to go back and forth because it was that rivalry in the beginning that drove them to continually innovate and produce amazing machines for the consumer. You can't go wrong with either machine they are both legends and provide incredible products. Each have their shortcomings and superior features. To answer is one better than the other is impossible because it depends completely on an individual's perspective and what the person values as important to their riding experience. As long as you have the wind in your beard, the sun at your back, the horizon ahead, and no desire to stop, it doesn't matter what you choose because you understand the calling. Thanks for sharing.

@@paulf9653 Yes competition is needed for both the American V twin makers. Personally riding Harley Davidson I believe in the long term harley still has an overall advantage in terms of the customization and dealer support and even culture. The machines are solid is just a matter of doing a little after market stuff to really make it your perfect ride, but the same can be said for any other motorcycle company.
Both of these manufacturers like all the other ones have to contend with the EPA restrictions which has forced Indian and soon Harley to go full liquid cooled. I think the biggest issue with the new Harley bikes is all of the new electronics that are being put into them as Indian has had similar issues with all the new electronics in their bikes early on.
That new revmax platform really has a lot riding on it and from what I've heard the engine does perform it's just a matter of making the overall product more fine tuned, but since it is a new product I'm sure it will take a little bit of time to truly perfect.
There is a ass ton of technology in the revmax engine and as long as Harley keeps the quality control up and keeps investing into their platform (which they have said that they are going to do) I'm sure the RevMax platform eventually will be a real cultural phenomenon shift because the possibilities will be increased even more for American Motorcycling.

I'm a Harley Rider and I would still pick my Road Glide over the Indian just because I like the looks of the Road Glide better... but anybody who's paying attention knows that a stock Challenger is going to spank a stock Road Glide any day, so this was seriously a very pointless video. What I was hoping to see is a custom built Road Glide against a custom-built Challenger, that would be a fun race... since the Challenger is liquid-cooled it still probably has more potential but would still be fun to watch.
